“Not great for the price.”
Reviewed August 13, 2013

We stayed here last week for 2 weeks in one of the club rooms.
First impressions were good, the location is amazing, the resort is peaceful and serene which made up for the clean but dated and slightly damp smelling room.
However as our stay progressed we found more and more irritations with the place and rapidly went off it!
The main problems came from the dining- you are required to book in advance and comply with a dress code which is fine, however to then wait repeatedly for 20 mins or so EVERY night to be seated is not acceptable. Waiter service was random- obviously some had done the course, others not! It was not uncommon to have drink poured on me by sloppy waitresses in a hurry or drinks not delivered at all! Breakfast, though plentiful was boring and repetative choices.
Reception staff also seemed disinterested, often talking to others whilst dealing with my query or walking off to do something else. Not great.
That said, water sports were great and very friendly as was the kids club but I won't be returning!

Dear Valued Guests,

Thank you for your feedback on your recent stay. Guest comments are very important to us as we strive to deliver a stellar vacation experience and work hard to consistently improve all aspects of the resort.

St. James Club Antigua offers four distinct dining experiences with a wide variety of high quality fresh food which reflects the wonderful cuisiine of the Caribbean as well as international flavors and style. Two of our restaurants require reservations which can be made a day in advance. In addition, we have four lounges and bars offering a variety of cocktails, wines, fruit punch and soda. The vast majority of our guests truly enjoy the culinary experience at the resort which they typically highlight in surveys and online reviews. We were fortunate enough to align good flights and villa dates at the St James off-season. The resort is quite understated but has great facilities. The local beaches were beautiful, the pools were fantastic for the children in the late afternoon and the water-sports on Mamora bay were excellent. I was pleased we did not take up the all-in package. The restaurants on site were at best 'adequate' but definitely not worth the price they were asking.

Overall we were very disappointed with the hotel. Although our room had a great view over the beach, it felt very tired and old fashioned. However it was clean. The service in the Rainbow & Docksiders was appalling. We had to wait half an hour to be seated as most nights only 1 of these main restaurants were open (until people complained) once we were seated it seemed to take forever to be offered a drink or for the food to be served at Rainbows (Docksiders was buffet). Most waitresses were very surly - possibly due to being understaffed & over worked? The food was average. However Piccolo's was excellent (lobster fantastic!) and service much friendlier, although you have to pay a supplement of 35 dollars pp but was certainly worth it. Just make sure you get a table on the edge of the restaurant as the ones inside were very dark.
One of the reasons we chose St James was the watersports on offer as our son is a keen & experienced sailor and was looking forward to taking out the hobiecats etc and were under the impression that it would appeal to all levels as one of the beaches is on the windy Atlantic Sea. However, on the first day of taking a hobiecat out, we sailed from the watersports centre out of the bay and towards the Atlantic sea. 30 minutes later, we were aware of the rescue boat approaching and were told we were not allowed to take the boat out of the Caribbean side of the bay! We had to return immediately. No one had told us this when taking the boat out and we couldn't understand why this was the case particularly as there was no breeze in the Caribbean bay and our son is an experienced sailor! He was most disappointed. The boys enjoyed the beach volleyball every afternoon as did I with the aqua aerobics every morning.
On our last day, we had to check out our room by midday and weren't being taken to the airport until 4pm. When enquiring if there was somewhere we could shower, we were most surprised to find we had to hire a room for 25 dollars for the hour! I've never heard of any other hotel charging for this service. To add insult to injury, the room wasn't clean and had the previous occupants dirty towels on the bathroom floor and I had to return to reception to ask for clean towels. When mentioning this to reception, only a lame apology was made and no offer of a refund. It felt like they didn't care as we were leaving shortly.
On a plus note, we loved Antigua and would definitely return, just not to St James. We did 4 trips which were all excellent. Shirley Heights on Sunday nights - a must do, although felt very touristy. A helicopter tour of the island which was facinating, the catamaran day trip round the island with snorkelling and string ray city which was fab - dozens of stingrays in the sea which you could swim with, stroke and feed! A fantastic experience!

Room Tip: Chose one on the beachside - lovely views.

We stayed at St. James Club for one week. The rooms were clean and well appointed. It seems all the rooms have some view of the water. We took the all inclusive plan since this resort is isolated from the rest of the island and not easy to go out and the prices for ordering a la cart are too high. They don't ptovide bottled water and have their own purification system. It is safe to drink water served from the bars and restaurants but not recommended to drink the tap water from your room. They do not stock your room fridge. The variety of food selection at the buffet and restaurants is limited compared to other resorts, however, the quality is better than some five star resorts in the Caribbean. Plenty of fresh salads, vegetables and fresh fish. Breakfast is the most dissapointing. They should add a toaster and a better selection of breads and bagels. They bring you a small basket of toast when you sit at the table. By the time you get your omlet or eggs the toasts are cold and hard and therefore inedible. The drinks are of good quality and plenty. Inez makes the best Margaritas! Staff is corteous and professional except for the Bar and the Grill stations on Mamora Bay beach. They need to have more training on customer relations. The entertainment is lacking overall. Every night they provide a live band from 7 to 10 pm. Not all the bands are worthwhile. We enjoyed two bands Axes and Karisma and they attracted the most crowd. After 10:00 pm some nights they may have a DJ or karaoke at the Bar. Otherwise not much happening after 10:00. There are two beaches. Coconut beach on the Atlantic side was windy and full of weeds and jelly fish. Mamora Bay beach on the other hand was calm and clean. The resort provides good water sport equipment during the day for free. It never got too busy and they had plenty of them available. The Dive Shop staff also kept a watchful eye for anyone who got stranded in the water and rescued them quickly with motor boat. There are several excursion tours for snorkeling, zip lining, exploring the inland..etc. A hotel shuttle for $14 rountrip can take you to St. John town in 35 min. The scenary is nice but St. John not worth staying long. The town caters to cruise lines tourists and most souvenir stores sell the same products. You can buy rum at the duty free stores of the airport for almost the same price. The weather was beautiful and dry at the begining of August in Antigua and the night sky breathtaking! On the whole we had a peaceful relaxing holiday.

