Maikal Resort

Maikal Resort is a gem in the MPTDC crown. The Officials vouch by it and the claim stands very true. We travelled to JabalPur in March End 2013. The weather was at its best. Pre Monsoon Showers had begun to bless the city and its surroundings. The Palash tree was at its full blossom standing out as the lone reveler in the dry rugged terrain. Oh anyone would turn into a poet lest he visit JabalPur during the time I did.

We Travelled to Bargi from BedaGhat and that was such a bad choice. The Bargi Dam road from BedaGhat is in shambles and better avoided. The Road to Bargi From Jabalpur is a marvel.

The Maikal resort itself is a five star property which is famous with international and local tourists. The Staff maintains the property and is very loyal and courteous crew.

The Boating equipment is excellent and the charges are very reasonable. The kids will really love the Scooter and the speedBoat in the Bargi Dam.

The rooms opening onto the lake will give you ample sightings of the numerous water birds. The Sun rise and set accross the dams are such a bliss to enjoy from the balcony. Early Morning, the sighting of the fishermen boats in the lake is amazing. This place is for the dreamer in you.

I take back fond memories of this place.

Room Tip: The Septic tank outside each room can emanate bad smell sometimes. Be sure to alert the authorities...

We traveled to Jabalpur, Bargi, Amarkantak and Kanha National Park from 22nd December to 29th December 2012. We stayed at the Maikal Resorts Bargi Dam.

Bargi Dam is around 30 - 40 Kms away from Jabalpur. The best option to travel here is to arrange for a cab drop. The road from Jabalpur to Bargi Dam though narrow is a good road. A lot of tourists who travel to Jabalpur visit Bargi Dam only for a couple of hours. However we decided to stay at Bargi Dam for 1 day while planning our itinerary. And I must say that this was a very good decision.

Here we enjoyed river cruize, speed boating and a ride on the water scooter. Especially our 8 year old son was very happy with these activities.

After having our lunch we checked in to the room and I was awe struck after seeing the view from the room and the private deck. This resort has only 6 rooms and each room offers magnificent views of the dam reservoir. Each room has a private deck. You can enjoy sunset and sunrise from the room and the deck. At sunset and sunrise the color of water turns red/ golden and you see the reflection of the sun in the water body and that is an amazing experience.

Rooms are large and have a separate dressing area. The rooms and toilets were clean, bedsheets and blankets were clean. The quality of sleep was excellent. Since this resort has only 6 rooms evenings and nights are quite, and serene.

There is a restaurant attached to the resort. The food is excellent, especially you get chapatis here. Although there is no bar facility here (which I think should have been there, but still it is OK).

This was unique experience. I think that having only 6 rooms here has maintained the serenity of this resort. Great place to visit, and great resort, magnificent sunrise and sunset, and magnificent view of the dam reservoir, and to experience true meaning of tranquility.

This time when we were planning for a trip, we had decided to visit a Reserve Forest. We ultimately finalised Kanha National Park. The journey would take us to Jabalpur and so we decided to visit "dhuandhar and Marble rocks" too. We decided to spend a day at Jabalpur and when we went for booking at the MP Tourism office in Delhi we were suggested by the official there to stay at their resort- MAIKAL RESORT at Bargi, and I must thank the individual for suggesting the same.
We drove from Jabalpur station to Mailkal resort whihc is about 20 km away. The road takes you through tribal villages, the condition of the road is mostly fine though narrow, but there are no street lights. So travel till the sun is up. The journey is picturesque.Once we reached, the check in was smooth, there is ample parking. As we were ushered into the room, I was struck by the stunning view form the room. There is the beautiful lake ( reservoir) of the dam and the balconies of the room offers tremendous view of the lake and the dam. Its calm and serene and the light blue waters of the lake offers a breathtaking view. The rooms are large with a dressing area and the food and services are very good. We also took a walk on the dam, the next morning. They have provisions for boating and there is a 5 hour cruise also with food and music on board.
I would recommend this resort to anyone planning to spend a day or two in or around Jabalpur.

Room Tip: All six rooms are air conditioned and have the same view form the balcony.

