Casa John
Reviewed August 7, 2013

We were in a group of 12 adults and 4 children (4-10yrs) sharing three of the six cottages. The cottages were very spacious and comfortable to live in. They were well equiped, although 2 kettles and 2 toasters broke during the visit. Some parts of the cottages had seen better days and needed fixing such as the toilet and door locks. We opted to employ a cleaner which meant we had more time to enjoy the holiday. There were plenty of things to keep both adults and children occupied within walking distance. Activities included whale/dolphin watching from the verander of the cottages, star gazing at night, purchasing locally caught crayfish from the locals who walked by the cottages every day, rock pool hunting, playing on the sandy beach, watching the colourful butterflies and birds. One of the cottages even had its own resident tortoise!!! Further out (10minutes in the car) Casa Barry offered another sandy beach with various water activities. These included diving/snorkling trips, surfing and a water safari. It also a daily market for those that enjoy bartering for the odd bargain. We visited the Casa Barry Beach Lodge and Tofo Tofo restaurants which both provided a large choice of tasty food at very reasonable prices. Note the service can be very slow so buy two beers at a time!!!
Overall a very relaxing holiday.

Casa John is a soothing venue for the eyes and soul, it is well positioned on a site that overlooks the dunes in front of it out as far as the eye can see over deep azure ocean. Situated just outside the main Tofo on the beach or bay of Tofinho (Literally little Tofo) all about 20min drive from Inhambane that has direct flights to and from Oliver Tambo International. .

The cluster of 2 & 3 bed Casa's or cabins surround a fresh water pool that is cool and inviting. Days can be spent on your casa veranda relaxing in a swing chair that is placed outside each of the lounges while watching the daily Whale shark visit in the breakers. (In season)

The units also have a section at the back or in a court yard setup that allow for wind free BBQ'ing The kitchens are well stocked with all utentsils and the rooms and living areas are very adequatly furnished.

Domingo can be a bit gruff, but put that aside and he is very helpfull and sorts out any need you may have. A pleasant extra is that on the day of departure you will find one of his team washing down your car and smiling faces as you drive off. (Eiether happy to see you go or out of genuine gratitude!) Make an effort and hand out some gratuity for this.

Casa john is one of the best places I have ever stayed. Beautiful location, nice, comfortable and well equipped house, breathtaking views from balcony, a swimming pool overlooking the beach and a very friendly and approachable staff. The USP is Tofinho beach which pretty quite and serene so you can simply relax and enjoy the nature and just 2 km away from Tofo beach where you can do all the water activities and at the same time avoid the hustle bustle of it. It's a real value for money place and we just couldn't ask for more. We simply loved it ...

Room Tip: We stayed in 2 houses. First house no. 6 Which has 2 bedrooms which were comfortable and were equal...

We (couple with two small kids) enjoyed the view and the good style of the apartment as well as the swimming pool. It was low season, but it was possible to get fair service. We appreciated the style, but were a bit irritated that the prices were only given in Rand, asked information of the owner on it. Don`t do that, he is presented himself as an old-school hateman, who came shouting into our apartment without having ever met us before.
We had never met aggression and a bad spirit like this, lots of shouting and insults in front of little kids for no reason, sent out during dinner.
If you give some value for sustainable tourism development in a very poor area, this is not your place. If you want to make a backward South-African boss richer, go for it!

This was my second visit to Casa John since 2005. Everything was just as beautiful as I remembered it. Well furnished and well equipped units that are cleaned on a daily basis. Even our car got washed the day before departure. The whole complex and swimming pool are well kept by the friendly staff. Maria and Andries even helped us clean our fresh fish and coconuts that we have bought at the market. Casa John blends in with the environment and has gorgeous sea views. We spent alot of time watching whales from the verandah. We look forward to our next visit to Casa John.
