4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2014

Bought on groupon. The trip was enjoyable. But the down part was on groupon we were said to get a crab house but got a beach house which was not up to mark.Otherwise every thing was fine.
Breakfast and service was excellent.
Children park and bridge was good.
To get to the resort the roads were not good.
but proximity to beach was excellent.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DISCLAIMER: All my reviews would be written based on a perspective of a vegetarian, non-smoker, non-alcoholic, price-conscious, Indian customer. All my ratings and feedback would be heavily dependent on the variables stated above. Viewers are expected to consider my comments accordingly before making their travel decisions.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had the opportunity to visit Mandarmoni and stay at Hotel Rose Valley for about three nights in December 2013 as a part of business trip. On this review, I would like to collectively review the attraction as well as the hotel.

Transportation:
I landed at Kolkata airport and took a cab to Mandarmoni. We left Kolkata airport at around 5:00 PM and reached Mandarmoni (Rose Valley resort) only by 9:30 PM without any long break in the middle. The road, for most part, is ok. The last few kilometers, however, are bad. There are two ways to reach the Rose Valley Resort - one goes through the beach while the other is a back gate. During nights and during high tides, the sea rises and hence the front route might not be motorable. The back-route is a muddy road and not suitable for travel unless one has an SUV. It is not advisable to venture out late at night on this route for safety reasons. I would prefer that visitors plan their travel better and take the beach route. It is a very pleasant sight driving on the shore alongside the great sea.

The place (Mandarmoni):

Mandarmoni, in my opinion, is the best 'unknown' beach in India. The beach has a long continental shelf - the biggest I have seen. To set the perspective, I have seen the beaches of Goa (from Calangute to Varca), Pondicherry, Chennai, Mumbai, Kanyakumari et all, but the sheer width of the beach at Mandarmoni surprised me. This also happens to be the longest motorable beach in the world. Very few people seem to know about this place and very few even wish to visit here.

However, the people who do visit here are mostly locals or from Eastern part of India. The water seems safe for playing and there is very little crowd on the beach. So is this a good beach to go?

I would recommend this place to families/groups who are looking for a quite outing by the sea-side. There is nothing much to do there apart from playing at the sea. There are a few water sports - boat sailing, speed boat, water scooter & para-gliding (both on the shore as well as in the sea). The shacks are a far cry from the ones present at Goa. One could take a ride along the beach side (transport carriages are available on rent and charge around Rs. 150.00) for the ride till the 'estuary'.

Now, the estuary is not really an estuary; instead its a backwater. Nonetheless, it is worth going. It is a very serene place and one could find many many red crabs on the beach. So if you have your own source of entertainment or if you dont wish much action, Mandarmoni could be ideal place for you. One might find it difficult to do late night walks here simply because this place is very secluded and can get pitch-dark at night.

Resort: I stayed at the Rose Valley Resort at Mandarmoni. This is (on relative terms) the best property at Mandarmoni. The place is huge; supposedly spread over 40 acres. It has a residential segment, water park, game areas and a few children's rides all in one big campus. There is a rope-way tour of the property which is recommended. There is also a pretty Radha-Krishna temple on the campus that is recommended to be visited (reach in time to attend the 6 PM prayers).

Rooms: The rooms in the resort are inspired by the sea. There were rooms in shape of Conches, Crab holes, Sail & Oysters. Each of the room types are arranged in clusters with a duplex structure. I was on the ground floor of the 'conch' section. I was told that these are the amongst the better rooms on the property. The 'room' per say was a suite with a circular living area and a circular bed-room. Overall, the room was VERY spacious and the fittings were all of an acceptable quality. The room had two 32" LCD TVs and a comfortable bed.

Service:
------------------------------------------------
This is one area where there is huge scope for improvement. The rooms were not cleaned everyday, the toiletries were not replenished on each day and the room service took some time to respond. Again, I do not expect a 5-star service experience here but still, some more focus on service would go a long way. I clearly feel that there is lack of focus on service & maintenance and the results are beginning to get seen. There is general degradation of floor, painting, fittings & accessories. I sincerely hope that the management focusses on maintaining this property, otherwise it wouldn't be half as much fun as it today in less than a years time!

