“Good trip to Mandarmoni”
Reviewed May 28, 2012

We decided for a short one day trip to mandarmoni from kolkata on the weekend. The roads were extremely bad. Finally we reached Rose Valley resort. The campus of rose valley is beautiful. The rooms were good but not excellent though they were charging a quite a lot.The campus within was quite thrilling with toy train ride and an aqua park with lots of water rides .However the person in charge of the rides was quite rude. Also there was a cable car offering a lovely view .The sea was just outside the gates and there is a beautiful temple within campus. In short it was a good trip but the staff was pretty much unfriendly.

This is a new hotel of Rose Valley in New Digha, renovation work going on. Rooms are very clean but bed sheets and towels are untidy. Complimentary breakfast is limited to fixed number of bread with jam/butter along with omlette or Puri sabji in. Usually this is not so in other Rose Valley Hotels especially in Durgapur. Be prepared to face power cuts and AC will not work since there is no backup power facility to run the ACs. Only lights will work. You have to call up 151 to request them to change the power switch located in each floor for switch on the AC only normal power supply resumes. Food quality is very good and the restaurant is very clean. Swimming pool is good but not maintained adequately. Carry cash to pay bills since Credit/Debit is not accepted. Staff are good and cooperative but front desk staff needs to be more professional. Given the quality of service and amenities the room rent are quite high. Rose valley Old Digha is around 3 KM from Digha Flag Station and the local vehicle (ambassador) hire charge is around Rs 200.

Room Tip: Rooms and restrooms have excellent fittings and furnishings and amenities.

We recently visited Mandarmani and a quick check at Tripadvisor confirmed that Rose Valley is the place to stay at.

The decision was perfect as we had a great time staying at the Sail House (slightly expensive at Rs 7,000 per night + taxes but excellent value for money). The rooms were spacious and well appointed. We could not have imagined a nice Jacuzzi in a resort room and kids had super fun lying in the Jacuzzi.

The resort is a large one with swimming pool, water park, cable car, road train (like a toy train but runs on the road), indoor games and boating, all available in the premises. If you don't feel like going out to the beach to avoid the salty water, you can make merry in the resort itself.

And if you are the outdoor type, Mandarmani it is. Driving on the beach itself gives you kicks. And being able to ride an ATV, a JetSki, a sea boat (the huge waves splashing at the boat got us thoroughly wet but who's complaining). We did not opt for the banana boat. Our biggest regret was not being able to parasail as the wind was were rough.

You might like to take a modified motorised cart to go to the Mohana (the place where the river meets the sea). There are two, one each at the two ends of the 18 km long beach.

Being only 175 kms from Kolkata, it is a fun weekend getaway. You must definitely go there once!

Room Tip: You can take a sea view room in the main building. We chose the sail room for the excellent room siz...

We went to Rose Valley at Mandarmoni after reading the reviews here and we loved the place.

Took us 4~4.5 hours from Kolkata (self-drive).

The resort itself is beautiful and is spread over a nice area, has a really great layout and features like Cable Car, Water Park etc. however the timings for these are limited and spread out over the day.

We had booked 2 Elite rooms on advice of the booking agent in Kolkata, and though they had a great sea view, the rooms themselves were on the smaller side and felt more like 'city hotel' rooms than resort rooms. Thus, we went exploring the "Sail House" rooms and felt they were vastly superior, thus we upgraded to these.

Though the Sail house doesn't have a great view - the lower unit is very spacious. It has 1 bedroom with lots of space and a huge wardrobe + the usual features like a small fridge, coffee/tea maker etc. The other room is a circular room with a big couch (6 seater) in a semi-circular arrangement. The bathroom has a bathtub/Jacuzzi unit as well and is comfortably sized too. The upper unit is also bigger than the Elite rooms, however the upper units suffer from some smell from the bathroom due to some faulty construction. We spent all the time in the lower units, and just went to sleep upstairs so it wasn't a big deal.

Be advised that the 'rooms' are in the main building at the front of the resort, and are kind-of boring so to speak. The Sail house and the Shell house (?) are like small bungalows spread out over the rest of the resort, and personally seemed much better. 2 other sets of new bungalow types were also being constructed and looked nice from the outside, they should open up soon. I would definitely suggest these over the rooms.

