Potters Hotel & Brewery

Reviewed June 11, 2014 via mobile

After a shock cancellation of our reservation in the Hunter at the beginning of a busy long weekend, we managed (with help from the owner of a local motel which I have reviewed) to get a night at Potters Brewery.
The room was tidy, spacious, well maintained and situated away from the brewery which was lucky given that it must be a favourite drinking hole for the locals, so at night the place was busy and a tad noisy (it was Karaoke night). Customer service was good and welcoming. We had Wi-Fi access but I remember my old 56k dial up service being quicker. The rooms must have thin walls because I'm sure I heard someone snoring in the adjoining room ...
Dinner was reasonably priced and served quickly at the brewery / pub given the number of customers but it was average quality. The beer wasn't too bad.
If you're looking for a comfortable place to stay which has an active night life then Potters is one place to consider. Bear in mind that Potters caters for functions so wedding receptions and the like will result in a loud late evening.

We appreciate you taking the time to review our resort and the facilities in which we provide and we thank you for advising other travellers of your stay. We do provide two types of WIFI to our in-house guests. One is a generic free hotspot wifi and another which is password protected and is utilised for our paying overnight guests only. Both of these are provided to you by our friendly reservations staff at the front counter when you check in. I apologise if you experienced a slow connection, I would suggest next time you stay with us you take advantage of our accommodation only in house wifi which is at a higher speed for connection. DJ and Karaoke are in the main bar every Saturday night from 9pm, however, we are located on 11 acres and our rooms are at the back of the resort. We rarely get complaints regarding the noise from the hotel. With that being said I sincerely apologise if our patrons have been disruptive to your stay in any way. We hope it does not hinder on your decision to stay with us in the future. We look forward to welcoming you back next time you decide to stay with us at Potters Hotel Brewery Resort.

Was fascinated by the brick kilns outside, that's what drew us in in the first instance. Tried the selection of beers, and found some really good ones, can recommend the 8% IPA (just don't try driving afterwards!). Traditional style Aussie pub and grub but very good value, plus plenty of room for kids to run off steam outside in a safe environment.

Thank you for providing details on your experience with us at Potters Hotel Brewery Resort. The Brickwork Kilns really are a fantastic display of Hunter Valley history and located right on our site. They are a constant talking piece for travellers in the area. Our award winning beers are getting some great reviews at the moment and we are very proud of the variety we supply. We look forward to welcoming you back next time you’re in the Hunter Valley.

This a very central place for the Wine circuit, close to Cessnock shops and a short drive to Maitland. We spent New Year here and although the entertainment for the night was cancelled and the hotel shut at 10pm it was still a lovely spot to stay at. Rooms were cleaned daily, staff were wonderful, food was so-so but the brewery tour was awesome.

This is our second stay at Potters. This time we tried the King Room, hoping for a more comfortable stay After our previous stay we requested a non connecting room, so imagine our surprise on arrival to find that we had been given a connecting room, this time with a double door.

My husband called reception immediately and was advised that there were no more rooms available and should we find the room noisy then perhaps we could be moved the next day. Room 22 was vacant but was out of order??? The couple we travelled with also found that they had a connecting room and also no where to park as others had parked in their space, they to contacted reception and was moved to another room. We had advised them not to book at connecting room.

Room 23 is large, but furnishings are dirty, stain remover would not go astray. The bathroom is spacious and clean, however is poorly planned. The window is within the bath/shower and has been impacted by water. The shower is above the bath and is not positioned high enough for any one 6ft or taller, also the width also makes it difficult for those with broad shoulders, sideways showering.

Dinner was booked for the brasserie, we arrived and were seated and order placed. The service was fast, too fast. Starter and entree arrived together. Main meal arrived 10 minutes later, needless to say a lot of food was wasted. When we were asked if the meal was okay due to the amount of food left on the plate, comment was made to waitress that the meals arrived to quickly. We were advised that a party of 75 were about to arrive and chef needed to get our meals out quickly so that he had time for theirs. Not good enough, dinner was $105 for two people and $50 of that could not be eaten. On our previous stay dinner was lovely with no pressure to finish quickly.

The spa was cold and only 4 jets worked on one side, so no relaxing there. The grounds are well kept and it is close to Broke Road and all the vineyards. If you are on a tight budget then this is a good place to stay. However, if you need a soft comfortable bed and fluffy pillows then look elsewhere.

Staff at the resort on both occasions have been great. Billie Jo and the guys at the Brewery Tour are fantastic.

Room Tip: Speak to reception when booking and make sure you do not get a interconnecting room. Potters can be...

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your much valued feedback. We do strive to exceed our guest’s expectations and I apologise on this occasion that was not the case. As advised at time of booking we are unable to guarantee room requests. We do try our best however, It is subject to availability. Our interconnecting rooms all have double doors that have been professionally sealed. Rarely do we encounter issues of this nature and I apologise we were unable to fulfil your request on the day. The guests you were travelling with were able to secure the last available room on that particular evening hence the advice regarding relocation in the morning. Potters attracts many tourists to the region on weekends and unfortunately there was no further opportunity to room move. Room 22 was out of order last weekend as the rear door was damaged from previous guests. We have taken your other comments on board and will utilise them to make positive improvements to how we service our patrons. We hope this experience does not hinder on any further visits to our Resort as we hope to see you again sometime in the future.

Thank you for taking the time to advise other travellers of your stay with us. We enjoy reading reviews on guests enjoying their stay and utilising our facilities. By sauna i assume you mean our spa. It is outdoor and heated and used regularly by guests who stay with us. We hope to see you again next time you are in the Hunter Valley.

Stayed at Potters with friends to go to Lovedale Long Lunch. Was a bit apprehensive when I booked as it was the only place left as Lovedale weekend gets booked out way ahead. It is a great location as the shuttle buses go from there and it is easy to get to all the wineries and nobody has to drive! We had dinner on the Saturday night which was great and did karaoke which was really funny! I think it is an excellent place to stay as the food was good and the staff were friendly. Will be booking there again next year.

From the time the receptionist took our booking so professionally we thought we were in for a good break however as things progressed things deteriorated. Firstly arriving at night we found it difficult to find reception as there was no illuminated sign. Then we found it difficult to find our unit as the unit numbers were impossible to read at night. Then the TV didn't work and the loo flushed continuously. Don't worry says the receptionist we'll change to another unit which she did but a bore to have to do it. Next morning we tried to find the breakfast Brasserie but no signs over the entrance and so we wandered round looking until we finally found it. All small irritations but they amounted to us not wanting to return. A pity as with attention to detail it could be good

Hi Nigel, thank you for taking the time to review our resort. It is with feedback such as yours we are able to make positive improvements to the products and services we provide. I take on board your comments regarding signage. We do however have full details including location of our facilities in our welcome brochure provided at check in. It is also highlighted in the in house compendium in each of our rooms. We have large digitally printed signs on lovely masonry blocks providing our guests with directions throughout the resort. We apologise for the issues and inconvenience relating to your room. Issues raised were promptly rectified shortly after your relocation. We would love to welcome you back next time you consider staying in the Hunter Valley. It is important for us that we exceed our guest’s expectations and would love the opportunity to prove we have the ability to do just that.
