“Honeymoon at Ammos”
Reviewed February 23, 2007

My husband and I stayed at Ammos on the last leg of a big honeymoon trip to Greece. We actually decided to stay there because of the great reviews on TripAdvisor. It was a good call. We arrived at night and had a car and driver waiting for us. I knew the owner Nikos had arranged a rental car for us, but we didn't know he would drive us to Ammos, which was a major relief arriving late in a new island. We arrived around 10 pm and the little restaurant was packed with people enjoying good dinners. Their zucchini pie is fabulous. The wait staff is very friendly and accomodating. After 5 days in Santorini, we knew we'd be experiencing a very different scene in Crete--and we found it at eclectic, cool Ammos. The pool is tiny but they serve yummy Long Island Iced Teas. The little strip of beach is clean and a pleasant stroll. We really liked the modern rooms, the bath products, and the shower. The price was affordable and not luxury, but very welcoming, clean and relaxing. On a grey day, Nikos showed us the drive on the map to see the Sumaria Gorge, which was a great countryside driving experience (lots of goats and sheep on the roads!) The Well of the Turk in Chania was a recommended restaurant that we enjoyed, but for the price, a bit over-hyped. Be sure to hang out one night in Chania in one of the outdoor restaurants along the little Venetian port--street performers, cool people, lots of action. Chania seems to be very popular with Scandinavian families on holiday. As a Danish-American, I fit right in. We would go back and visit Ammos again.

  • Liked — The food was delicious, the rooms were clean, the staff friendly and cool. Everything!
  • Disliked — They need to better light and mark the stone stairs going down to the bathroom from the dining area. I missed the last step and fell.

This was a wonderful hotel. The hotel is right on the beach and a short drive from Chania. It is the best of both worlds- beach and old world. The rooms were really lovely with a little hot plate and frig, a nice balcony and a great pool. The restaurant was fine. Most of all the staff was very helpful and kind. I would highly recommend both this hotel and Crete.

We spent our Easter holidays at Ammos hotel, arrived very late at night, found it easily thanks to Nikos´last instructions over the phone, given our room key and escorted to our room in the full darkness and quietness of a Greek night in early spring.
The room though small warmed us up with its brilliant colours. Needless to say that we slept like 2 babies in the unusual silence broken only by the sea that we could not see but hear very close.
The next morning we were really curious to know where we ended up: the sea was really a few meters away and in between a small pool dotted with red deck chairs.

In the main building along with the reception there was the restaurant with the terrace where we enjoyed fresh and healthy breakfasts and had dinner every night because the food was simply terrific: the owner was so nice to prepare for us the last night a dish we had requested at the beginnning and were told that was not the right season!!

The hotel is cool, the location is perfect, everything is cared of in the slightest detail, but the the friendliness and the attitude of everybody made our stay even more remarkable and for sure we will come back again when it is hotter to enjoy the beautiful beach.
Just one recommendation: if you want to discover the island and there are some spots worth a visit, then rent a car and do not miss the pristine (not in the summer) beach of Elafonissi

My Wife and I spent a week here in May . It has just been redone and we were blown away at how amazing the funky decor was. It is located very close to hania 's old town (a few minutes by car). Nikos gave us unbelievable advice on where to go all over the western coast of Crete. We reccomend (as Nikos reccomended to us), the scary drive along the coast to the tiny village of Sfinari, with its secluded beach. secluded. Drive to the end of the beach and find the last restaurant. They will serve you fish that the family caught right out of the Sea , and you can enjoy it right at the edge of the beach. Ammos is affordable, with great rooms, service, hospitality, and charachter. All you need is a car and you are perfectly located to explore the island.

The Ammos was a perfect ending to our trip to Greece. The first two weeks was a land/sea trip with Overseas Adventure Travel. We booked the Ammos after reading reveiws on Trip Advisor. We (2 couples) had studios that opened onto the pool area and overlooked the ocean. Perfectly beautfiul.
Nickos and his staff were helpful in planning our days. The hotel and grounds were immaculate. I loved the decor...clean, uncluttered ..maybe Danish style. The restaurant served some of the best food we had in Greece, although we we fixed our own breakfast and enjoyed eating on our little patios.
There is a communal computer in the lobby. Just buy a card from the desk to use it. Also..great travel books and "take one/leave one" paperbacks.
One word of advise...if you are renting a car have it delivered to the Ammos rather than the airport. We would have never found the hotel...but once we got our bearings, we were ok. Also...we took a cab into Chania. at night..parking is a nightmare and the taxis are not expensive. We booked our car though Avis. They were wonderful to work with. The first car was way to small..our luggage wouldn't fit in the trunk so they sent us to the hotel in a cab and brought a larger car.

  • Liked — Quiet location just off of a busy highway, Almost private beach, view from patio of room, small restaturant with really good food
  • Disliked — There was nothing I didn't like
  • Tips/Secrets — If you rent a car have it delivered to hotel rather than airport

My wife and I and two other couples ended a 2 week tour of Greece by flying to Chania, Crete for a 2 nights stay. I booked our rooms at The Ammos many months in advance and Nikos was wonderful to respond to emails and questions. I was a bit apprehensive before arrival as the website photos made it look as if this was the hotel from Heaven but to our amazement, it was even better than we had expected. The staff bent over backwards to take care of us. Our seaside rooms were just that, overlooking the pool and the Sea of Crete. The town of Chania is a bit of a distance away however there is a bus for 1.10E that runs every half hour. What a quaint, beautiful town with many places to eat and shop. You can take a taxi for 6E if you want faster service. I can't say enough about our stay at the Ammos. The food is great the beach wonderful and the rooms very clean, neat, and nicely decorated. I wouldn't even consider another place to stay if returning to Crete. Nikos will arrange to have you picked up at the airport which we did. When we walked out of baggage claim, there was a driver with a sign with our name on it. He took us right to the hotel. Jim in Carmichael, CA, USA

  • Liked — Friendliness of staff and views from the rooms
  • Disliked — The distance from town which was not a big deal with buses and taxis availble
  • Tips/Secrets — Book early. This is a popular hotel due to its quality and value
