“Not bad but overpriced for what you get”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 7, 2013

This place is pretty good but overpriced. The place itselft has a historic setting but the logistics are weird. There's not a lot of privacy. I was also woken by a barking dog at 4 in the morning which should have been taken care of before hand.

On the plus side the breakfast was pretty good.

Staying here was an opportunity to step back and live in history. The house is filled with the artifacts and possessions relating to a bye gone era, yet still manages to provide hot water, strong showers and access to a kitchen for the modern necessities of 2012 living. The house is situated on a hill so arrange to have your breakfast in the stand alone mirador that is in the garden for a spectacular morning view. Not too far - albeit up hill - gets you to the town square where restaurants, bars and entertainment are readily available. Take advantage of the house managers. Orphelia will help with all things food - she even made us an evening meal around the trout we had caught that day. Her husband Oscar, was a mine of knowledge and organised us an excellent, good value trip to Cocora Valle and all things Salento. The accommodation is spotlessly clean and when we stayed included two rooms - one with a double bed, the other with two single beds with a connecting wardrobe area between them. All as per the original house layout. Our only criticism would be that there was no Internet but there is a cafe one minute down the road. Not having internet was a small price to pay for being able to enjoy living in history for a few days.

My girlfriend and I stayed at La Casa Alto del Coronel in Salento, Colombia February 14th-February 18th, 2011.

La Casa sits atop a hill with an excellent view of the small town of Salento, Colombia. The accommodations were quite exceptional, and more than we expected. Our suite included double beds, a sitting room, and a private bath with 24-7 hot water (something that similar B & B's or hostels do not provide).

The inn keepers, Oscar and Orfelia, were extremely kind and helpful. Oscar arranged for private, secure pickup from the airport (a 45 minute drive from Periera airport), and also for a couple of our day trips to coffee plantations in the surrounding areas. He always made himself available to answer our questions, and because he and Orfelia live on site, we felt much safer (not that we ever had anything to worry about- Salento is far more safer than most American cities).

Orfelia's breakfasts, cooked from scratch every morning, were beyond delicious. Whether it was her homemade eggs ranchero, baked breads, or freshly suqeezed juice, we were never hungry when we started our day.

I would go back to La Casa Alto del Coronel, and I highly recommend it to anyone.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
This old house was initially a rural dwelling. For this reason it is surrounded by wide corridors that allow to contemplate, constantly, the peaceful landscape of its mountains, or the land, with its orchards and fruit trees. Then it was rebuilt and converted into a hotel, without letting it lose the characteristics that over time have credited it as a patrimonial dwelling of the Municipality. Being located in a peripheral street of the municipality, the hotel house "Alto del Coronel" benefits from the tranquility and the mountainous landscape of its surroundings. To satisfy some complementary and recreational demands, it also counts on this town of great environmental, historical and cultural merits. The hotel house has 2 independent housing units (2 suites, 4 rooms), 2 independent dining rooms, a common living room, a separate viewpoint of the house, equipped with comfortable hammocks; (Collections of music (boleros, ballads, classical, tropical Cuban, Brazilian, etc.), a collection of Life magazines in Spanish, books to enjoy reading moments (about our region, and The possibilities of enjoying in full a people whose identity and culture have not been altered, despite the renewing impetus of modernity and tourism. This semi-natural way of life allows guests to ride around the town or participate in horseback riding Which go to nearby natural sites, such as the Cocora Valley, starting from the hotel itself. ... more   less
