we had an amazing time after the first 4 days into our holiday the beaches and scenery were beautiful , but when we arrived we were put into a family room which was well below 4 star and what we were used to, we were moved after complaining but our friends who we went on holiday with also had a below par room and were not moved for 4 days. Eventually we were put into a villa with our friends and our holiday began Once moved our holiday was great but again I agree with the other review re the queuing for meals at breakfast and the evening meals. The entertainment was also a disappointment as it ended at 22.00 hour and we were expecting it to last a lot longer you just got into the mood to dance when it just came to an end. The beaches were wonderful the weather amazing ,most of the staff were lovely but there were some who were quite rude and appeared to resent you but over all it was a good holiday shared with wonderful friends.

St James Club is a very special place. From the moment you arrive, and a glass of champagne is offered, the tiredness of the flight melts away. The friendliness and nature of the hotel staff is immediately apparent, although the fantastic humour and banter is only gradually introduced over your stay.

The resort is in a stunning location with 2 contrasting beaches. Coco's is a welcome breezy one for when it becomes too hot whilst the Mamora Bay is a more sheltered bay where there is a variety of water sports to try. We tried hobie cat sailing, kayaking and windsurfing. The hotel operates a very fair system of booking which meant that even when the resort was busy we never had a problem getting a boat out each day; the instructors were also very good with the children who learned to sail hobie cats and windsurf to a much higher level than we expected. There was plenty of sun beds by the pool and on each of the beaches.

The food at the resort was of a high standard with a choice of restaurants to eat at; all of which offered variety, quality and quantity (the latter only if required). The major hardship of our day was working out where to eat and what to choose on the menu! The Docksider restaurant was a family favourite as it was a magical venue to eat at night particularly with the lanterns lit and the sea beside your table.

After a hard day at the beach we tended to relax with a cocktail in Mamora Bay. This was a lovely way to end the day.

It was our first time to Antigua and we were worried about what 2 teenage children would do as we usually have reasonably active holidays. I ought not have worried as the children loved it. They made friends, joined in impromptu games of cricket and the daily beach volleyball and just hung out at the beach or the games pavillion. There was also a movie every night in an air con room where they could chill out.

We spent a few days exploring and went to sting ray city and the jungle zip line which they loved! We did a Segway tour, catamaran cruise and a trip to the capital St. John's. Probably the only thing we wouldn't do again is the trip to St. John's as the shopping wasn't that extensive and prices were not dissimilar to the UK.

Unfortunately we had to have an extended stay at the hotel due to my husband needing a short admission in the hospital. It was then I had the privilege to really experience the hotel and see the true nature of the staff and the Antiguan people.

I was treated with extraordinary kindness and care with staff from the hotel popping into the hospital on their days off to check we were alright at the hospital and the hotel kept regular updates on my husband's progress. They couldn't help or do enough for us during a really worrying and stressful time. I didn't just feel like a guest I felt like I had become a member of their family. The kindness and generosity of spirit is engendered by the leadership of the owner Mr Barrett, and the GM Mr Brown, and appears to run through all of the staff.

It is to the hotels credit that many of its guests, and certainly most of the people I met, were repeat visitors to the St James Club. Some have been going every year for many years and others I met came twice a year. Now we have experienced this special, beautiful place we can't wait to return.

Have a Mango Daiquiri waiting on the beach for me!

Room Tip: We stayed in the premier rooms which were lovely and had a nice view of the sea. When we return we w...

We stayed in this hotel for 11 nights. Our total group consisted of 26 people (a mix of families with small and teenage children). The hotel is beautiful and has something for everyone. We enjoyed the wide range of water sports that were included in our package. We found all the staff friendly and helpful. Our thanks to shirley (reef deck bar) who looked after us all! The activities team were very good at getting everyone involved and keeping things fun. Our thanks to paula (wedding co-ordinater at st james) who made my sisters wedding day perfect. We would definitely recommend this hotel and can't wait to go back!

The hotel is great bang for buck. It isn't a five-star resort but it is very good for what you pay. We had no issues with staff, food, rooms, etc. We truly enjoyed talking with the locals--the people of Antigua are lovely, and they are truly the highlight of an amazing trip. Rodney, Super Dave, Jordon, Lisa, Matara, Lucy--all provided great service.

If you need a cab driver, make sure you ask for Benjy. He is WONDERFUL! He kept us intrigued with history about the island, was a kind gentle soul, and went the extra mile to make us feel welcome. For example, when he said mangoes were a common crop in Antigua, I told him those were my favorite fruits. When he picked us up the next time, he brought me a bag of mangoes as a treat. What a sweet, generous man! We will never forget him.

I went on this trip with some girlfriends. We selected St. James because we liked the big resort feel. It was nice to meet other travelers, and we became fast friends with many. We also liked the options of water sports--that was a great treat and I highly recommend people take advantage of it. Most resorts will charge for use of paddleboats, paddleboards, and Hobie cats. St. James lets guests use these for free, and that is a wonderful perk. We also participated in the water aerobics and beach volleyball--had a great time!

My recommendations are to keep the DJ during all nights of the week, and also to have a pool bar. This was the 1st Caribbean island I have been to that doesn't have pool bars.

I would stay here again.

Our family of four has been visiting this wonderful resort every year since 1999. We stay in our timeshare villa but have also stayed in the hotel part of the complex. This resort has a special place in our hearts and we have recommended it to family and friends alike who have also had great holidays here. There is a wide variety of activities including water sports and exercise classes but there is also peace and tranquillity for those who just want to rest and relax. The pools are excellent. The "adult only" pool a real bonus and the new floats on the water of the calm beach just wonderful - there is the "windy" beach too for those of you who like waves and to snorkel. I have noticed that the gymnasium has become much busier in the early mornings (cabin crew?) over the years and in an ideal world, a larger space would be better. In the main the staff are fantastic and very friendly but you do get the occasional person who is "having a bad day". Personally, whilst there is a variety of food on offer, it is not as varied or as high a standard as it used to be. (The beach grill is excellent). Perhaps the new chef will change this? Prince in Guest Services always gives us a warm "welcome home" greeting and it is so nice to see familiar faces, year in, year out. There have been many noticeable improvements to the resort over the past couple of years and the fact that it has just enjoyed the busiest June and July season bears out that the management, in the main, are getting it right. Nowhere is perfect but St James's Club for us is right up there.

Room Tip: The Royal Suites are really special with fabulous views.

Fab holiday, great beaches, always sun beds, not overcrowded, fab food and drinks BUT let down by some awful rude, arrogant staff. Reception and breakfast staff always ok. Got fed up queuing for dinner and breakfast even when it was buffet, 'waiting' for a member of staff to show you to one of many empty tables. Beach bar staff mostly AWFUL, one lady did not even smile at me for 2 weeks. Was also very rude to my 9 and 16 year old boys. Staff in rainbow garden mostly ok, other 2 restaurants very hit and miss. Spoke to manager in first week and staff attitude did improve but not at the beach bar. Did taint my holiday rather, was not what I expected after amazing St Lucian staff last year. Get Alfred on the beach drink buggy to teach the other staff about customer service, he was the best staff member there. Consistently friendly. Would go back but only after reading reviews to reassure me that the staff had become a bit more customer friendly!

An absolutely amazing experience. The whole complex was spotlessly clean. There were choices of restaurants to eat at which catered for most peoples' needs. The staff were all extremely friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them. The two beaches were totally different, one was windy which was very welcome in the heat of the day and the other was ideal for swimming and the various water sports. Highly recommended. Would definitely go back.
