I stayed at the Pickled Onion for two nights as part of a longer visit to the Yucatan. These guest houses are in the perfect location for visiting Uxmal and the pyramids of the Puuc Route.

Accomdation is in a Mayan style palapa house with all the comforts of home. My husband and I stayed in "Tzab Kan Nah" (queen bed) and my adult daughter stayed in "Yaax Nah" (two twins). There is plenty of hot water, comfortable beds, cute bathrooms and, if you wish to sleep Mayan-style, hammocks are provided. The grounds are well maintained and attractive. There is also a lovely pool surrounded by flowering plants- the perfect place to spend a hot afternoon in between sightseeing. Everything is kept spotlessly clean.

The breakfast that is included in the price is delicious and served in the restaurant (only steps from the guest houses). We also had lunch and dinner there and enjoyed all the meals. The staff is friendly and helpful and go out of their way to make you feel welcome. Valerie (the owner) is available to answer any questions and make sure you have a great time while you're visiting the area. She has put a lot of hard work into the Pickled Onion, and it really shows.

Also, don't miss out on the chance to buy some delicious honey, which Valerie gets from the local people around Santa Elena. There is also a small selection of locally made hammocks, bags, etc available for purchse.

Highly recommened!

Inexpensive, clean and well kept small inn on the south side of the small town of Sta Elena. It is the first hotel in the area near the highway when coming north on Highway 261. It is about 15 minutes south of Uxmal and a good place from which to base yourself when exploring the area. There are several small cabinas constructed of local materials in a traditional manner, complete with thatched straw roofs. Add to this cement floors and walls, screen windows, running hot and cold water, basic, but comfortable beds and furnishings, a swimming pool, well thought out gardens and meditation areas and an on-site diner with evening meals and where breakfast is served at no charge( to guests) and you have a small paradise. This place has been developed by an ex-pat Canadian who is determined to provide a high quality service without over charging or recreating America in Mexico. She seems to understand the Mexican language both literally and figuratively and does a good job at sharing her knowledge.

Thatched roof adobe casitas lend a Mayan flavour, polished cement floors, with hot showers and wonderful beds and linens. The pool and garden areas are clean, comfortably appointed and relaxing. You might even be treated to an afternoon lightning fly-by from the swallows dipping into the pool surface for a quick drink of water!

The owner, Valerie is an interesting lady, cheerful, helpful and attentive, with a well trained friendly staff. The menu is sufficiently varied and the food good and very tastefully presented.

In fact, you may well be so charmed by the natural ambience of the place you find yourself staying longer than planned.

We loved our stay at the Pickled Onion. Valerie is a lovely, helpful host. The Mayan hut we stayed in was really beautiful and it was definitely the most comfortable bed we'd slept in on the whole Yucatan peninsula. The pool area is great too, lovely to relax by after a day at the ruins.

We visited The Pickled Onion on a recommendation from the excellent Ellyne at Cascadas de Merida. Valerie, the owner of The Pickled Onion met us and showed us our adobe lodgings, with vast bed and rusticall-styled on-suite.

There's a tranquil pool, where the local swallows skim for drinks, but the real drinks come from the terrace. A strong margherita goes down just fine with the thoughtfully flavoured cuisine.

The location of The Pickled Onion is just right (10 mins' drive away) from Uxmal, which means that you can wake refreshed and get to see the impressive ruins before the crowds.
