“The intimacy of a table for two and the quality of a top, top restaurant.”
Reviewed June 2, 2014

The Brandy Snap is intimate, small but spacious and good; so it is absolutely vital to book a table in advance. Adam isThe Maitre'd and his wife the Chef. They keep each other working at the highest possible standard. I have been going to Brandy Snap for at least 15 years and I can only think of excellent food, wine and a relaxed, mellow evening every single time without fail.

“Beautiful meal and excellent service!”
Reviewed May 31, 2014 via mobile

We stayed in Thornton-le-dale for the week and we had our meal at the end of the holiday to celebrate our parents wedding anniversary. From booking on the phone to ordering our food & drinks to eating it, the service was excellent. One of our party has a gluten free diet and Adam, the maître d,explained to her what exactly she could have on the menu which was a very big selection and she felt very appreciative of that. The food was absolutely delicious and very well presented and the portions were just the right size. We had our own private dining room which for a family of 8 was great and we felt we could relax even more in our own company! Thank you very Brandysnap Bistro for the perfect end to a lovely holiday.

“A brilliant meal - fit for a special occasion”
Reviewed May 28, 2014

Visited the Brandysnap bistro for the first time last week to celebrate our daughter's birthday. We were recommended to visit by neighbours who had been several times before and never had a bad meal there.
Outstanding recommendation. We were shown to our table in the cosy back room by Adam and they had prepared a personal birthday card for our daughter and sprinkled welcome birthday confetti on the table. A fantastic touch. Adam's service was outstanding without being over the top or fussy.
We all had 3 courses, all different and all exceptional in quality, volume, taste, presentation and above all value for money.
Our daughter lives and works in the City of London and as a high earner she is accustomed to eating out in a wide variety of high class restaurants including household name celebrity chef restaurants. She rates the Brandysnap as up there with the best, but for a fraction of the price and with fresh locally sourced Yorkshire ingredients and Yorkshire portions.
We loved it. We told Adam so at the time and we can't wait to go revisit soon.
It was so good we had to review it on TA

“A cosy cottage with an almighty punch”
Reviewed May 9, 2014

Nestled in the heart of Thornton le Dale, one of northern England's most idyllic village, the Brandy Snap Bistro is a gastronomic delight just waiting to be discovered.
Housed in a an ancient converted stone cottage, the restaurant screams quintessential Britain with it's dark, old beams, white washed walls and enticing fire place, you feel like you've set foot into your dream home.
Greeted by Adam, the perfect host, we were led to our table - normally an experience I dread as we tend to be offered views of dustbins anywhere else we go - in this delightfully intimate Bistro you cannot go wrong. Don't misunderstand the use of the word 'intimate' here either; yes, it's snug but you feel like you've got plenty of room, whilst being part of the pleasant ambience.
Adam is charming and tentative, yet not intrusive. He makes you feel like you're the only customers in the restaurant, while treating everyone else in exactly the same charming manner. Aided by his small team of waiting staff he has found a balance that works for him and the customer - not as easy to master as it sounds! The team know their way around the menu and are more than happy to offer recommendations if you can't quite choose between the 8 things that have tickled your fancy.
As beautiful as the setting and effcient as the service is a restaurant would be nothing without some pukka grub to back up - head chef and Adam's wife, Claire, does not let you down; in fact, I'd go as far to say that she blows you away with her wonderful creations. Queen of the kitchen, Claire, prides herself on using locally sourced and seasonal produce and it shows on the plate both in presentation and in flavour. She even makes her own ice-cream, a brave call in a land dominated by Mr Whippy but trust me when I say the 'Lemon Meringue' ice-cream is probably the best I've ever tasted...and I like ice-cream...a lot!!
It's one of those places where you just can't go wrong. If it's not bad enough having to choose from the menu, there is also a specials board just to complicate things further and Adam stocks a good selection of drinks behind his bar for you to enjoy with your meal.
Adam and Claire are a winning combination and if I was ever in the unfortunate position of having to choose my last meal I'd go to Brandy Snap Bistro and eat and drink them out of house and home and Lemon Meringue ice-cream, of course!
I live in London and have been lucky enough to eat in some of the top restaurants that the capital has to offer inclduing The Ivy, Claridges and Jason Atherton's Pollen Street Social (I'm not just showing off here, I'm just giving you a benchmark) and although it's a different experience dining at Brandy Snap Bistro is right up there in my favourite places to eat - I cannot say anymore than that!!

“Perfection on a plate”
Reviewed April 29, 2014

No visit to Thornton-le-Dale is complete without a visit to this discreet and intimate gem. We always save our visit as a last night treat and it has yet to disappoint. We've been there when the place was packed (not that hard to achieve!) and when we were the only customers (well, the weather was foul and the owners were just back from a break themselves) so there's always an element of surprise whether we will be seated in the front dining are (I suspect usually reserved for regular locals - except on those rare quiet nights) or the more tucked away rear room (where you can't overhear any Thornton gossiping!).
The food is Michelin star quality and, whilst more higher end than its Thornton neighbours, still exceedingly good value for money. It's family run - husband front of house, wife as chef and what could well be their son on busy nights out of term time serving on.
A sensibly sized menu is augmented by interesting specials (cross your fingers for a magnificent beef wellington). My wife loves the lamb tagine - preferring it to many she has tried in more ethnic surrounds. Soups are superb and the smoked haddock is a real find. But we have yet to be anything but delighted by whatever we have selected on our visits. The wine list is hand picked, the service is attentive - and informative. A real find.
