“After six years it is still a great vacation destination”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 9, 2006

My wife and I have been guests at the St. James's Club resort for the last six years. We find that it is an excellent break from the cold Maine winters.

It is a place to relax and take life at a much slower pace. The accomodations are very comfortable and the all inclusive is the way to go. If you are looking for a vacation jam packed with sports and entertainment you may be a little disappointed. A good book and a cool drink go a long way.

It is very clean and the people are kind and heplful. But remember, it is Antigua and the speed of service is at a comfortable pace for both the customer and the server.

The food is above average and the Piccolo Mondo menu rivals
most mainland restaurants. The casino seems to pay out a little more than your average casino, which makes it fun and easy to play often.

There were a lot of negative comments on reviews here but we have travelled the Carribbean extensively and stayed at mainly all inclusive resorts so we have different expectations. Being from America keep in mind the workers run on "Island Time". This means having to wait patiently 20 minutes to get your ice cream after your meal (and you have to try every flavor as its homemade and delicious!). There are buffets as well where you help yourself or you can always order a la carte off the menu. There is a great kids menu as we had a 6 year old and 3 year old with us and they had plenty of choices for food. The kids camp was very well organized and safely run and our 6 year old loved it! Gives parents a break as well! The resort is well kept and large enough for golf cart service to and from any part of the resort. They even have mongooses, gecko lizards, and birds around the property. The rooms are average except for the bathroom which had the largest bathtub I have ever seen in a hotel with double vanity sinks. We had a refridgerator in the room but did not use it being on the all inclusive plan. The all inclusive is the way to go as the food is VERY expensive- for example one night the dinner buffet would have cost $40 US for adults and $30 US for Kids! As for the staff, they were very helpful and friendly. Some reviews say they are unfriendly or rude but you have to realize there is a cultural difference and we found that if you talked to them and were friendly too that they responded back. The majority seemed happy to be working there and you have to keep in mind that it was very hot and they were wearing their uniforms all day in the heat - how nice would you be? The beach on the atlantic side was gorgeous and clear enough to snorkel with tide pools and crabs. The mamora bay side beach is beautiful as well and has watersports such as seakayaks, hobie cats, paddle boats and motorized skiing for additional costs. We did not take any tours or excursions and they seemed rather pricey. The taxi ride from the airport about 30 minutes away and costs $32 US for 4 and it can be a fun, bumpy, wild ride if not used to island driving. There are 4 pools and we liked the main reef pool which had a bar right there and great ocean view. There is a drink cart we saw come down the beach so you do not have to walk over to the bar which has sodas and rum punch. The drinks were great with a large variety of mixed and frozen and the beer Wadadli, Red Stripe, and caribe. Overall the hotel is quiet and laid back- no shows at night like some resorts-not a whole lot to do after dinner. Cable tv in the room is very limited to about 10 channels but who comes to watch TV??? The guests were mainly European this time of summer with more Americans during the winter. Many of the people we met come every year to this resort. It is worth seeing and trying out..........ENJOY

Having just returned from a week at the St. James' Club, I would like to add my input to the rest of the reviews on this site. (I think it's only fair, since I always look up potential holiday destinations here before I book).

For those who don't like reading a long review, let me say simply that this place is ideal for a family vacation. Not only was the resort absolutely gorgeous, with amazing views, great food, and friendly staff.....but there was tons to entertain both us and the kids.

I especially thought that it was great to see a resort with 4 seperate pools, as well as 2 beaches.....so that if you don't feel like going down to the sand.....or if one or two of your choices are crowded, there is always somewhere quite, where you can enjoy more secluded and romantic moments with your partner.

Also, it is nice to see that the hotel goes some way in entertaining us adults as well as the kids. So that while there was plently of water-sports, tennis courts and organised events for our kids to enjoy in; The wife and I were well catered to with the gym, spa and casino on sight!

Let me add that as mentioned in some other reviews, it would be very prudent to opt for the all-inclusive option. The food at the different restaurants on the resort are varied and very very good. On top of this the staff are unbelievably friendly and really add to the experience of the caribbean trip. Also, the price includes alcohol...and there are plenty of original combinations which the bartenders have come up with, which are very worthwhile trying.

All in all, we all had a wonderful time, and I have already promised the kids that we will be returning next year. I can not recommend the St. James' Club enough!

  • Liked — So many options of what to do - for everyone in the family.
  • Disliked — Having to leave at the end of the week!
  • Tips/Secrets — Take up the all-inclusive option. You won't regret it.

Just got back from a great week at the St. James Club. We were there July 1-8, 2006.
We found many mixed reviews and were pleasantly surprised when we arrived.

The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. We have been to other properties and other islands where the property is in various states of disrepair. There is a small amount of construction on a few units, but you hardly notice it due to the beautiful layout of the place.

There are 4 swimming pools and 2 beaches. We loved the adult pool which was near our unit. Many times we were there alone...beautiful view of Mamora Bay. There is a large pool with a bar which overlooks the Atlantic side and it is a gorgeous view! There is another pool with a view of the Atlantic, and a children's pool. All were clean and nicely designed.

