“Comfortable with some useful extras”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 3, 2014 via mobile

We enjoyed our stay here and the B&B met our needs well. Our room was spacious and comfortable and the breakfast offered a variety of local produce. We enjoyed the shared table and breakfast chatter. It has a good position for exploring Lewis and being close to the Callinish standing stones.
There's a fee extras here too that we appreciated - the many books that are available to guests to browse (and maps and walks to short term borrow) and Don was able to show us his hawks and his elegant owl - we had good weather for this! And we enjoyed a meal - but remember to book in advance for - their own pork was tasty.

Couldn't find this place at first, phoned the house no reply, phoned the mobile no reply but did get a phone call back so we got directions. We arrived there cold, wet and miserable after a 43 mile cycle from Tarbert which was very hilly, the rain and wind hadn't stopped all day. There was no-one about when we got there at first but the guy who owns it's son came out after we had wandered about a while. We put our bikes in the shed which was great but there was no mention of a dry room for our wet clothes, he did mention a clothes horse in the bathroom which we found but we were so wet nothing had dried by morning. There hadn't really been anywhere en route to stop and eat but I remembered seeing on the website that there were evening meals served on alternate nights and sandwiches could be made on the in-between nights, unfortunately between us booking and getting there that had changed to Sunday's only which didn't help us much on a Thursday. We had the twin room which was very basic, no sign at all of wifi so we couldn't even try to track down somewhere to eat. The only information we could in our room was for a restaurant in Stornoway which you would need a car to get to. Fortunately I have an aunt who lives at the top of the island, she phoned her friend who lived near Leumadir and we went round there for something to eat.

We duly filled in our breakfast sheet, ticking pretty much everything on the list, and left it for morning. The beds were comfortable so we slept quite well. We went for breakfast in the morning and after a while I was given a rather empty looking plate but I was hungry so I started to eat it. A while later my husband's plate arrived with one lonely wee kipper on it, we advised this was not what was ordered and the son went away and got the breakfast sheet. Apparently they had looked at the sheet for a couple with the same name from the day before instead of ours, even though it asked for a date. The kipper was taken away and eventually a plate arrived, my husband was advised that they hadn't bothered to give him a sausage as this would have taken a further 20 minutes, how it takes 40 minutes to cook a sausage is a bit of a mystery.

I had been looking forward to this B&B the most as the website was glowing but I was seriously disappointed. The sitting area was so full of stuff you could hardly move, there was an odd smell in there (but nowhere else) and although there were DVD's piled everywhere there was no TV anywhere to watch them.

Unfortunately the only thing 4 star about Leumadir is the price.

The B & B is well located near the West coast, making it a good location from which to explore the standing stones and points west (also, not so far from Stornaway. On the plus side, the rooms are large, you can have your laundry done, and the breakfasts are good. On the negative side, the walls are very thin, so not a good choice for light sleepers. I could hear the proprietors chatting in the dining room through the bedroom walls, and the guests on the other side kept me awake (you could hear the opening and closing of the cupboards and every word of polite speaking voice conversations). The breakfasts were plentiful and excellent and featured the crofts own eggs and bacon. The timing on the breakfasts were odd. In the days we stayed, it was rare to see guests' breakfasts arrive at the same time or in the order in which guests were seated. I waited for close to 20 minutes one morning as four guests who had arrived after me were served one at a time. This is a working croft, so bear in mind there may be animal notices and odors, although neither was an issue after the first day. After staying in Lewis, I moved to a lovely, quiet, well appointed hotel/B &B in Harris which has a Michelin mentioned kitchen, a rising star chef and is 10 pounds a night less...

We enjoyed our stay at the Leumadair Guesthouse. Our room was quite large by B&B standards and included a sitting area. Also provided were an electric kettle, teas and coffee, and packaged shortbread cookies. The en-suite bathroom was a good size too and included a heated towel rack - you'll find a hair dryer in the bureau drawer. Wi-fi was good, but there's no TV. We were in a room at the back of the building and although we couldn't see the Stones from our room, we did have a peaceful view of sheep grazing in the field. There is a large lounge area with comfortable chairs and lots of reading materials and information on the area. For the most info, talk to Don - he's a wealth of information and stories about the area. Breakfast is served family style at a large table in a room off the lounge. Start with mueslix and add from a wide selection of fresh fruits, nuts, and grains. The bacon and sausages were delicious and you can have your eggs prepared any way you like, including an omelet. Fruit and yogurt are in the fridge, along with juices.
You could walk to the stones, but it's a bit of a hike. Better to drive - turn left out of the driveway and take another left on a road just a few hundred feet down. It wraps around behind the guest house and ends in a parking lot.
It's easy to miss Leumadair Guest House on your first try. As you approach from the east, go past the turn for the Callanish Stones Visitor Center and go about 1/3 mile. The Guesthouse is on your left, marked with a blue sign facing the road, just opposite an electrical substation on the right. There's plenty of off-street parking.

We had a little difficulty finding this place as it is not as it looks on their advert. It has borne the brunt of a hard winter and it looks like it. It is a working croft and it looks like it. After a while you get used to this and come to enjoy the place.
Our room was a decent size and was clean and comfortable. No TV or DVD player
Well located for the Callanish Stones - a 10 minute walk away
Breakfast was excellent
Don was very friendly and helpul

Stayed at Leumadir for 2 nights at the start of our holiday in the Outer Hebrides. Don is very friendly and helpful, advising us where to visit and sharing his local knowledge with us. He helped 'make' our time on Lewis. Room was very clean and comfortable. Breakfast excellent. Brilliant start to a great holiday.

Ideal for anyone visiting the Callanish stones, within sight and easy walk.
On arrival, fist impression not great, but big , comfortable, quiet room with good facilities.
One pot supper at £10 was ideal and good breakfast.
Proprietor very knowledgable about local things
