“Totally Awesome!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 14, 2013

I was fortunate enough to stay at the cutest hotel in Ayampe - Xanadu!
What I found there was a beautiful, hospitable and super friendly refuge from all the stresses of our fast-paced world.
The owner, Gerry Lakas is extremely helpful, fun and full of wit and wisdom and his associate Chilli is very attentive to the needs of her guests.
The food at Xanadu is five-star and the overall ambiance is unequalled in the area.
The room itself was very comfortable and the common areas are cozy and inviting.
The best treat of all however was the music!
Gerry is an amazing guitar player and he welcomes guests to join in on jam nights.
If you are lucky enough to go to Ayampe, Ecuador....this is the only place to stay!

Was recommended Xanadu by a friend who lives in Ayampe and couldn't have been more grateful. Stayed for 4 or so days while the surf was flat at Lobitos (Peru) for a change of scenery. After several weeks in the Peruvian desert, the lush surroundings of Ayampe were a real treat. The Xanadu house is a lovely wooden affair, carefully handcrafted by the owner Gerry - whos attention to detail and passion really gives the place a great vibe. The balcony on the 2nd floor overlooks a carpet of green trees and further the ocean, you can get a good impression of whether there'll be waves or not. There are a few boards in the hotel the guests can borrow (couple of shortboards, minimal and a foam board).

If you play guitar, you're in a for a real treat because Gerry is a fine player and relishes an evening jam with whoever is around. He has a couple of guitars guests can play (just back off from the vintage strat!) and a PA to broadcast the jam to whoever might be in the lounge. My fingers were shredded after back to back nights of playing - decided to take a quick lesson on the slide with Gerry, who also offers up his guitar wisdom for an hour for a small fee. He told me his has a smorgasbord of musical items arriving shortly in a container.

Inbetween your surf and the evenings music, my friend and I took the opportunity to practice yoga with Chili. For an hour you can stretch and wobble your way to a state of relaxation entirely appropriate with the environment. Chili is a great teacher and very kind.

Food. I couldn't get enough of the coconut shrimp/fish on offer, fresh from the sea cooked in a delightful creamy coconut sauce with rice. The peanut equivalent was equally delicious. Also on the menu were sandwiches of impressive dimensions. The bread is made in Puerto Lopez, we accompanied Gerry on a trip (he goes most days and was more than happy for us to come along) as he dropped off cheese, olives, onion (to be mixed in the dough) to a local panaderia and picked up a stack of 'custom' xanadu baguettes the following day. Gerry was even kind enough to drive us around to a couple of particularly scenic spots on the way back.

Rooms were in the same handcrafted wooden feel, and after a few weeks in a dusty dorm room without running water it was very nice. Hot water! A precious commodity.

Come here!
Phil

This place is awesome.
Location wise it's a short walk to the beach you can see the surf from the balcony.
We planned to stay for 2 nights and ended up staying over a week.
It felt like home, in the end was very hard to say goodbye.
Rooms are great, all the linen is new, fresh towels get left in the main area to use whenever, the gardens are just starting to become established and are very relaxing. All rooms have there own bathrooms, great hot water, all timber rooms, small paints are left on the balconies to design your own painted rocks to leave in the garden ahhhh it truly is a relaxing easy place to stay.
The best is Gerry and the crew, we got taken to remote beaches up the coast, put in special orders for food, the food is great here as well, on quite nights the guys set up a projector for movies etc etc
We loved our time here.
Perfect retreat to relax and unwind.

It's not only about the very enchanting stuff but also about the love for DETAIL that will make you feel so welcome and comfortable. I really enjoyed being well looked after. Nothing was impossible, Chilli (I hope that is how you spell her name) and the rest of the stuff made it all happen. Delicios food at night, surfboards to rent, decent hot showers (finally in Ecuador!), beautiful gardens, live music(!) stones to paint, relaxing hour in a whirlpool....You'll fall asleep listening to the waves and you'll wake up with the same sound. While you are sitting outside painting stones, Gatoman (a brave cat) will visit you if you are lucky. The surf is great but also a walk through that small Ecuadorian village gives you so much peace. I can go on about it! Find out yourself! Highly recommanded. There is also a possibility to stay for free if you are a nurse or a doctor. Gerry is always looking for professional help to keep up health of the community. ENJOY!

We went for a long weekend and wish we could have stayed longer. It was a hidden jewel for sure! I slept like a baby and everything we needed was within walking distance. All of the staff were very friendly and accommodating. I will definitely be back for another visit!

Room Tip: I stayed on the bottom floor in the middle room with a view of and easy access to the pool. I enjoy...