We stayed in a 2 bedroom, 2 bath villa. After a long day of travel, lost luggage and getting lost getting to the resort, we arrrived at our villa to find white bathrobes on the bed with fresh flowers. Fresh linens in the bathroom with fresh flowers as well! Maid service every day was wonderful! We had a large dining/family area. Kitchen with everything but a stove, and a large deck with lounge chairs and table and chairs with a view of Mamora Bay. Lots of birds doing their "thing" on the deck, but we asked the maid to clean it and it was done.

Beaches - Mamora Bay is very pretty, but the water is very calm, almost stagnant. We swam there one day. However, the beach itlself is gorgeous, lots of palapas and chairs, water sports that are included in price for all guests.
Atlantic side beach is also beautiful. We liked this beach better - nice waves and a great all day breeze. A little seaweed, but they rake it daily. There are units directly on this beach...looked more like hotel rooms to us....but what a view. In fact, it seems that due to the layout, most every unit there (and there are a lot) has some type of view. A drink cart comes around as well.

There are five restaurants. We only ate in one, The Docksider, because we were not on the all incusive plan. We prefer to cook our own meals most nights. The only comment we can make is that if you want to eat at one of them separate of all inclusive, they are very expensive. The other problem is that the grocery store is about a 45 minute drive. They have small markets 10 minutes away, but you really don't want to, nor can you get much there. Every day there is afternoon tea, coffee and snacks.

There seem to be many events going on at the property. We saw a limbo and fire act one night by the pool which was great. There is a casino, a gift shop, a small food/deli/internet shop and a kids club. We used the fitness room and found that to be fine.

The staff is wonderful. They have carts that will pick you up and drop you off anywhere on the property. And the drivers are all nice. The Dive Shop could not accomodate my husband so the Tour Desk arranged another dive from English Harbour in 5 minutes. We didn't get the unit that was promised to us upon arrival but were told if we didn't like it, they would move us. No problem, because we loved it.

We rented a car even though people said not to. The roads are not marked at all, but that was ok, most islands are like that. The roads have a lot of potholes, but my husband loved driving them because there is hardly any traffic. I don't know if that was due to it being slow season, but we loved it. There are more goats than cars on the roads. We loved driving around and seeing the island. Stingray City is great and is only a 20 minute drive. You will save yourself $60 in taxis if you have your own car. We also went to what is now our favorite Caribbean Beach....Half Moon Bay. There is great snorkelling off the shore at Long Bay. You can then drive less than 5 minutes and see Devil's Bridge.
We also visited Nelson's Dockyard. If you do go in the summer, be aware that some things are closed. But we thought there was more than enough to do in a week. We never even made it to St. Johns, the largest city. We also felt very safe, not so in other islands.

All in all, a great resort and a great island!

We have just returned from 2 weeks of heaven at the St James Club Antigua. The surroundings were beautiful, the food was delicious, the drinks were flowing freely. The majority of the staff were friendly, helpful and always smiling, with the exception of a couple that let the side down. Our beach front room was perfect, and included everything we needed, a spacious bathroom, a coffee maker, a fridge, plenty of wardrobe space and AIR CONDITIONING - perfect.

Customer Services staff were very helpful in all areas and very willing to help out with any problem or query.

The Casino was very well run and well organised, with friendly, professional staff - the only downside to the Casino was that I didn't win!!!!!!!!

Cocktail night on a Monday was a good night, as was the fire eater. Great entertainment, but maybe put on a little bit late when children are involved. Crab racing was fantastic but the children found it hard to stay awake until 10.15 when it started.

Overall, a brilliant holiday, perfect accommodation, perfect weather - perfect!!!

Not exactly a small Caribbean Hotel as advertised.
Service in all four restaurants is good - in Piccolo Mondo excellent. Food is average to good.
The grounds are superbly groomed, and the beaches and all facilities clean and tidy.
Accommodation in the Beach is excellent and well serviced, but soundproofing between floors is poor; considering that the down-stairs is more expensive one would expect a few less sleepless nights.
Regrettably, having been voted the best family hotel in the area, some residents felt it was acceptable to share their pre-school age and truant children with all. It seems that a number of couples, in an attempt to recapture vicariously through their children the delights of their honeymoon, take their children on long haul to hot, uncomfortable and totally unsuitable climates and expect them to be looked after by others. Well I would like to recommend Centre Parks, Disneyland, the NSPCC and a good marriage counsellor, or a combination of these.
Be warned all of you who want a peaceful holiday!

We stayed a week at the St James Club end of May beginning of June. Like so many others we read the reviews and got a little apprehensive. No need though! Absolutely fantastic time, could not fault it. Only problem we had was with car hire, no suspension, gave us a good laugh though<and this down to Avis!! We had the hotel make us a picnic up, at $18 a head fantastic, all packed into a huge ice box. We were there with our friends celebrating our wedding anniversary and loved it so much we have booked to take the kids back October half term.

As someone else listed, and as the hotel advertise it is a 'formal' hotel, you get what you want from it and every, and I mean every member of staff were polite and spoke with a smile if approached. My husbad witnessed some off handness by staff but this was down to a 'rude' guest, you get back what you give here.
