“Cosy characterful house by the sea”

Five of us between 16 and 74, a dog - and two Christmas guests - spent ten days here over Christmas and New Year. We arrived to find a festive hamper and some lovely decorations giving the house a homely feel. The location is very special, with diverse walks to harbour, beach and cliffs all very close at hand - we enjoyed the wild weather very much, watched the surfers on new year's day and found the villagers very friendly. The house itself has nice, spacious proportions - it was easy to get warm and feel comfortable, store food in the big Smeg and cook to the scale of Christmas dinner. Not the right time of year for using the garden but I think it would be a great place to stay in summer. I especially liked going out at night to listen to the sea and look at the profusion of stars. Although a small village there is a visitor's centre, a lighthouse walk, the coastal path, cafes and a wide beach with huts just ten minutes away, where diving and surfing are popular. All my contact with the owner was friendly and accomodating and we would definitely stay at Brierydean again.

“Lovely quiet spot just off the coastal path”
Reviewed September 4, 2013 for a stay in July 2013

Went with our 2 teenage sons. We really enjoyed the peace and quiet - only noise was the seagulls! Wifi connection was really good. The house was really well stocked with books, tourist info, DVDs, board games, all kinds of beach equipment etc. and many other essentials were supplied or left by previous renters - coffee, tea, sugar, oil, loo roll, washing up liquid, dishcloths, pegs, washing powder etc. Plenty of towels as well. The 2 upstairs bedrooms are a good size compared to some places we've stayed but the downstairs room was smaller. Bathroom being downstairs might not suit some people and there was problem with the plumbing which meant the shower came on and made a lot of noise whenever the toilet was flushed. The oven was very dirty. The fridge/freezer was actually a fridge with an icebox, so not good for frozen food and the clothes dryer wasn't a tumble dryer but a heated rack. Being by the sea it was a bit damp so we had the heating on quite a bit to dry things out. The beach is a short walk away and the location is really convenient for lovely walks along the coastal path. Edinburgh is about a 50 minute drive. So, all in all I would recommend it and go back again.

Many thanks for your helpful review. We are glad you enjoyed the peace and tranquility of St Abbs , it is such a special place.

So pleased you appreciated all the extras we like to provide guests to ensure their stay is as comfortable as possible. It's our home from home too!
Our cleaners pride themselves on providing a good cleaning service. What a pity the oven wasn't to standard on this occasion.Quick changeovers in high season can present challenges but this is unacceptable and we would have resolved this without question if we had been notified .

A change in the water pressure seems to have caused some plumbing noise . The pressure has now been reduced. I do hope it wasn't overly disturbing.

Future guests will pleased to note a new fridge freezer and a washer /dryer are now planned !

“Quite spacious and quite well equipped cottage in good location”
Reviewed July 12, 2013 for a stay in July 2013

Good access guidelines, confused by wifi and shower but quickly assisted by the owner. The conservatory and back yard add useful entertaining spaces. Stereo, TV and wifi all good. Could have benefitted from block-out blinds in kids room as it was midsummer and light til very late. Also a dishwasher would be welcome. Neighbours were pleasant, every need can be found close to hand in Coldingham or maybe the occasional trip to Eyemouth for groceries. Would recommend it to anyone looking for a restful time on a beautiful part of the coast, also easy access to Edinburgh, the Borders and Northumberland.

“Lovely Stuff”
Reviewed April 12, 2013 for a stay in April 2013

We booked a short stay here on the recommendation of a family member. I know the borders very well as my family live in the area so thought it'd be nice to go for a visit with the kids. This cottage is situated in a lovely fishing village. The surroundings where so peaceful and the local community very friendly. We had a great time with our kids aged 3 and 1. You require a car to get anywhere so spent the days out in places like Dunbar (east links family park is only 35min drive away and is excellent!). The cottage was cosy and welcoming and supplied with everything a young family could need. If we get chance again we will defiantly go back! This place would also be ideal for a couple wanting to get away for a quiet break. I can't express how peaceful and beautiful the location is!!!

“1 Brierydean, St Abbs - fantastic”

I know St Abbs very well as me and my family visited every year when I was a child. I brought my two children to St Abbs for a week and I must say we thought Brierydean was a lovely house to stay in. It was clean and tidy, very spacious, and my son was in his element with the PS2 when the weather was bad.

There were lots of divers going out as well as fishermen - the harbour cafe is a must, very good value and good local food. I thoroughly enjoyed the Cullen Skink.

Being able to park the car and walk to the harbour or to the beach was great - and with hardly any through traffic I felt very relaxed allowing my children to go out by themselves - particularly to the local post office where the lady was very friendly.

Excellent all round value and we will defintely go again.

Thank you! That's great your family enjoyed their stay. We try to provide comfortable accommodation that our own family, and our guests, enjoy staying in and we are so glad we have achieved this.

St Abbs is a special place and I hope your children have lovely memories of their time here, just as you have.

Welcome back any time!
