“Westin Camino Real Tikal”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 23, 2008

The hotel is reasonable value - the location is little remote meaning you will be paying more for taxis.

The rooms, the grounds and the pool are all very nice.

Note, they advertise they have a boat where they will sail to a local town. This boat is not actually a sail boat only runs on the weekend so if you stay it might be better to plan your trip to be there on a weekend.

My other advice is to take a private taxi when visiting the ruins and leave really early. Make sure you stop at the Canopy bridges at the entrance to the park - the zip lines and bridges are a lot of fun

We stayed for 3 nights / 2 days and visited Flores on the other day

After doing research from home and still not sure of where to spend the night in Tikal, we made travel arrangements through the concierge at our hotel in Guatemala city. We had planned on the Camino Real Tikal. The Esplendido was recommended to us by the hotel concierge but after reading the reviews at tripadvisor.com we decided on Camino Real Tikal.
Our tour included a shuttle from our Guatemala City hotel to La Aurora airport, airfare to Flores (TACA airlines...Airbus, 07:00, 30-35 min. flight), shuttle to the ruins, English speaking guide (Aquilino, who was very knowledgeable and did a great job), lunch, shuttle to Camino Real Tikal, shuttle back to Flores airport the following day, and flight back to Guatemala City and the shuttle back to our Guatemala City hotel. Some tours offer a coupon for breakfast.
There were several different tour companies and guides represented and from what we could see they all did a good job. Some of TACA's aircraft are Aerospatiale/Alenia ATR 42/72...propeller aircraft..abt. 48 passengers. Our flights were Airbuses.
Be aware the 'trek' through Tikal can be very tiring even if you choose not to climb the temples. Our group included people in their 70's, 60's, 40's and 30's. The weather was hot and humid and could have been a lot worse. (Check for their rainy season and temps for Flores before booking). We brought sunscreen, hats, bug repellent...all highly recommended. No one had any problems except for the heat. A sweat band for head and/or neck and good hiking shoes are recommended. Soon after entering the park we climbed up rough 'stairs' with lots of rocks and tree roots. Lots of up and down hiking.
We saw glimpses of toucans and other birds but weren't able to get any photographs. Our (included) lunch at the 'restaurant' in the park was better than expected...beef, chicken or vegetarian. All the tour groups were eating lunch at about the same time.
Upon arrival at Camino Real Tikal there was a little confusion as to whether our shuttle back to Flores airport was 'free'. It was easily straightened out by our guide Aquilino and by the front desk clerk calling our Guatemala City hotel where we paid. We went to our room and the clerk made the call.
The rooms at Camino Real Tikal are very clean, outdated decorating, safety deposit box, TV, telephone, mini bar, no coffeemaker and they don't list a hair dryer but they do have them in the bathrooms. The mini bar and safety deposit box require keys from the front desk. We were very happy with the accommodations. The A.C. was VERY welcome and quiet after spending the afternoon hiking in Tikal. We slept very well at night and the only noises in the AM were from very young hotel guests (young children).
There are two options for dining...inside with A.C. or just outside on the covered deck overlooking the trees and Lake Peten. We had very good luck with the meals we ate and the service was very good. I had a piece of sea bass (in tequila sauce) which I have never had a better one in any 4-5 star restaurant in the U.S. Very well presented with tender-crisp vegetables. The breakfast buffet on Sunday morning was ample and very good...many varieties of fruits, juices, cereals, omelets, rolls/pastries, etc.
We took the free lake tour on Sunday at 10:30. They tour around for about 2 hours and stop just before docking at the hotel to give guests a chance to swim/dive in the lake from the boat. It is a very large lake and you don't see even a third of it. Before leaving the dock they bring a bag of old rolls/bread and you are able to feed the fish and turtles. The dock could use some major repair. Everyone walked very gingerly on the dock.
Take advantage of the trails down below at lake level. We didn't do the high trek. The stairs from lake to hotel offered plenty of exercise.
Our tour included a free shuttle at 4:30PM but the hotel check-out time was 1PM. They allowed us to use the pool and shower/changing rooms while waiting for the shuttle. We had lunch at the pool and again it was very good...a cheeseburger and a chicken sandwich. And not small sandwiches!
The grounds are beautiful, many, many, many steps down to the lake or you can walk up the road they use for their oversized golf carts. The hotel didn't seem to have high occupancy.
We didn't see or hear any monkeys or any other large animals. Just saw small lizards which are more afraid of YOU and ants (outside) which you will find almost everywhere. There are many beautiful birds there. We caught glimpses of a large bird which I later learned is a chachalaca. Before leaving five or six of them gave us quite a noisy chorus.
We would highly recommend this hotel. It is a 45 min. drive to the ruins and yes for 10 or 15 minutes you have to endure a bumpy, unpaved road. That was the only drawback in our opinion.
Reading the previous reviews it appears this hotel has greatly improved in the past couple of years.
Everyone we know, and have spoken to since, who has done Tikal in one day say they wish they had spent the night.
If we were to visit Tikal again we would definitely stay at Camino Real Tikal, San Jose, Guatemala.