Coming to food, there is a restaurant "Exotic Crystal" in the main building serving Indian and Chinese food. We ate only veg food during our 2 days there and the food was quite good. The Hot & Sour soup was exceptional. There is also a restaurant "Ruposhi Bangla" serving a Bengali Buffet/Thali, though we did not dine there.
While the food is great, and surprisingly cheap (we averaged 700~800 per meal of 4, while veg, it is quite cheap compared to the rates nowadays), the timings are very restrictive and kept very strictly for whatever reason, if you do not adhere to the timings, they will not bother serving you food. (eg. Lunch is from 1-3pm: we went there at 12.50pm and were asked to come back after 1pm! - very unprofessional).
Breakfast is inc. with the rooms and had a typical fare with not much choice, though it was adequate. It comprised of 1 South Indian dish (Idli), 1 North Indian (Puri-Sabji), Toasted Bread, Scrambled Eggs, Juice and Coffee/Tea.

The resort itself is very beautiful, well maintained and quite serene. The open-air Swimming Pool is also great and is open 9am-7pm. Well maintained lawns and round paths are a plenty, the houses are well spread out and it feels vast. There is a lake of sorts as well with a jogging/walking path around it as well.

The resort is right on the beach and the beach itself is really pristine. The sand is very smooth and is hard enough to walk/drive on - most resorts are accessed by driving on the sand itself. It is very conducive to walking as well. The water is the typical bay of bengal water, slightly black due to mud. During our visit, there was a continuous very strong wind blowing inwards on the beach and the wind permeated throughout the resort as well. It was quite refreshing, but there was very fine sand alongwith the wind, it is advised to keep camera etc. equipment safe.

The resort as well as some local companies have started some water activities on the sea as well, the setup is similar to Goa. There is a Jet-Ski ride, the Banana Boats as well as the Speed Boat ride on the waves - while it's a lot of fun, it is a tad-bit unsafe due to very choppy waters, we had to hold on for our dear lives to avoid broken bones haha.

Also available are ATV's for hire. There are simple quad-wheeled bike-like vehicles. It was a lot of fun to ride along the coastline on one of these.
The guys who we got the ATVs from (group called The Adventure Bay) also advertise Surfing - however this is only for people who actually know how to Surf (the guys claimed that they have been trying it unsuccessfully for the past 10 months as it a very intensive and skill based sport).

A must visit are the 2 "Mohanas", i.e. the joining of the rivers with the bay. The best times to go to these places are during sunset/sunrise. They are very scenic and the setting sun just creates a beautiful sight. The popular one is ~4km from RoseValley and the one on the other end in around 14~15km away.

It is best to go to these places on the local open-vans as the beach is very crab infested and one's car may get stuck in the sand which has been weakened. In such a case, the locals may rip you off. The people claimed charging 4~5k and even upto 20~25k to help you get your car out of the sand. (It is very intensive work with upto 10~20 people needed to lift the car etc.). All this is based on local reports, so take it with a grain of salt (sand in this case).

If you are driving around on the beach, be sure to follow the path and it is advised to definitely avoid driving in the water or during high-tide as it is very risky + there will be a lot of corrosion damage to the car.

Wrapping up this really long review (my longest yet), I would say that the resort is very enjoyable for a weekend getaway with some quality time with friends or family. Larger groups would also work really well.
The beach is quite pristine and still relatively unknown though it has drawn a lot of attention recently - however it is still a far cry from the full commercialized beaches like Digha/Puri and their vast crowds.
A good place to stay with great food defines such a trip's enjoy-ability and the Rose Valley property definitely lives up to the challenge.

Room Tip: The rooms are quite small and dull. Definitely go for the Sail House or the other "houses"...

Mandermoni Beach is one of the beaches where you can plunge your car into the sea and enjoy the drive with salt water splashing ( It does take a toll on the Car engines) . After a drive of 10 Min on the sea you arrive at Rose Valley. Though the service is not up to mark but the rooms are probably the best that you can find in West Bengal . Liquor still not permitted, It has a water amusement park though but is operational only on certain timings this is complimentry with the rooms. The Ambiance outside is wow. In case you are looking for a short week end away from Kolkata this is the place

Room Tip: Try the sail room its fabulous , A sail house can easily accomodate a family

I am a victim of the careless ness of the ROSE VALLEY management in running a totally unsafe and dangerousboat rides. on 8/4/12, i alongwith my family, a total of six bought tkts for SPEED BOAT ride at 1720hrs. sea was turbulent and tide rising. the safety aspects which shud be foremost at such places, were totally absent. Glaring gaps were:
1. No warning for children and we were allowed to carry 2 yr old on the boat.
2. even in high tide ride was allowed.
3. no hand rails in front of seats to hold on to.
i had an accident within 3 minutes of my ride and have a broken NOSE, BROKEN JAW and 2 teeth less.
my intention is to warn others not to met the fate i hv met with.
god bless u all.

I visited this hotel in the second week of March with my wife and parents. The drive from Kolkata was a bit tiring but the hotel was very good. We reached around 3 in the afternoon and heard the restaurants were closed for lunch. In a high price hotel like this food service should be better.
