“Vanmikanathar Tyagarajar Arrorar”

Thyagarajaswamy Temple
Reviewed November 25, 2013

This is a collection of many small temples and is called the Peria Koil or the Big Temple. There are four main sannadhis - Vanmikanathar, Tyagaraja, Neelotplalambal and Kamalambal. The muchikunda murals and the murals from a later Maratha period are a must see. So is the large temple tank.

We came to know about this temple through our local taxi driver. We were staying in Tiruvaroor and he asked us if we had seen the 'Big temple'. We said 'no'. He said that we should see it and that it is as big if not bigger than the Thanjavur temple. And it was. Again a big temple, with old structures still in place, quiet, very pleasant especially in the evenings. We went to the temple twice, once in the evening and again next day morning. Spent close to about 2.5 hours. The temple tank outside the temple is huge, is filled with water and is clean. Don't miss the puliyogare that is sold in the temple in the evenings. it is awesome. There is temple right in the middle of the tank. The house where Thiagarajar lived is near the temple.

Huge temple. Lord shiva is the main deity. The stone carvings and statues are simply superb. Big Corridors. For any person loving the pre historic arts and sculptures, this is a god place to visit. One just wonders how all this was possible in those days when there was no formal engineering education.

Visiting this temple gives you a solace and also enriches your knowledge about the prehistoric times

While visited the temple in the first week of March 2013, I was charmed as it is one of the old temples of India with neatly maintained. Its huge space with architect is also attractive. One can pass his/her time by moving around temple premises. It was a sublime experience for me.