The Camino Real Tikal is about an hour away from the actual ruin itself, although the location couldn't be much better. It's a very romantic place overlooking lake Peten. Our room was very comfortable, with a quiet A/C unit and TV. Wireless internet is available for $10/day, although you have to be in the main area to use it. It can't be accessed from the rooms, which extend about a five minute walk from the restaurant and reception.

The hotel restaurant regularly served buffets for meals (Although they said we could order off the menu if we liked, the buffet always seemed the best option). The quality of the food was good, reasonably priced.

They have regular free activities at the hotel such as tours of the lake in their boat, games for kids, and a hike into the forest preserve that surrounds the place. NB: the forest hike is strenuous, with a lot of steep stairways cut into the sides of hills, and lasts about two hours. We were followed by a hotel employee with a rifle when we did it, because of fear of "banditos", although they claimed not to have had any problems. The forest is full of beautiful tropical birds and howler monkeys, however.

Hotel staff was very nice and quite helpful always.

The hotel is large but quite outdated - food is fine and it's a good place to stay as a base for Tikal etc.

The best bit which we nearly missed was wandering down to the lake, where you can laze in a hammock and watch the sun go down, fantastic!

Bizarre waiter service - very OTT with random silver service etc but just ok food, though in general, the food in Guatamala wasn't great so not neccesarily a huge draw back.

This hotel is about 45 minutes from the airport (15 of it on a very bumpy unpaved road) Free shuttle service to and from the airport was a nice bonus. Rooms were clean, however nothing special and a bit outdated. Nice views from the balcony (try to reserve a room on the higher floors). Restaurant on site was very good and inexpensive with great view of the lake. Equipment in their workout room was a joke.....very rundown, rusty, and OLD. Nice pool and outdoor bar area. The chairs by the lake were old and uncomfortable.....they did have however a few newer chaise lounges. The lake was beautiful! The hotel does a sunset cruise every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (the yacht looked a bit rundown...we didn't stay on a weekend so not sure how the cruise itself is)......and turtle feedings at the dock every morning. Front desk staff weren't the friendliest, certainly not helpful. Tikal is about an hour's drive away.

Great Hotel. The lake is clean and refreshing. What a place to come back and relax after the all day visit to Tikal. They picked us up from the airport and brought us to it for no extra charge. The food was very good and cheap and the view from the Restaurant is incredible. Rooms are not luxurious but clean and beds very comfortable. Ask for room in 2 or 3 floor so you view to the lake is even better, All rooms have a balcony that overlooks the lake. At night we could hear the monkeys. Great hotel, great experience. THe canopy people picked us up for free also. We only had tro pay transportation back and forth form the hotel to the ruins. atell hotel to call Fermin he waited for us at the ruins and only charged us $60.00 for the whole day. He also hooked us up with a fantastic guide for the ruins. worth every penney.

We were only at Camino Real for 1 evening and night, but it was wonderful. After exploring TIkal for a day, it was nice to come back to a pool and get refreshed. The walk down to the lake is a must. We almost missed it! We went to see the sunset and were pleasantly surprised with all the paths to explore. Service was exceptional. Food was excellent. Rooms were not overly luxurious, butt they didn't need to be. It was a beautiful location. Loved it.
