Two night stay booked as a base for a local walking break. Slightly off putting when arriving by car to see 'To let' signs on the hotel, but understand that the current owners are moving on at the end of March and new proprietors are already in place to take over. They will do well to maintain the current standards. It's an old inn/hotel but very tastefully modernised and refurbished throughout without losing character. Very friendly welcome on arrival by Helen the co-owner. Cosy and spacious bar and restaurant area. Well furnished, clean and comfortable bedroom. Ensuite bathroom/ shower stocked with White Company toiletries. Restaurant well priced and good quality. 2 or 3 course set menu options or slightly more extensive a la carte choices. Selection of local real ales at the bar and reasonably priced wine options. Freshly cooked breakfast options using locally stocked ingredients. A very pleasant short break and I wish Helen and Ron every success in their new ventures

Room Tip: Rooms at the side and rear of the hotel are quieter

We popped in here by chance and was more than pleasantly surprised. The lady behind the bar was really welcoming and friendly, it was early when we popped in to eat, around 5pm on a Monday so not too many diners but still a nice atmosphere created by the staff. Enjoyed 3 courses for less than £20, great food at reasonable prices, many thanks.

Both my fiancé and I booked The Star Hotel last minute as a place to stay after climbing Helvellyn with a group of friends. Everything about our stay was absolutely excellent. The room was warm and cosy, beautifully furnished with an amazing power shower, lovely toiletries and towels and a tv and DVD player too. We ate dinner at the hotel which was tasty and great value for money. The service was impeccable, the staff were friendly, helpful and really couldn't do enough for us. We had a refreshing nights sleep in a comfy bed and were met in the morning with a full English breakfast, cereal and extra toast. We cannot wait to return to this hotel and would thoroughly recommend it to anybody. We have previously stayed in the more expensive 'Boutique' Hotels in the area and we can honestly say we would rather stay at The sun. The hotel is excellent value for money! Warm and inviting with lovely staff. What more could you ask for?

A really good hotel. I had to postpone the date of our stay by one week, but I was accommodated. Hotel is warm and clean. Food is excellent, good quality and plenty of it. Lovely white fluffy towels and 'White Company' toiletries. Mine host even lit a fire for us. ONLY a tiny criticism - mine hostess needs to provide a more effusive greeting on arrival. We would certainly re-visit. Mr & Mrs Griffin

We got a deal from groupon for the sun hotel we stayed for 2 nights we also got a 3 course meal with the deal. The food was amazing it made us want to eat there the 2nd night. The rooms are nice and cosy with a fresh look no problems what so ever I can say about the sun hotel it's 20 mins walk from the town centre so close to everything. We would definitely go again groupon deal or not

Hi there - just returned after a two night stay exploring the lake district.
Hard to fault this hotel, the place is spotless. We dined on the second night, the food also was pretty good.

The hotel is ideal for a romantic getaway, there is no tv at the bar or wifi or even a mobile signal; Perfect!