I went to St James for 11 nights with my husband and 16 year old son. Check in was quick and efficient and the glass of sparkling wine was gratefully received! We had a premium room overlooking the gardens and ocean on the windy side of the resort. It was plenty big enough for the 3 of us and the bathroom was huge with 2 sinks. We had a problem with the air conditioning but within 1 hour of telling guest services it was mended. We had to ask for extra towels and clean glasses on a couple of occasions and again these were quickly dealt with. The best restaurant which is part of the AI was Docksiders with a very pleasant atmosphere. We ate at the Italian restaurant ($35 each inc. drinks) which was very nice but far too dark. Cocos had the same menu for lunch and dinner served from 11am - 11pm which got very monotonous. The staff on the whole were friendly and helpful. This was a very relaxing holiday and we would return to St James Club.

Room Tip: If you have mobility problems ask for a premium room as these are located on the ground and 1st floo...

The overall performance is comparable to 3-4 star Cuban resort, but you pay much more to visit this place. Food average, not much choice of fruit. Seafood just on occasion and poorly prepared. The staff looks very unfriendly. Weird collar shirt dress codes in the buffet ( please let them know that the middle of the last century is over ). My kid got food poisoning from spoiled watermelon, had to visit the hospital, no MD on site. Wait lines sometimes 30+ min to be sited in the buffet or the restaurant ( and I've been told this is low season for them).
Overall no Caribbean charm that we're used to.
Please note this is first review of mine, and we travel a lot.
Not going back.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for your comments about your recent stay here with us at St. James's Club. We value the gift of feedback as a way to continuously improve the guest experience at the resort.

We strongly disagree with this review. In fact. The St. James's Club is one of the Caribbean's most popular resorts noted for our immaculate and beautifully landscaped property, incredibly hospitable staff, eclectic dining options and a plethora of fun activities.

We are not sure what the issue is with this particular individual but we would like you to know that this is not the holiday experienced by our guests.

During the period in which this guest stayed with us there was absolutely no incidence of food poisoning via watermelon or any other food item. The hotel did everything in our power to assist this family with respect to their ill child including arranging transportation to a medical facility as well as assisting with laundering soiled clothing and providing Gatorade at no expense to the guest.

The St. James's Club offers guests a wide variety of culinary experiences sure to please any palate. St. James's Club boasts four distinct restaurants, each serving up a delicious mix of Caribbean dishes and international favorites. From beachfront casual, to Classic Italian sophistication - our restaurants offer menu choices that are crafted to appeal to all palates. In addition there are four bars/lounges dotting the resort with all types of beverages available to whet the whistle.

St. James's Club is a vibrant, colorful, beachfront resort. We host hundreds of very happy guests each week, and we consistently earn excellent reviews amongst our guests as evidenced in our guest surveys and on online forums This is because we work very diligently to deliver a relaxing, stress free vacation in a beautiful setting, with some of the friendliest staff in the Caribbean.

Warm ocean breezes, the sound of the surf and the birds when you awaken in the morning.
Beautiful view of the beach and the mountains. Antigua. A paradise for all of us to enjoy.
Your stress will just melt away. Truly. The St. James Club was amazing. Our room had every amenity you could desire. My favorite part was our balcony facing the beach. The restaurants were great. Breakfast was delicious. Fresh omelets, croissants, fruits. amazing. Dinner were varied and delicious. We enjoyed Caribbean, and other cuisines. Piccolo Mondo Restaurant. The best lobster I have ever tasted, prepared superbly. The beach was beautiful, and the water sports awesome. First time I tried Stand Up Paddle Boarding. The Beach Attendant was more than happy to give me a lesson. The Tranquility Spa was so relaxing. The massage tables and treatment rooms just made you feel great. The staff was very Zen and very competent. The staff was warm and friendly. "Always a Pleasure" as they repeatedly told us when we asked for something. We visited St. Johns and bought pretty colorful island print sun dresses. We took a catamaran trip to Green Island. Full day. Worth every minute. One of the highlights, "Shirley Heights", which takes place every Sunday in Antigua. We heard great bands and had an amazing time. I would recommend St. James Club for couples, families, and trips with friends. Truly an amazing experience. I can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the beach. Second floor was great. Very quite and peaceful.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for your feedback about your recent stay with us at The St. James's Club. We are sorry that you were disappointed with your stay.

In the interest of energy efficiency, our A/C units are designed to function with motion sensors and the doors closed. We inform our guests of this upon check in so that they understand how the units operate. This was communicated very clearly and was further reiterated with the assistance of the duty manager. We have never had a guest complain about this aspect of the room accommodations.

The St. James Club Antigua is one of the Caribbean's most beloved resorts and enjoys a very high repeat factor due to the idyllic location, fine dining, fun activities, beautiful accommodations with a gracious and hospitable staff.
