“Serene estate getaway”
Reviewed May 18, 2012

If you are looking for a place to go for rambling walks, to go kayaking with your family, to sit back and quaff the spirit of your choice, all the while gorging on local delicacies, whilst ensconced in the lap of luxury... well this is the resort you want to resort to.

We had a lovely break from the hustle and bustle of the city life, doing everything and yet nothing. The resident friendly canines were our waling companions, attentive yet giving us space. The staff was there discreetly helpful. The serenity of the estate adjoining and the views from atop the hilltop were amazing ... literally a walk in the clouds.
You dont need to go for the massage / spa, nature itself shall soothe you. And the rooms are done up tastefully with luxury and comfort being the key. The bungalows have their own private garden and outdoor jacuzzi.

Room Tip: Go for the luxury villa if its in your budget, though the paddy cottages are equally good. before se...

Its a nice place to getaway from your hectic schedule and enjoy a relaxed weekend.. we went there without any expectations.. but thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The best part of the stay there is, you are occupied with a lot of activities.... especially the coffee plantation walk.. it was amazing. The staff and the manager make you feel at home. the food is simple and delicious. The rooms are spacious. would love to go back there. great experience and fond memories.

Room Tip: all the rooms come with a nice view.

The property has a wonderful ambience. Scenic, well planned, well kept. Room decor is beautiful. Staff is very helpful, and went out of their way to accommodate us. No room phones, and no mobile network gave a lovely cutoff feeling from our harried lives.

Room Tip: Al the villas have excellent view, each villa has its own path, and is placed such that there is tot...

The Flameback Lodges are high up in the mountains and in the midst of a coffee plantation.

You are accommodated in lodges with a short walk to the central lodge where breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided. The food is excellent. They have an outstanding chef.

The evening begins with drinks - try the local Cabernet Sauvignon - round a camp fire. All drinks are complimentary by the way and included in the room rate.

The scenery around is fantastic and Bharath, the Lodge manager, provides wonderful personal service.

The Lodge was established around 3 years ago, is well maintained maintained with private lakes and a glorious swimming pool, and is named after the Flameback woodpecker local to the area as are monkeys and numerous bird life.

It was established by a wild life photographer who also happens to be a member of the State Royal Family.........

This is one place that lived up to its reviews. We spent 3 nights in Flameback. What struck me first was the tranquility. The property is suurounded by hills and coffee planattions, there is even a small lake. We stayed in the paddy cottage, aptly named as we were surroundered by lush paddy fields. It was almost like we were in Bali. The cottage has a nice sit out but we did not get to use it much as it was raining most of the time we were there. We had a look at the villa too but i think the cottage is perfect for a couple. There is a very nice pool too. What i like the best was absence of phone signals! I think only BSNL phones work up there. We called our folks from the reception. And if you a dog lover you will fall in love with the resident alsatians, they welcome you everytime you enter the dining area, they come with you on your walks or guard you cottage door through the night :)
The staff there are very warm and friendly. Food was simply amazing, I am sure i put on a few kgs while i was there. Both indian and continental food is available. Be sure to try their fish dishes! The choice of beverages is ok. There are a lot of outdoor activities that one can do, but we went in the rainy season so the only thing we could do was go on long walks. You can ask them to take you on drives in their SUV. There are some very scenic places, waterfalls, and ancient temples.
The only thing that we were not happy about are any signboards leading to the resort. We had a bit of difficulty, even though they assisted us with directions on the phone.
Overall we had a wonderful time!! We will be back but this time when its not raining :) Thank you Bharath and rest of the staff for making our stay memorable!

Spent two days at the Flameback with another family. Was an outstanding experience. The cottages are very well appointed and comfortable, the food is excellent, and the staff was really warm and friendly. I would recommend the resort without any exceptions!!

Just one tip - it is best to give the resort a call once you reach Mudigere, as you will need help finding the place.

Flameback is 250kms/5.5hrs from Bangalore. the last 1 hr of the journey has awful roads, the rest is sooperbly maintained roads, absoultely scenic journey.
the resort was delightful, Kartikeya's plantation seems to be everywhere, its 250acres of the lushest foliage - a birders dream. The resort itself sits on an 80acre property i think. 3 of us stayed in the luxury villa. they had an extra bed put in there. we were in the first villa which had a beautiful deck. the villa was ultra spacious with a large bedroom, a living room, pantry, outside shower, one big bathroom with a jaccuzi and a 2nd toilet. it was tastefully done with wood panelling and all 360 degree views thanks to XL glass windows/doors all around. it's completely private, you don't even see the next villa.
my fav part is that there is zero cell fone network thru the property, also no landlines in the rooms. uninterrupted bliss it is.
the food - was good, the best of local cuisine, all alocohol and other beverages (including the mini bar) are included in the room tariff.
activities - their drivers take you in the resort SUV's to all attractions. we were taken in the Pajero to Devarmane and the valley. It was the most breathtaking sight ever. the driver Surendranath knows his way around and gave us all the local lore. he was great.
we were also taken on the plantation walk, where we saw the rest of the estate, coffee, oranges, the owners beautiful bungalow and the rest.
we paid Rs.13000 for 2 for a night + rs.3780 for the 3rd person in the room. this is all inclusive, F&B and all activities minus the spa. this resort id tranquil, not fulla people and screaming kids. they have no more than 3 villas, a few paddy cottages and 2 suites, so you gotta book ahead during busy weekends and season time. all in all this was the best resort in Chikmagalur, even better than the Serai or the Taj resort.
