“It's decided - I'm moving to Kentraw, for Good!”

Four friends on their virgin Scotland trip - We had the fortune of staying at Kentraw for four nights and it was the perfect place to return to after a day touring the magnificent little island of Islay.

We took rooms three & four and felt the size was just right, the rooms were connected via a shared and beautiful bathroom (The complimentary soaps and shampoos from Arran Aromatics were gorgeous - its great to see support for local produce).

Interiors were chic and crisp, the photographs that adorned hallways and the lounge were a great touch and every effort was made to present a clean and modern experience that perfectly complemented the stunning farmland and loch views just outside.

As luck would have it, we were the only guests for the first three nights and the lounge was ideal; a nice warm fire, made all the more toasty by fine Islay drams over books, chess and conversation (thanks for joining us and sharing in the conversation, Hervey!).

We had rented a car so much of the Island was open to us (not all, and we do regret not trekking a bit to explore some of the bays and higher terrains). That being said, Kentraw Farm is perfectly situated - just off Bruichladdich and Kilchoman Distilleries. Every morning we were greeted by Loch Indaal, Bowmore winking at us from across the Loch and the seabirds hanging in the air.

Cannot more highly recommend this B&B - Brilliant spot and interiors, idyllic surroundings and utterly generous hosts. We left with heavy hearts but with new friends and fond memories - Hervey, Susan we are definitely coming back!

Your friend from Singapore,

Galen

p.s. The breakfasts were fantastic and deserve a separate review, suffice to say that we never missed one and they kept us going right through to lunch! Highly recommend the omelets!

A friend and I stayed for just two nights.
Susan and Hervey were extremely welcoming and friendly, the house was warm and comfortable, and the room was great. Breakfasts were consistently delicious. The house is some way from the road up a track, and a couple of miles from the nearest small village - a plus for us as we'd rather not have the lights and noise. Bruichladdich distillery is just a few minutes walk away. A visit to the nearest pub is more of a trek and would mean a taxi or designated driver for those who don't enjoy a few miles walk. We ate and drank at hotels at both Bridgend and Port Charlotte - about equal distances in opposite directions from Kentraw - and enjoyed both.
Recommended.

We visited Islay in September this year for a 'second honeymoon'. We only stayed three nights (unfortunately) but had a wonderful time!! After looking at the different B&Bs and hotels on offer, we deliberately chose Kentraw Farmhouse because it looked to be slightly secluded and seemed to offer the peace and tranquility we were after. We were not disappointed!!!

Kentraw Farmhouse is beautifully furnished, more what you would expect from a smart hotel than a small B&B, and the location was ideal for us. Slightly off the beaten track as they say, there was no traffic noise from passing cars and we woke up to beautiful views over the loch each morning, it really was idyllic (despite the slight wild weather!!!)

Not being your usual whisky fans we were keen to see what else the island offered, so after a great breakfast each morning (full scottish for me, smoked salmon or omelette for my wife) Geraldine sent us off with a map and a few tips on where to go and we went to explore. The island really is beautiful, even when the wind is doing its best to knock you off your feet. Getting back to the house after each full day of sight seeing was wonferful. We enjoyed a nice cup of tea (and biscuits) before passing very pleasant evenings playing cards and monopoly in the lounge with a bottle of red wine from the local co-op! Perfect!

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Room was extremely nice with huge bed and a sofa and the overall service from Geraldine was excellent. Would highly recommend Kentraw Farmhouse to all those looking for somewhere clean, comfortable and quiet to relax

My wife and I stayed here for 5 nights in the master suite, which was not cheap! We are regulars to Islay but this was our first visit to Kentraw. Geraldine was a great host and the room was nicely decorated with quality fixtures and fittings.

However, there were a few things that we think were missing from a 5 star B&B.

1) the room was a bit balnd and could have benefited from some flowers or a piece of artwork on the wall (the walls were bare). Also, there were no tea/coffee making facilities in the room. Little touches like a welcoming gift of a miniature of Islay malt whisky would be good - other B&Bs we have stayed in do this and the Kentraw website does picture the room we stayed in with a bottle of whisky on display!!

2) despite staying 5 nights and using the small bottles of shampoo, conditioner and shower gel provided when we arrived within 2 days, they were never replenished despite us leving the empty bottles in the shower to be taken away (they were not taken away, just left there!).

3) while the breakfast was nice, there wasn't the type of food on offer that a 5 star B&B should offer in our experience. There was only one type of juice on offer and there was never very much in the jug - we had to often ask for more and felt that it was being rationed. Also, we would have expected more choice of cereals, fresh fruits, yoghurts etc to be on offer. Geraldine had a very nice coffee machine but we only discovered by asking toward the end of our stay that we could actually have a coffee (latte, capuccino etc) from the machine - we were only offered ordinary coffee initially and had to ask for something different.

