“Great way to exhibit stuffed animals”

Margarete Steiff Museum

You may think a "Steiff"-stuffed animal museum is boring and dull, showing old stuffed dusty things, but the opposite is true here. The visit starts with a nice animated show where you pass through several rooms with a story of 1000 lost teddy bears being told and shown. Then you arrive on the top floor where you can cuddle, climb and play with many greatly created and nicely presented stuffed animals. You go down the snake-slide to the first floor, where a bit of history is shown, but also you can watch making of stuffed animals live. A large shop and restaurant completes the visit. Not for teenagers, but also parents can enjoy the visit with their kids.

We decided to drive the Romantic Road through several walled medieval towns. Before reaching the third town,we detoured to the Steiff factory. It is the birth place of the teddy bear. The museum discusses how the company was founded and they have a craftsman showing how the stuffed animals are made. Then you move on to hear the story of the missing 3,000 teddy bears "performed" by all the different stuffed animals that Steiff makes. Once the missing Teddy bears are found, you proceed to the petting zoo where you can "ride" the life-sized animals. What a great place for kids of all ages.

We took the train to Giengen from Frankfurt. From Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof we took an ICE train to Mannenheim then had to change platforms to another ICE train to Ulm. Then at Ulm had to change to RE22522 train. The countryside is very postcardish. When we arrived at Giengen en Brenz we followed the bear prints on the footpath from the station to the Museum, about a 10 minute walk. The show at the Museum was in English - telling the story of Margarette Steiff and showing the story of Knopt and Freda travelling the world looking for an actual consignment of 300 bears that went to USA but never arrived. The whole museum is well set out. As a bear maker and collector I thoroughly enjoyed the day.

This museum is geared towards small children but has much to offer adults as well. Plan to go during their annual summer festival and you will find bargains at the "jumble sale"!

Overall a great museum, had a small tour and afterwards there was some more informative parts on the history of Margarett Steiff and her teddy bears. The only thing is at the end was the bears were pretty expensive, but the people were pretty nice there.
