The Flycatcher Inn B&B Boutique Hotel Uxmal
Ranked #2 of 2 Santa Elena B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence

The Flycatcher staff welcomed us with open arms and open hearts. My wife and I truly had the sense that we were staying in someone's home. We were there for three weeks in February, and spent many wonderful days getting to know St. Elena and the surrounding area. Santiago was our superb guide on four, one-day excursions to Puuc ruins, cenotes, and nearby towns. Because he is from the area we learned about the culture and unrecorded history as we drove from place to place. Even if you arrive by car I recommend going on trips with Santiago. Kristine is a great sounding board for potential trips and her recently published book, Adventures in the Yucatan, gives a Northerner a sense of what it was like to start all over in a foreign country. Rosa, Nidia and the rest of the staff couldn't do enough for us to make our stay better. Great beds ,excellent breakfasts and beautiful grounds. I am probably going to become a bird watcher because of all the birds we saw.

The Flycatcher Inn was just beautiful. The grounds, the rooms, the great hearty breakfasts, the service-everything was perfect. The location to the ruins and other sites was great. Nearby towns, such as Ticul and Mani mad for great day trips. Very interesting and relaxing 3 days. Thanks Santiago and Kristine for the lovely memories.

For those wanting a restful get away from the throbbing hum of Merida, the Flycatcher Inn south of Uxmal is an excellent option! Very clean accommodations, which were also cool thanks to AC and with comfortable bed and excellent shower. We stayed in Hu'u room and enjoyed the bird song and lovely garden. However, what sets this B and B apart from others are Kristine, Santiago, Rosa, and the staff. You could not wish for more gracious, friendly, and helpful folk. The breakfast was delightful and delicious, and the suggested itineraries very helpful.

The town and craft persons of Muna north of Uxmal and the new, exceptional!! Chocolate Museum southeast of Kabah are worth the drive. The countryside surrounding the Museo, Kabah, and other ruins was filled with three species of yellow flowering trees, the roadsides were clean, and the small rolling hills a pleasant relief from the flatlands further north.

On 261 south as you are driving toward Uxmal, do not miss the Hacienda Ochil!!

After a day of travel from Xcalak and a great stop the new Eco Museo del Cocao we arrived tired and hot
at this peaceful paradise. The quiet street, beautiful gardens and smiling Santiago were all just what
we needed. Kristine and Santiago have created a paradise of winding trails through lush jungle, comfortable rooms with AC for hot nights and beautiful gardens. Our room had wonderful windows overlooking a small rock bird bath in lush flowering garden. We enjoyed watching all the birds have their daily bath, right off our small patio. Totally delightful. I would encourage everyone to read the Itineraries Kristine has created on the Flycatcher site. They are excellent and we used them to find the new Chocolate Museum and plan our journey around the Puc Region.

We recently stayed at the Flycatcher for five days, and highly recommend it to couples. Here are a few tips for your stay there:
1. Have a car. This gives you the freedom to have a new adventure every day.
2. Stay for five days or more. We noticed some people staying only a day or two on a "whirlwind tour" of the Yucatan. The Flycatcher is a great place to hunker down and use a base for explorations. Kristine has created five or six full day suggested day tours. You can choose one every morning during your breakfast on the sunny patio.
3. Definitely do the cenote tour. It is a little farther away, but was just amazing. Go on a weekday when not crowded. Descend down a 30 foot ladder to a crystal clear turquoise pool to swim with light filtering down from above. Then move on to the next one. Your own personal driver and horse drawn cart for 250 pesos for a 3-4 hour adventure.
4. Take the time to get to know Kristine, Santiago, and Rosa. They are fountains of information, and are genuinely friendly people. We won't forget them.

Room Tip: It doesn't matter what room you get, they are all nice. String up your hammock.

We got a referral to this lovely inn from our friends at Hotel Julamis in Mérida, and it was a great one. After driving many hours through small villages (ahh, topes - I miss them) coming from the beach town of Xcalak, we arrived in this garden of a spot. Literally. The lush, perfectly maintained gardens are breathtaking, and a great source for birds (saw hummers and a blue-crowned motmot in just a few hours). Kristine and Santiago were the perfect hosts for us; they know plants, birds, food (try her perfect omelet, seriously. No kidding.) and Mayan history. The grounds have walking trails that take you through roads and stones clearly Mayan in origin, and the innkeepers have paid attention to maintaining that history. It means a lot. Our room was lovely and quiet even with morning bird calls. They offer breakfast (see above...) and will do dinners on request, and there are a couple of great local restaurants nearby in Santa Elena. And it's maybe 10 minutes to the fantastic ruins of Uxmal. We can't wait to go back.

The Flycatcher is perfectly situated for a base from which to see all the nearby ruins. Seldom have we found a neater, more colorful, better managed B&B. Pristine, comfortable, excellent breakfast--and moderately priced.

Room Tip: Rooms on the side are more private. No swimming pool.