4) the stairs and guest space beneath our room were too noisy due to the wooden floors. Whilst they look nice, they are not condusive to a good sleep. We always dreaded other guests coming back late as we would be woken up. Similarly, we felt we had to tip toe around so as not to disturb others.

5) the guest lounge was way too big and uninviting and was placed directly under our bedroom, so we suffered from some noisy people one night.

Room Tip: Avoid the master suite if you want minimal noise disturbance from other guests.

Thank you for posting your review.

Your comments/suggestions are appreciated as is all feedback we receive whether it is face to face, by email or posted on the internet.

We will do our upmost to make positive changes in light of those where constructive criticism has been given. We have addressed some of the issues raised as follows:

1. Breakfasts – We aim to provide a hearty breakfast with a menu that satisfies most appetites. Juice is always available, we tend to put less in the jug and refill as required to keep the juice cold and fresh rather than letting a full jug of juice get warm over the duration of the breakfast period. Most guests do ask if they would like more, but we will look at an alternative. Our breakfast menu does state a range of coffees are available from the machine, however we will re-word this to clearly stipulate the choice of coffees.

2. Tea and coffee making facilities – We provide full tea and coffee making facilities in the hall and guests are welcome to take these to their room or use the guest lounge. We have avoided putting individual facilities in each room to avoid cluttering up surfaces; however we have reviewed this and are now providing full tea and coffee making facilities in the Master Suite.

3. Decoration – We have been adding pictures to the rooms over the course of the year. However, we accept that the lounge may have appeared a little bland and have recently purchased some more artwork to liven up the walls. The Master Suite has eaves which come down the wall which prevented conventional pictures being used; however we will get a little creative with this room to make sure there is some artwork in there. All other bedrooms do currently have lovely photos from our local Islay photographer. With regards to the wooden floors creating a ‘bare’ feel; this surfacing was chosen to complement the farmhouse aspect of the building and was also considered the most hygienic flooring for a guest house. In light of comments received we have recently added a large rug to the lounge room to create a more homely feel. The room size however cannot be changed; we regularly have groups of guests who wish to socialise together and they have been delighted to find a guest lounge that accommodates them comfortably….not many B&B’s offer this. Whilst the room may have seemed imposing to single travellers or couples; we now hope the added decorations will make it more welcoming.

4. Noise – it is unfortunate you experienced problems due to noise. We have been fully booked throughout the summer and have received minimal complaints about noise as we have had nice, conscientious guests staying with us who have respected the house and other guests whilst enjoying their stay and making use of the facilities. Unfortunately if people are going to be excessively loud they will undoubtedly cause a disturbance and be a nuisance to others, no matter what the layout of the house is, especially when whisky is involved! We can therefore only apologise if you experienced disturbance through this and hope we do not have many disrespectful guests in the future! With regards to the stairs which are a fully solid oak design, we accept that these can be noisy if people are wearing heavy footwear and are looking into options for carpeting.

5. Complimentary products – We are pleased to provide a range of Arran Aromatics toiletries for all our guests to use. We want our guests to enjoy these products and they are usually replenished if they have been emptied. On this occasion we failed in this regard. We apologise for this and we will ensure we check more thoroughly in future.

We hope this has addressed some of the issues raised. Once again, we thank you for your constructive feedback and hope the changes we have made will ensure all our future guests have an extremely comfortable and enjoyable stay.

Best wishes,
Kentraw Farmhouse.

Kentraw Farmhouse is very stylish, comfortable and clean, and Geraldine is friendly, helpful and cooks a lovely breakfast.
But there was a very intrusive problem when we stayed. We had booked the Master Suite as a treat for our wedding anniversary. It is an expensive room and we were looking forward to a relaxing stay. This was spoiled to a large degree by the other guests (a group of three on a whisky tour) who spent all evening in the echoing guest lounge directly beneath our room getting progessively louder (with the TV and their own shouting) as they got more drunk. In fairness to Geraldine she saw that there would be a problem before we even raised the issue and had asked the men to quieten down, but to no avail.
With considerate guests, Kentraw would be much better, but having the guest lounge straight underneath the best room is a bit of a design flaw.

Room Tip: Not room 2 (Master suite)

Spent three nights here on our trip to UIslay and were very pleased with our find. However the stairs are noisy and would be better carpeted, there are no tea/coffee making facitlities in the room although you can make your own in the hall and take it up to your room. The rooms were very comfortable and had everything we needed. The shower room was the best - excellent high quality fittings.
We never used the quest lounge but it was not very cosy being a large room with wooden floors and was rather dark - however we are not ones for sitting with others. Overall a very good stay, centrally located - although watch the drive up to the farm!
Geraldine was a very friendly hostess who runs the place on her own with great expertise -

Hostess is top notch and breakfast was the best we had on Islay. Rooms are very modern and quite comfortable and common areas are quite nice. Location is quiet and way back off the road on a hill overlooking the bay near Bruichladdich.
