This resort has a good reputation in the area and is very good value for money. The rooms I occupied were in good condition, and the housekeepers always cleaned them very well. The air-con units were very good, and the showers had 'hot' water (which is not always the case in Baguio for example).

The restaurant food is really good, and reasonably priced. All the staff (including those in the office, in the restaurant, the housekeepers and the security guards) are very friendly and always helpful, which lends to a relaxed atmosphere.

However, there are two negatives...

Firstly, as the restaurant is an open area, it can get very hot, and the electric fans sometimes don't have much of an effect. Mosquitoes can also be a big problem in the restaurant. Also, the restaurant is sometimes booked out for special functions, leaving the paying live-in guests with nowhere to sit and eat. Very annoying !

Secondly, the management seem to tolerate very noisy parties close to occupied rooms. On one occassion I had an extremely loud 13 hour Videoke party right next to my room from 9am to 10:30pm, which meant my room was not usable. On another occasion, there was a noisy party outside my room until 2:30am. On both occasions sleeping or resting was impossible. The management didn't seem to care about the noise levels or comfort of the live-in guests, which was extremely frustrating and unfair. Very very annoying !!

So beware ... There are periods at Coconut Grove when your stay can be adversely affected by very noisy parties, and you just cannot get sleep or rest.

Just returned from a fantastic stay at Coconut Grove. Sure, by Western standards the rooms are very basic and the walls are a bit thin, but they are extremely clean, and when you consider price (about the best in the area), its pretty much unbeatable. Food is good and very reasonably priced. The aircon units work great and are quiet. The pool, facilities and grounds are extremely well kept, the staff are all super friendly and the place has an atmosphere about it that makes for a great stay.

I will definitely be back to the area and will stay at Coconut Grove again for sure!

The pool looks big in the pictures, but when it's right in front of you, it's not that big after all. the room was reasonable but I had a hard time locking and opening the door. The doors for their standard rooms are sliding doors which makes it so hard to open and close. Every Saturday is ballroom night. I went there on a Saturday which made my stay bad. The music was so loud i couldn't sleep. The people who were dancing were old ladies " MATRONAS" with their dance partners. it lasted until 12 midnight. if you are looking for peace, calmness and solitude, this is NOT the place. the beach was rocky. there was no shore actually, i needed to balance myself in order to reach the beach because of the rocky shore. the food was great most especially the tacos and fish fillet. DON'T order fruit salad. it's just assorted salad in a plate.

Room Tip: go for deluxe

Staff takes some time to respond to sms inquiries, soft booked several weeks ahead, when we contacted them again to reserve rooms, there was no soft-booking noted on their log book, it's a good thing there were still available family rooms on the days we needed. The pool was clean & heated, our 3 yr old niece enjoyed wading in the shallow part (4 ft) while the adults in the group swam in the deeper end (6ft).The beach area is covered in cement so there was no sandy shore to walk in when the tide was high. The fishing boats moored on the beach also discouraged any activities on the sand.Kids can't build sand castles here. The waves could get rough. No marine flora nearby so we did'nt get to use our snorkeling gear.Family cabanas are spacious and clean, bathrooms have hot showers, though mosquitoes bit us even in the ac rooms. They don't allow cooking but the restaurant serves reasonable priced dishes with generous servings. A family of 8 adults and 1 child can run up to 1.5-2k in food bill per meal.Room rates were less than 3k php for an overnight stay for 4 adults. No noisy karaoke singing, which is a plus.A regatta was about to be held that week so if you're into this sport, then you'll enjoy watching the race. The amenities were okay at the rates they were offering but if you really want to enjoy a resort with nice long stretches of sand, and maybe do some snorkeling, The Coconut Grove in Baunang, La Union won't be in the top 10 of my list.

Coconut Grove, Bauang, La Union, Philippines

My wife, daughter and I visited Bauang, La Union as an over-night stop-over on our way to Baguio in October 2010. We wanted to stay on the beach rather than stay in San Fernando; which we later found to be a very dark city ... not street lighting!

So we checked each of the beach resorts, all of which seemed rather run-down and even checked the Oasis Country Club and Hotel Ariana, both of which were excessively expensive.

We found Coconut Grove to be a nice, well maintained family resort, with a good-sized swimming pool, friendly staff and right on the beach.

Good value for money, especially compared to the other resorts and hotels in the area.Try a banana split!

We happen to stay here based upon the recommendation of a local lady we met on a bus. We stayed for 3 days and enjoyed the staff, food, location, scenery, etc.

We stayed in a standard unit that was comfortable and had a good view of the ocean. If you decide to stay here I would recommend checking the rooms and maybe up grading to the little circular units. We kept the standard unit because we had an upper corner location that had a great view.

We had a free WiFi set-up but my converter didn't work correctly. The staff loaned us a charger on a couple occasions which really helped us for planning our travels via the internet. I thought the staff was friendly, helpful, and they made our stay very enjoyable.

I took the fishing boat trip for about $18 US, which lasted about 3 hours. I was disappointed we didn't catch anything. I felt the local area was pretty much fished out, but the experience was fun never the less.

There is an internet cafe about two blocks away and the price is cheap even by local standards. You can also catch a ride to San Fernando and they have a nice open air market with sea food, fruit and veggies, plus other good shopping.

We enjoyed the pool and the combination restaurant and dance hall. This was a nice place to have breakfast while looking out over the ocean, and in the afternoon to have a drink. The staff is attentive without being smothering.

The afternoons always had a thunder shower with lighting and thunder. We enjoyed the coolness after cooking in the hot heat most of the day.

In conclusion, we have high praise for the staff, the lodging is good by local standards, the food was always enjoyable, and the locals told us that this place was the best deal on the coast. We were happy with our stay even though there was not a lot of places to see or things to do. Its laid back, warm and friendly. I think I read where it is owned by some Australians and they are gradually improving it each year as money becomes available.
