“Picky Tour Leader Review”
Reviewed April 4, 2011

I had a group of exacting and educated seniors at the hotel at the end of March 2011. From the top-down, the General Manager to the Front Desk to breakfast waiters to housekeepers, the service at the hotel was attentive and accommodating (and enthusiastic). A special point about the food: the hotel catered our events in Yaxha and in Tikal--and performed beautifully. Not one tummy problem in 87 American bellies. I'm returning to this property on my own dime with my own family in February 2012. That lake's edge at sunset won't leave my bones.....

I found this place to have lots of amenities. They have a nice restaurant, beautiful swimming pool, hot tub and beach. The rooms had patios with a view of the lake, birds and monkeys. You can drink the water and use the ice. An excursion to Tikal is a must. The sunset over the lake was wonderful.

The Camino Real is a very spacious property with a larger number of rooms than other hotels in the area and thus an obvious location for tour groups to Tikal. On the one hand this means a crowded dining room at breakfast and dinner but on the other a very quiet and enjoyable resting place during the day, when it is possible to take advantage of the lovely and uncrowded grounds (including a pleasant pool area). The rooms are spacious, well appointed, clean and air-conditioned. However, they are paired with adjoining doors which makes soundproofing with the adjacent room very poor -- we were fortunate to have quiet neighbors during our stay but if yours are at all noisy you will certainly hear them. The outdoor dining area of the restaurant is very pleasant, the inside area somewhat less so, and you might not get an outside table if there are large groups at the hotel. The food was ample and quite tasty. However, the menu was not very creative, it was the same for lunch and dinner (no specials) and it did not change during the 4 days we were there. The staff were generally good but not great, with the notable exception of Erick at the front desk, who is very knowledgeable and extremely helpful. If you are interested in birdwatching, this is an excellent location. A word of caution: the hotel offers a guided hike each morning at 7am (the guide on the day I took it spoke no English). The trail is quite strenuous and relatively steep and many of the stairs along the trail are damaged. The hike takes almost 2 hours and there’s no obvious short way back to the hotel. If you're not in good shape or do not care for steep trails I would recommend that you give it a pass. In summary, there are pluses and minuses about this hotel; its amenities, spaciousness and proximity to Tikal make it one of the most desirable places to stay in the area and very good value for the price, but if you wish to avoid staying at a hotel that caters to tour groups you might wish to consider the alternatives.

right on the lake, wonderfully quiet, amid great flora & fauna, a 30 min. ride to Tikal National Park (excursions are sold from the hotel), with a nice restaurant, and very good value for money.

we stayed here with another family in 4 rooms for three nights. all rooms were spacious, very clean, and comfortable. Including safety box, nice bathroom and shower, extra towel/linnen service in the evening, and english tv channels! The service by the friendly staff was more than outstanding. ex: I take an espresso each morning, the 3rd morning my espresso was handed over with a big smile while I was doing my mails.
Food is very reasonable, of course you can't expect culinary wonders.
For families with kids who also want to relax the best place around. Table tennis, soccer, boat tour on the lake, canoos, internet access, pool, and at the warm nice lake , all free of charge. if you like to run or jog go to the village "next door", roughly 2miles.

My entire family was so impressed with this hotel. We were traveling with a three year old so we were thrilled to have such a beautiful and friendly hotel for our "home away from home." We were treated to two complimentary boat rides on the georgeous Lake Peten Itza and also got to use the kayaks on the lake when we needed. The staff was excellent and the food great! I can't say enough good things about the entire experience. I even was given a special complimentary Mother's Day coffee and dessert which was the "ultimate hotel friendliness" to me. The hotel is close to the town of El Remate ; a cozy rural community. We also were only 30-40 minutes from the Tikal National Park. The drive was very scenic and easy.
My biggest tip to anyone wanting to book is to give you the proper website; once you are on the direct website for Camino Real it is easy to book rooms and communicate by email. The website is " www.Caminorealtikal.com.gt, then select the English or Spanish flag. Again, I highly recommend Camino Real for anyone wanting a restful, quiet, beautiful place to stay-the "Heavenly Beds" are wonderful!

We were met at the airport as arranged (the only hotel in Guatemala who managed to do so) for a free transfer, don't book a private one its not worth the money. The hotel has a beautiful setting on the shores of the lake within the Cerro Cahui National Park. It is approximately an hours walk to the village of El Remate or a 10 minute taxi ride.
The hotel has a corporate feel to it but having said that we had no complaints regarding the facilities or staff and the rooms were spacious and clean with a nice balcony and a mini fridge. The walk to the lake shore is down lots of steps, we counted over 100, not so bad going down but a killer coming back up, especially in the heat.
The hotel is well positioned for visits to Tikal, Yaxha, Flores and Belize but finding a local taxi driver with good english will work out far cheaper than booking trips through the hotel.
