Stopped for one night whilst on the C2C.

The room was OK. A decent size and fairly well kept and clean. The en-suite shower was appreciated, although it did run a bit hot/cold. We were staying in one of the annexes off the main pub. Breakfast in the morning was OK, if a little sparse.

The food in the pub was really good.

we stayed here on our C2C walk.we arrived in the early afternoon after the flat walk from Danby Wiske. The room was good in the fact that it was separate from the pub and looked out over a green area (camping field we think but it was empty when we were there)
We had soup when we arrived then dinner in the evening ...both were very good value as was the breakfast the next morning.
A lot of people may comment that the rooms were dated but we found everything we needed for a good nights sleep and at £60 for the night was a very reasonable price.

We booked in advance to the Blue Bell for one night, having not visited the area before. Staff were very pleasant, the evening meal (having had to wait some time at the bar for a table) was very good - no complaints there, and the beer was excellent (well kept).
The room was below the standard we expected... tatty and cramped, but clean, although I wasn't tempted to use the antiquated hairdryer! The bed was comfortable enough though and after a long, tiring journey we looked forward to a good night's sleep - however, it then became apparent that the area outside our ground floor room window was used for camping. Not only did it take away our privacy in the room (we ended up keeping the curtains closed) but our happy campers talked and laughed outside our window half the night. (This is why I don't stay at campsites). We then looked forward to the marvellous breakfast to set us up for the day, that we had read about on reviews on here, but I was disappointed. Maybe I'm a sausage snob, but I don't like cheap frozen ones... either way, I filled up on toast, of which there was plenty, and we went on our way.
Would I visit the inn again? Certainly for a meal and a decent pint of ale, but I think I'd sleep elsewhere.

Blue Bell Inn at Ingleby Cross was a great find after a long day's hike on the Coast to Coast walk. Friend Russ had visited its pub on a prior Coast to Coast walk but had never stayed there: his high hopes for a great stay were more than met. The room we had, #5, has a sitting area as well as an en suite bath and was more than spacious and comfortable enough for two weary walkers. The pub has a fine beverage selection and the meals were great: filling, tasty and cooked and served efficiently by host David Kinsella--a friendly and knowledgeable guy who clearly has found his life's calling. This is an excellent place to stay in a beautiful location. I'll stay there again if I'm lucky!

The bar is badly and unsympathetically lit by overhead lights, giving an eerie glow to the place. Landlady grumpy and unsmiling. Two uninteresting rewal ales: John Smiths and some blond beer from Sheffield (why?).
As fior the food: the tables had not been wiped down; the chips were excellent and all food home-made, but please: chicken and mushroom pie had two small slivers of mushroom, 6 chunks of chicken but no sauce or seasoning. Really poor. The brioche bread and butter pudding was bland and tasteless, served with the most tasteless, watery custard it's ever been my misfortune to eat.
I can't comment on the rooms, but, if you're walking in the area, there are some great village pubs in the area: this is not one of them!

I spent 3 nights at the Blue Bell Inn while on holiday in the UK from the USA. What a wonderful place to stay! The Blue Bell Inn is a pub, with accommodations separately attached just next door on the same grounds. The little village of Ingleby Cross is a convenient location for visiting both the moors and dales of Yorkshire. We stayed in room #5, a room with twin beds, a separate large sitting room with comfortable chairs & color tv, and an ensuire bath with shower. The room was very clean and comfortable, and even though it is directly adjacent to the pub, it is very quiet. The pub is delightful!! We had dinner the first evening, and a pint or two thereafter! David Kinsella, the host, owner and breakfast chef, is cheerful and friendly, and we looked forward to our chats with him each day. We'd ask his advice about where to go and how to get about, and his tips were perfect! His breakfast is delicious, and very filling. We had the Full English breakfast each morning, and would spend the rest of the day walking it off! It was always a great
beginning to a marvelous day. N. Yorkshire is exquisite! We visited Whitby and Scarborough on the North Sea, climbed castles, visited the ruins of ancient abbies, shopped in the bustling town centers, and drove the wonderfully exciting B-roads right through the tops of the moors, with herds of sheep and darting pheasants all about us! Thank you Dave for that tip! It was magnificent and magical! Then another day to the ancient, venerable city of York. Take advantage of the "park and ride" opportunity, and you won't have to drive into the city at all. York is fabulous, and York Minster is worth all the time you can give it. Our drive back to the Blue Bell Inn each night would take no more than an hour, so it is a very convenient location.
I highly recommend The Blue Bell Inn to anyone staying the area. You'll find a clean, comfortable room, a warm host, a pleasant pub filled with very freindly folk, delicious meals and above all else, a beautiful countryside that will take your breath away!

  • Liked — Everything! Perfect location, friendly host, great room, great pub!
  • Disliked — Having to bid farewell to Dave and the Swaledale Sheep!
