“Incredible! Go to Asti just for this! / Incroyable! Visitez Asti juste pour cette expérience!”

I visited Tenuto Baldovino with three girlfriends for a celebration birthday lunch. It was the most incredible lunch I have ever eaten, and Carlo, his sister, his father and his mother all made us feel quite welcome, not to mention their brood of lovely puppies who greeted mine like a long-lost brother.

Most of us are experienced at wine tasting, and we agreed that we had never attended a tasting where we liked ALL of the wines presented. We did like all of the wines at Baldovino. The food that accompanied our lunch was delicious - you have not lived till you taste rubbiola cheese drizzled with honey - and was served in a wonderful tasting room that uses re-purposed crates for the bar and features a long wood table, wood-burning fire, and warmly-coloured walls (using a wine-infused colourant, a unique decorating technique). Carlo speaks Italian, English and French (at least).

After lunch - and I must admit, a bit of a buying spree - we went touring about the countryside, ably guided by Carlo, visiting the vines and the wine cave, among other locations. In brief, it was not so much a lunch as an experience, delightful at every turn.

It's a tad hard to find, but look for the distinctive gates and cobblestone courtyard (as pictured in the image with the woman in a pink jacket).

“Food, wine and friendship”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 4, 2012

I cannot say enough about our amazing experience at Tenute Baldovino. We were greeted by the passionate young winemaker, Carlo, and proceeded to spend several hours tasting, eating, and moving to multiple locations to really understand his unbelievable area and product. The tasting room was in his family home and we tried many wines as they were paired with delicious authentic Piemonte cuisine made by his mother and served by his sister. Even his father came in from the fields to share a glass with us, not once, but twice. We also got lots of love from his dogs! The wines were exquisite and we tasted many different types and vintages. We also visited his wine cellar to see where the wine was aged and even walked up into his fields to take in the amazing view! We also traveled into Costigliole d'Asti to see the castle and stop in for a drink at his friend's restaurant, Sinoira. We talked for hours and truly feel like we made a new Italian friend! We have been to many wineries over the years and rarely has the visit paired such unbelievable product with such an authentic experience.

“A fantastic vineyard visits”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2012

Tenute Baldovino is a little special winery.
Baldovino is a family-owned, family-run vineyard, as it has been for five generations, starting in 1902. The family's passion for winemaking shines out of every pore. Like everything else at Baldovino, the tasting room of is quite different - strikingly artistic and modern decor mixed with starkly traditional furnishings. When we arrived Carlo was busy with other visitors so we got a glass of water and then look around. We meet Carlos dad who not spoke English but what we could understand he was a lite bit angry that we had to wait. After a while we were invited in by Carlo Baldovino, who was so excited and passionate about his winemaking. He is a young guy, with very good English and boundless enthusiasm and can't imagine doing anything else. We were also meet by the family dogs, including a new litter of pups, which added a fun dimension to the experience.

Carlo's sister brought us delicious hors d'oeuvres like Crostini, Salami, chesses and other things that just kept on coming. They were well paired with the types of wines they poured us as well. One thing Carlo has tried to introduce to the traditional families of local wines is a variety of blends using different grapes. The results are sometimes mixed, but you never know until you try.

After a lovely tasting experience for about 2 hours and with a visit of Carlos dad that had picked some hazelnuts to my wife we were all stuffed beyond belief from the nice food and a bit tipsy from the generous tastings, and left with a big smile on our faces from the very personal and enjoyable experience. It is place you will come back to next time you are in the neighborhood.

“Become Part of the Family, then Leave Fat and Happy”

We don't normally review wineries because it's pointless - there are hundreds if not thousands of them in Italy and each has its own unique flavor. However, Tenute Baldovino was someplace a little special, so we thought we should share.

After a lovely tasting experience, we went up the hill to where they are planning to construct a new tasting area. Here they'd set up some picnic tables, with 360° views of the countryside and the village. We enjoyed one of their dessert wines with some homemade tiramasu with vines all around and took lots of photos. Carlo's dad, Remo, came up and met us at this time. We were all stuffed beyond belief from the nice food and a bit tipsy from the generous tastings, and left with a big smile on our faces from the very personal and enjoyable experience. It was so informal compared to the other vineyards we visited during our stay, so personal, enthusiastic and friendly. The type of place you feel like you're instantly close friends.
