“Brilliant Place to Stay on Way to Kgalagadi or Anytime”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 13, 2013 via mobile

Peaceful, clean, and superb service. I puzzled where to overnight on my way from O. R. Tambo to Kgalagadi. At seven hours from the airport, you don't want to travel any further on your first day. Owing to road works, slow lorries and farm vehicles, and narrow roads, the drive cannot be rushed. Red Sands was an oasis to me. The staff could not have been warmer or more helpful. Dinner and breakfast was excellent. I will stay here again when returning from Kgalagadi.

The bathroom smelt of damp from the shower cubicle. Water in the kettle had attracted ants which is a common problem in any dry area. Accommdation was ok for this level. But the food at the Buffet with traditional South African fare was excellent with lots available. Breakfast was good with luck running with us as a large group came in just after we sat down. Service was quick and done with a smile. Unfortuately the wine we chose had not been stored correctly and was not very nice. This was the second bottle as the manager himself rejected the first one opened. Well worth a visit because it is on the edge of the Khalahari and is central to the areas attractions. The restaurant staff were very helpful and tried very hard with out being intrusive.

I was in Kuruman & Katho last week for work & got to stay in the beautiful Red Sands Country Lodge. I was pleasantly surprised. The premises are gorgeous & when you walk in by reception you are greeted by the friendliest staff. They have different types of rooms, from camping to self catering to non catering. The rooms are so comfortable & the view from the balcony was breath taking. The food at the restaurant was so delicious. I did not have one meal that was not cooked to perfection. The meat was so soft & tender. The atmosphere was one of peace & tranquility. I would recommend anyone who travels that way, to make Red Sands their stop.

Only ever having seen the red sands of the Kalahari in photos or on TV, I imagined them to be a Photoshop trick, or maybe the way the sunlight plays across the land at sunset. To see that sand, hold it in your hand... it's having a million years of Africa in your hand. Hold it up to your ears, and you can hear the stomping feet and high-pitched virgin voices of a thousand Khoisan ceremonies.
About 15km's west of Kuruman lies Red Sands Country Lodge, quietly amongst the cabbage trees, surrounded by low hills. It's a 3 star establishment, so don't expect 5star amenities, but friendliness is definitely 5 star. Chalets are basic. We had a self-catering chalet- small kitchen with 2 plate stove, fridge, crockery and cutlery. There's a shower room with loo and basin. The room itself is open plan, with double bed, single bed and small lounge area. We are a family of 4, and they were happy for us to bring a camp bed for the 2 nights. Rooms are clean, and basic, but have everything you'll need for a few nights, including aircon which is a necessity in the hot summer months. There is a camping area- each site has its own electricity and BBQ area, and the ablution block is clean. There is a small splash pool (look out for water scorpions), a restaurant and conference/ ballroom. Food in the restaurant is either buffet or a la carte, depending on the night. Both are excellent. The buffet is small, the food more traditional South African Afrikaans, but well prepared and tasty. Try the steaks! The menu is not small, but not too big that it takes 3hours to read, but still difficult to make a choice. Either way, food is delicious and well prepared. The wine list is quite small, but lovely- giving a good range of choices of yummy South African wines. Breakfast is served in the sunny main reception area. It’s a buffet of cereals, yoghurts and canned fruits. Hot food (eggs, bacon etc.) are made on order. Be prepared to share your cereal with the birds. It seems that the lodge is used by many as a stopover between Gauteng and the Northern Cape coastal areas, or before they venture deeper into the Kalahari; so most only stay a night or 2. Pricing is reasonable for what you get...
TO DO:
At: hiking and a game drive, swimming pool.
In The Area: The Eye of Kuruman: fenced in and charges admission. It relatively clean, but shows signs of neglect
Moffatt Museum: The day we visited, was a public holiday, so it was closed, but there seemed to be renovations on the go as well.
Sishen Iron Ore mines, Wondercave, Bird Sanctuary.
If you're in the area between July and November, you'll be able to enjoy the beauty of the Namaqualand flowers in bloom.
Bird lovers will enjoy the many birds flying and hopping around- I’m not a bird watcher, so I don’t know the difference between a sparrow and a weaver, but I do enjoy watching them fly and sing.
Overall, the Lodge is a good stopover place to stay. I must add- it was the only place which actually answered my email enquiries, so it was the main reason we stayed there, but we’re not sorry.
