Back of Beyond - Kahandamodara
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 9, 2012

Away from everything and within a short stroll to pristine, wild beach and tranquil lagoon, this precious little hotel is bohemian eco chic at it's best. Simple, tasteful, unique and relaxed. Perfect for a honeymooning couple or a family reunion. Either way, you feel like it's all just for you.
Everything exceeds expectation. Whether exploring, swimming, picnicking, watching wild peacocks pass by your room as you read, or napping in the afternoon with the French doors flung wide to let in all the sounds of nature...every moment is perfect.
Like the building material, the food is sourced locally and every meal is a mmm mmm divine!
And all this is thanks to the efforts of a small but gifted staff who aim to please in every way and
delight in doing so.
And did I mention the most romantic, candlelit, outdoor shower ever!
Our time here was much too brief and we'd go out of our way to return here should the opportunity arise.
We were sorry not to have a chance to experience the other Back Of Beyond properties

Room Tip: Ask for the honeymoon cottage, if it's available. Away from the main building for more privacy.

Truly amazing place. From waking up to nothing but bird calls in the morning, to the organic home grown fruits and Vegetable that you will be served as fresh meals that will more than satisfy your taste buds and keep you coming back for more.. Its all fantastic as the staff are out to please, and you can count on a relaxing and tranquil time like very few places can offer. Also loads to do for those of you who love exploring the out doors from sea/lake bathing, hiking, bird watching and lots more.

Just don't expect a 5 star hotel as this is a concept Bungalow for true nature lovers, who want to get away from the concrete hotels and enjoy the outdoors in a clean, Eco-friendly, non obtrusive atmosphere. Also its great value for money with a high feel good factor from the whole experience. Don't forget to ask for fresh passion fruit juice if its in season. Thank you for a totally satisfying stay and we will be back.

We (4 kids between 6-10 years and 3 adults) stayed for one week at Kahandamodara and did not have the heart to leave. The ambiance is perfect to set the mood for relaxation, reflection, and conversation. The cottages are built using locally available materials and it is clear that much thought has been given to the architectural design. The hospitality is unparalleled, and the home-cooked meals that were made to order left us craving for more. The space is also perfect for kids - we went frog catching, swimming in the lagoon/ocean, kite flying, cycling, boating, fishing, crabbing. Given its location, it was also ideally situated as a base from which we could explore the southern coast of Sri Lanka (Yala national park, snorkeling in Weligama, monastaries). We'll be back, no doubt about it!

This was our holiday highlight, we loved every minute of our most relaxing, peaceful and food full filling stay.
The staff are so so friendly, they will do absolutely anything for you and go out of their way to meet your every need.
Everything in this hotel is totally fresh and home grown, including their own honey farm, buffalo milk/curd, vegetables, you name it!
Even if for what ever reason you can't stay here but plan on driving through the town, call a day ahead just to stop in for lunch. The food is the absolutely most beautiful flavours you will ever experience. In fact this was the only place in the whole of Sri Lanka where we found the food to be completely healthy, not oily curries, but clean fresh curries always with beautiful side salads etc. Even the dessert was healthy!!!!
Please go out of your way to at least have a few days here to unwind and refresh yourself. Fantastic is an understatment!!!!!

Awesome for kids! We went fishing, swimming, rock climbing, played on the beach, boat rides, cycling, rope bridge, swings, huge garden with rabbits, dogs and amazing bird life.

The staff was amazing, this is no star class hotel, but the service was 5 star. We stayed in the cottage which had a large bed, can easily hold 4-5 adults. The amazing roof top was one of the best experiences ever. Once our kids went to sleep, we got a bottle of wine (BYOB) and lounged on the roof top watching the amazing night sky.

The food was great, many, many options for excursions and cut away from it all. The beach was just a short walk away, though I don't recommend swimming there. Lovely scenery all around, Fresh fish from the local fishing harbor.

It had it all.

We stayed at the cottage and it was very peaceful and a great place to escape to from the busy city life. The food is cooked and brought to your cottage according to your liking and was definitely the best! The place is one with nature and most things are grown within the site. Good for nature lovers and adventure lovers or even if you just want to stay indoors and relax. Its great for family, friends and also couples. Definitely a romantic getaway for honeymooners.

My family spent 3 days at this wonderful place. We have a 8 year old son who was outdoors the whole time. The staff were very friendly and the naturalist spent a lot of time with our son. We went swinmming in the natural laggon. It is seperated out from the main lagoon and very safe. The sea is a short bike ride away as the resort had bikes for guests. The food was fantastic. We had local and western food with a superb BBQ one day. The staff are very accomadating and it is like being in your own place with everything attended to.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Located on the South Coast of Sri Lanka, 15 minutes from Tangalle and a 10 - minute walk from the beach, Back of Beyond Kahandamodara (Monera thenna) is named after the flock of peacocks that strut across this land. This 10-acre property lies on the eastern back of a river that flows out to the sea around 500 m from the property. The lodge consists of a 3 bedroom bungalow, 2 bedroom villa and a single bedroom cottage. These units can be booked independently or together for large groups. This retreat has been built mostly out of locally available materials including large mud bricks, bamboo, thatch for roofs etc. In keeping with our environmental policy and energy minimization, no AC nor swimming pools are available. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms with hot water showers. The rooms have either king-size double beds or twin beds. All rooms have ceiling fans and mosquito nets. Due to the thick clay brick walls, high ceilings and maximization of natural ventilation and tree cover, the buildings are very cool and airy. Most toilets have an open to air area (all are enclosed) to enhance the natural experience. The large open spaces and lawns around the buildings make this retreat a favourite for children to run around and cycle. The property has around 300 m of river frontage and kayaks are available for rental. The areas around the property and adjoining village roads are excellent for cycling and bicycles are also available for hire. A lovely wide and secluded beach is only a 10 minute walk from the property. Guests can help fishermen draw in their nets in the morning, or enjoy fishing in the nearby estuary. The Kalametiya bird sanctuary is only 15 minutes from the property. Bundala and Yala National parks are also 1.25 Hr and 2 hr from the property. A well-stocked library with books on archeology, history and fauna and flora of the area is available in the bungalow. A separate kitchen, staff quarters and drivers quarters is also provided. Most fruits and vegetables are grown in-house. ... more   less