Bargi Dam is a large masonary dam (supplemented by Earthen Dam on both sides)constructed across the mighty river Narmada around 30 kms from Jabalpur City in Madhya Pradesh. The Best way to go to Bargi Dam from Jabalpur is to take a non conventional route. Go to Penty Naka - Cantt Jabalpur and from there via Bilhari, Gour Nadi Chowk take a right turn and you drive through the TFRI (Tropical Forest Research Institute). Drive down about 20 kms further via the Rani Durgawati Samadhi to reach Maikal Resort, a small resort on one side of the Bargi Dam. This resort is managed by MP Tourism Development Corporation. (One can stay at Jabalpur unless you are specifically interested to stay overnight at this resort you may book this in advance through the internet or at their office at Jabalpur Railway station or Hotel Kalchuri, Jabalpur). The entry to Maikal Resort is restricted and one has to pay Rs. 10/- for entry leading you first to the reception counter (I have not seen their rooms). This resort is situated just on one side of the Mighty Waterbody created due to the water having been stopped by the Huge Dam. The main attraction of this place is a Small Cruise which carries around 20-40 persons for a one hour (or less) small trip into the waterbody. Small Motor Boats are also available. (People often book the full cruise and arrange ring ceremonies, small birthday parties and other private parties - as this place has a second cruise boat which is sometimes used for this purpose). After the boat ride you may go in for a sumptuous lunch - the restaurant here offers a variety of food at very reasonable costs....mind it the tea or coffee is very bad and so is the AC System at the restaurant. After a view of the Huge Lake like River -Waterbody...one may leave this place and go down to cross the river and take a view of the Dam - mind it again the road down there is one of the worst drives (4-5 kms) and you need an expert car driver to take care that both the car and your bones don't break. If you have a high connection with the Electricity Board authorities at Jabalpur you can peep into the Power Generation Unit. Next drive towards the Bargi Colony (Irrigation Deptt Staff Colony) and from there towards the Bargi Village which is about 8 kms after crossing the River...enroute there is a Sarvodaya School (managed by the HRD Ministry - Govt of India) just opposite this school or somewhere near that there is a road on the left leading you to a drive of 2 kms uphill and you will reach a beautiful Hillock on which there is the famous Nandi Temple...spend some time here for a visit to the God and also to take a bird's eyeview of the area and drive back down to Temar Falls (you will have to ask some local villager for the exact location or else you will miss it) Remember - while on a drive from Nandi Mandir to Bargi Village if you come across a small bridge or a rivulete than it means you have gone overboard by about 1 kms...Go back and ask for the Temar Falls...you will really enjoy the sight and a walk into knee deep waters with the river current ...of course if the locales here may have not soiled the banks (if you are unlucky please report to Mr Jairam Ramesh the Honble Minister for Environment who holds the additional portfolio of Drinking Water and Sanitation - I am sure he still holds the portfolio). Warning !! a little ahead the water is deep so be careful. After a small stop at Temar Falls and while on your return to Jabalpur via Bargi Village you may either go to New Bheraghat via Chargawan (before the Tilwaraghat Bridge over River Narmada) or if you dont intend to go to New Bheraghat the same day (you may plan a separate visit to Old Bheraghat with Dhuadhar Falls, Cable Car ride, local artisan sellings and Marble Rocks for the next day) and instead after crossing the River Bridge at Tilwaraghat drive further upto the Govt Medical College and get down at "Pisanhari ki Madhia" the famous Jain Temple which is believed to have been constructed by an elderly lady with her earnings derived out of "Atta Pisna" or "Grinding of wheat" and hence the name "Pisanhari ki Madhia" This Temple is situated on a Hillock and can be approached by climbing about 350 staircase. Next please don't miss another beautiful Jain Temple on the foothill, here itself. After visiting this place you may drive down to Madan Mahal (which may be worth seeing only if there is a Light and Sound Show - please check this beforehand with MP Tourism) otherwise you will see only the remnants of a Watch Tower of Rani Durgawati (called Madan Mahal - there is no Mahal). The famous balancing rock is also nearby. Best Wishes !!!

We were going to Jabalpur for a friends marriage, we never had great expectations from Jabalpur but this came as a surprise, and very pleasant one indeed. All rooms come with private deck overlooking amazing lake. Not even a soul till the horizon, wow. Rooms were more than adequate, they looked a bit tired, but overall experience more than compensates. Food is OK, weather was great in Feb. Look out for boat trips, sunsets & sunrises.

Room Tip: Nothing to choose actually as all overlook the lake
