Baja Dark Skies Inn is the most romantic place to say in the Sierra San Pedro Mártir in Baja California. The Sierra San Pedro Mártir are the highest mountains on the peninsula, with lovely summers and cold winters. Mexico's national observatory is on the highest peaks of the Sierra because some of the world's best seeing conditions are found there (dark skies and smooth winds).
The Inn is about half-way up the road to the mountains, about 4 hours south of the border by car. At the inn you will find one small bedroom in the house, and a 2-bedroom cabin with kitchenette. There is also extensive camping with a large grill available to guests. Your hosts are a lovely couple, Michael and Pamela, and the food is fantastic. (Breakfast is included, dinner is available).
One of the unique parts of the visit is an offer to view the night sky through one of the two telescopes. We had a strong moon when we were there, so we got great views of that, but the stars were washed out in the glare. We want to go back on a moonless night to really see the skies.
One piece of advice, you get to the inn via a standard "Baja" dirt road. It is passable by a high clearance 2WD vehicle (which we had), but if you are not familiar with driving in Baja, be sure to get 4 wheel drive.
What to do when you are there? You can sit in front of the fire and read. Take a walk up to the old abandoned settlement on the property. Drive up to the park and visit the observatory or walk in the woods. Arrange to take a horse ride on the nearby Meling Ranch. The birding and botanizing are fantastic, and the absolute quiet, solitude, and dark skies at night will refresh your soul.
