“A home from home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2014

I would give Hotel Vecchio Asilo a hearty thumbs up for those travellers who, after a busy day of driving and exploring new places, crave the peace and quiet of ‘home’ because that is the atmosphere you will enjoy here - a home from home. For various reasons we travelled to Tuscany at a time we would normally have avoided (June/July). Knowing that this was the peak of tourist season, we deliberately sought out accommodation that would provide a retreat from the bustle of our travel schedule. Hotel Vecchio Asilo lived up to our expectations. Each day we would return to our hilltop haven and enjoy a bottle of wine on the terrace watching the sunset. It was a time to reflect on the day and the splendors of what we had seen.
The manager, Elio, assisted by his wife Stefania deserves special mention. Each morning we were served a delicious breakfast of cereal, cheeses, bread, ham and coffee, but always accompanied by cakes made by Stefania. On the days we had an early start, Elio would put together a simple breakfast that we could eat before we left. He was a source of many excellent restaurant suggestions as well as ideas for ‘off the beaten path’ places to visit.
As we reflect on the three and a half weeks we spent away from home, this stay in the Tuscan hills ranks as one that will live on in our memories. We may never meet Elio and his family again, but his pride in the establishment, his quiet attention to detail and his commitment to providing a memorable stay will be our lasting memory of a newfound friend.

Room Tip: Room 7 has a great view across the valley!

What a fabulous time we had here, two nights in room 7 which has wonderful views over the Tuscan hills. The place is absolutely spotlessly clean, cleanest place in anywhere we have stayed. Stephania and Elio speak great english, they are so helpful and gave us recommendations for eating and visiting. They gave us a wonderful map of Tuscany that we used all the time. The room is gorgeous, great shower. The breakfast was also fantastic with homemade (and delivered to your table) cakes, pizza, bruscietta. Something different each morning. San Gimignano is about a 5 minute drive and was our favourite city in Tuscany (and we visited many). Don't miss it. If you want a dinner suggestion and you are happy to be seated around a large table with people from other countries enjoying amazing Tuscan food and wine you must go to the Agriturismo il Vecchio Maneggio. The family who run it are just amazing as is the food and wine. Tiziana the lady of the house is such a character (great english) and from the minute you get there the wine, made on their farm, is flowing. It was certainly one of the best meals and evenings we spent in Tuscany and a night we will never forget.

This is a really nice relaxing property with great views of the Tuscany countryside. We felt like we were the only ones there a lot of the time when there were plenty of other guests - this really helps create an intimate atmosphere. It was lovely being able to purchase a bottle of local wine and drink it watching the sun go down on the B&B's terrace.

Breakfast was a real treat - it just kept coming! We had bread, local cheese, yogurt, pizza bread, fresh fruit and amazing slices of pineapple cake. We couldn't eat it all!

Well placed for a trip into San Gimignano by car - the views on the approach into town were amazing. The owners kindly sorted restaurant reservations for us and the restaurant gave us a discount because of it!

We visited Hotel Vecchio Asilo for 4 nights, for our honeymoon. It is an adorable small hotel in a beautiful part of Tuscany, and the hosts, Stefania and Elio, are absolutely wonderful people! They are extremely kind, and helped us immeasurably. They are extremely kind and thoughtful - Stefania baked my husband a small and very delicious birthday cake, when Elio, her husband, noticed from my husband's passport that it was his birthday! They recommended a wonderful restaurant in the neighboring village, helped us with bus and train schedules, told us of a great nearby town to visit and gave us considerate help and service at every opportunity. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a lovely and romantic Tuscan bed and breakfast!

Sincerely, Vittoria i Gianni

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room, that way you can have views of both the town and the hills. :)

We stayed with Elio and Stefania in late May/early June. I can't say enough about the service we received. The rooms were charming, the views spectacular, but by far the service and hospitality were the best thing about the hotel. Elio went above and beyond to recommend cities to see, restaurants, and routes. Every morning he served us the most delightful breakfast, all homemade by him and his wife Stefania. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and will stay there again when we return to Tuscany and San Gimignano.

My wife and I stayed at this hotel while traveling by car through the San Gimignano area. The hotel is a converted farmhouse, and before that it was a watchtower for San Gimignano in the 12th century. I chose this hotel based on other recommendations that said that Elio provided excellent information on places to visit. This was certainly true as he recommended Volterra and Monteriggioni, a hill town that has a population of 42 people! Elio also recommended a nearby restaurant in Santa Lucia and it was the best meal we had in Italy. Elio and Stefania are the proprietors, and serve an excellent breakfast. Stefania does most of the cooking and makes a creative fruit plate, with thinly sliced fruits laid out in a wonderful manner. Having visited Venice, Florence, Assisi, and Rome, this hotel was our favorite. Surprisingly, the hotel is rated only 1-star (I have no idea why), and my wife and I liked it much more than the 3- and 4-star hotels we stayed at. That's probably due to the person attention by Elio and Stefania. Everything was fine and in good order. We shared a bottle of wine in one of the garden areas, overlooking Tuscany. I would definitely come here again. It's a great value.

Six of us stayed at this hotel whilst travelling from around the San Gimignano area. Elio and Stefania were the perfect hosts helping with bags, giving info about the hotel and giving us recommendations for dinner in S.G. Elio's breakfast was amazing, along with Stefania's home baked cakes. My 4 year old decided he only wanted to eat strawberries and Elio wasted no time getting an extra bowl for him, perfectly presented as the rest of the breakfast. So full, most of us didn't have lunch that day!

Our room was the quadruple room, which was perfect for us with two small children. Loads of room and a good sized shower room. Not much of a view from the windows, but then we weren't in the hotel for long! Good space for parking, which was a necessity for us as we were in a people carrier which is not the easiest to park in Italy. A little bit of a drive to S.G, but then again you get the best views when you are driving towards it.

If we are in the area again we will definitely be back.
