“Overpriced”
Reviewed August 12, 2013

Maybe its because i"m a yorkshireman , but nearly £80 for a twin room with a single glazed window next to a main road , I think not . The location is central to the village which was a plus . But i"m afraid everything else was pretty average . Our room was small which overlooked a fish and chip shop and a pizza takeaway (very noisy) . Our friends room was smaller which overlooked the beergarden (very noisy one night till midnight) . The breakfast was nothing to shout about ,and the price of the evening food a little bit on the high side . The public bar was ok but with limited seating . The staff was cheerful and friendly , but overall we were disappointed with the hostelry .

I didn’t stayed at the New Inn but we ventured in for a drink whilst staying elsewhere in the village and also for a meal one evening.

The New Inn is an old coaching inn dating back to 1720 and is very traditional and cosy – apparently new owners took over on 1 July this year. The first couple of visits were spent in the bar which is a pleasant area to sit in and according to my husband the beer was very good.

We sat in the restaurant for our meal which was a nice area with solid wood tables and chairs which I thought looked in keeping with the beamed ceiling and age of the building. There was a fair selection on the menu plus specials and the food was tasty, good quality and reasonably priced. I liked the overall ambience of the restaurant.

The lady who served us in the bar earlier in the week was the same lady who served our meals on the Sunday evening and she appeared to have very little help, but was friendly, cheerful and efficient the whole time. For all I know she may have been the new owner and if she was, then good luck to her because her attitude was always professional and welcoming.

Thornton-le-Dale itself is a very pretty village and the whole surrounding area is well worth a visit.

We booked two nights accommodation as a weekend "treat" in the North York Moors. We had one of the king-size rooms. A good-sized room with a comfortable bed, two easy chairs to sit in and a reasonable amount of hanging space for clothes; an adequate on-suite with shower over the bath; and all the usual facilities to make an early morning cuppa, etc. Being an older building you will have to make allowances for the slightly uneven floor and the odd creaking floorboard. The breakfasts were the usual choices, with the 'Full English' being freshly cooked to order. We also had an evening meal on the first night. There was a good range of choice on the menu + the Specials Board. The food was well-cooked and presented - and good value. The service was friendly and welcoming. The Inn has been taken over recently by a young couple who appear to be working particularly hard to establish their own "stamp" on the business and, judging by our brief experience over the weekend, they are going in the right direction to create as another reviewer has commented - 'a warm and relaxed atmosphere exactly how a traditional inn should be'. And, like them, we felt very welcomed!

Room Tip: If you like that extra bit of space you might want to consider one of the 'king-size' rooms.

We booked here for somewhere to stay overnight after a concert in Dalby forest.
We arrived earlier than our check in time so had lunch and a few drinks in the bar. Lunch was from their special lunch menu @ £6. It was ok.
Check in time was from 2, and we went to check in about 2.30. The room was ready but we were advised the towels were still being washed/dried.
As we were due to leave about 5ish to head to the forest for the concert my husband went back to reception about 4.20 for towels as he wanted to shower before we went out. The towels still were not ready, so he had to make do with a very small hand towel that had been left in the room. I am surprised they dont have enough towels to cater for a change over of guests.
The room itself was ok. It was spacious, clean and the bed was comfy but it just felt like the room needed a bit of TLC. The towel rail in the bathroom was loose and some of the furninshings (lamps etc) felt a bit old and dated.
Breakfast the next morning was quite nice, with plenty of cooked choices.
The bar and restuarant are nicely done out.
The staff were all friendly and service from them was excellent.
If you are looking at this Inn for a concert in Dalby Forest - it is about 6 to 7 miles to the concert venue within the forest from here.

My husband and I enjoyed a lovely meal here last week. The service was warm and relaxed exactly how a traditional Inn should be, we felt very welcomed.

The food was tasty, the portions were very generous which meant there was no room for pudding! Would certainly recommend.

I visited here tonight with a group of friends . Having eaten here previously i was confident of the quality and excellence of the food . The restaurant is cosy with a rustic feel and is well presented . The staff are pleasant whilst being attentive they are not overbearing which you can sometimes find . I ordered a special for the starter and a barnsley chop for the main .The starter being brie and chutmey was excellent and i looked forward to the chop however it was short lived . The chop was burnt in places lukewarm and very tough. I had ordered mash with it , it took a while to arrive and was grey in apperance plus cold with skin . I discovered it was merely mashed new potoes when i questioned this i was told this was how they did their mash . At that point i decided the meal wasnt up to the standard i expected for £14 so i requested that it was taken away . I was offered a replacement order but i wasnt confident on a second order so i ate a few pototoes and vegetables which came with the other orders . Although i didnt enjoy my food i did order a coffee which was average and i enjoyed the evening and the company so it wasnt a ruined night . I would return here again but i thik given this experience i would be wary of the standard of food