Bathrooms:
------------------------------------------------
The bathroom was big and spacious and fittings worked well. The lighting is not adequate though.

Food:
------------------------------------------------
Food was generally good and affordable. A cup of tea (for example) cost Rs. 20.00.

Other good things about the hotel/place:
------------------------------------------------
- Sunrise + Sunset points in the same beach (Only during winters when the Sun takes a different trajectory)!
- Lots of things to do within the resort - swimming, badminton, cricket (there is a batting practice machine as well), etc.
- Booking water sports from within the hotel entitles one for a 30% discount.

Other not-so-good things about the hotel/place:
------------------------------------------------
- Due to lack of power in the up-country locations of India, there are two power outage periods when nothing works: 5 AM to 6 AM and 5 PM to 6 PM (give/take 30 min).
- There is no internet facility at the hotel. 3G internet data-cards work but the speed is low. Airtel & Reliance seemed to work but Tata Indicom & MTS failed.
- Beautiful beach + inexpensive lodges/hotels attract a certain class of people that are largely not very 'environmentally concerned'. One can see people dropping beer bottle, chips packets, cigarettes and other such things onto the beach. This seriously impacts the area and is a sore-sight for others. The locals too don't seem concerned about improving the situation either.
- It is only a matter of time before this beach too gets dirty and crowded like other beaches in India.
- Rose Valley Resort is in serious need to improve its maintenance and service, otherwise these would fail to attract the right type of visitors.

Verdict:
------------------------------------------------
I seriously wish that the Government/locals step-in to protect/conserve the beautiful Mandarmoni beach. Rose Valley is the best resort around and has most facilities (albeit, at a slightly lower level of service) that guests travelling in 4 stars hotels would demand. If you are in/around Kolkata and have a couple of days to chill out, and if you love the sea, you could certainly give Mandarmoni a shot! Please please try to be environmentally responsible!

Room Tip: Conch rooms are good, especially the ground floors.

Visited Rose Valley Resort during puja vacation with family and friends. This resort is truly a must visit destination with all the ingrediants a nice place should have. It has well planned and maintained landscape with spacious rooms with fun rides, air lifts, water park etc. The evening programme organised during Puja holiday was of average standard. Food quality was more or less OK. But on service front they have to work hard and need much improvement. However we like the place and childrens thoroughly enjoyed each and every moment of their stay at the Resort. Water sports was also full of excitement and adventurous. Overall the Resort is worth staying although it is expensive.

I will call this resort as the Disneyland of the east India because it has everything you want far - nice scupcures, rides, sports, nice rooms, beach, party, food, games etc. It as something for everyone. If you are going with your kids, they will just love it and would be depressed while going as its actually a fun destination. It has great ambiance which gives you a feeling of great you came here and would like to come back again. Its bit expensive so think before you go or else take a day or two day trip but all in all worth going. Great fun place

Room Tip: Chose the most standard and economical room as most of the fun is outside and you rarely go to your...

Visited the Rose valley Beach resort as a part of a leisure trip organized by my company. Getting to Mandarmoni is tiring as the journey from Kolkata is a long one and the road condition for the last 10 kms is really bad. But once inside the resort, one will find yourself in peace and tranquility. The resort has a water park, a variety of rides for children and best of all opens onto the beach. The inside of the resort is well maintained and colorful which sets in a happy mood. Now coming to the drawbacks - most of the rooms (cottages) are located far away from the beach without a view of the sea. The cottages are spread out across a large area and without any proper direction or layout displayed and hence I had to search for half an hour to locate my room. Finally a helpful staff guided me to my room. Staff are generally friendly and courteous. The rooms are large and spacious and amenities provided are sufficient for a stay. The TV in my room was a 19 inch one and appeared too small for a room of this size. There is one restaurant and again I had to walk about 15 mins from my room to reach the restaurant. Quality of food is average. Outside the hotel you can drop out for outdoor activities like para sailing or other beach activities. There are motor vans that can take you for a ride along the sea and to the nearby confluence of a river. At night there will not be much to do as the beach does not have lights and one may not be able to venture out. For the price it charges, I found the resort to return a decent value for money, though I would recommend travelers not to set very high expectations.

Room Tip: If you are looking for a view of the sea try to avoid the cottage, bungalow style rooms as they are...
