This is an absolutely beautiful pub that deserves better. It s full of charm and character and with a few minor improvements such as lighting the fires, stocking the fridges and having welcoming staff would be amazing. But as it is, it is just so cold! We hung around long enough to have one drink then went to the cotley arms, which was lovely.

Just back from a family funeral in Devon and having stayed at this pub and had a few issues we wanted to check out other comments. It is rather strange that the most recent reviews reflect our own experience so closely and that these issues haven't been resolved by the owners of the pub. Must start by saying that the landlord & landlady tried very hard to be helpful and accommodating but some things were just not right. We turned up just before opening time to check into our rooms ( 3 booked in total ). Rooms were being readied but one had no heating on and definitely hadn't been vacuumed. Heating sorted in bedroom, but never worked in bathroom. Otherwise very nice room with comfortable bed.
Other family members were meeting us and we had booked a table for 10 people to eat that evening but, guess what, we were told sorry but the chef hadn't turned up ( sound familiar ) so no food. The owners then phoned around and got us a table at a pub down the road. We had to make some hasty calls to inform the others of the new venue. To their credit the owners drove the 5 of us to the other pub and collected us later that evening.
Before we headed off we had a drink in the bar but as mentioned by others the pub was freezing with only 1 fireplace which we had to wait to be lit so we could be comfortable. The same thing applied the next morning when we came to the bar for our breakfast. The breakfast however was very good.
Finally on checking out, the credit card machine wouldn't work and we had to find enough cash between us to cover the bill !!

We arrived at the pub having booked a table a few days , the fire had only just been lit and we were freezing. The scruffy looking barbarians out to serve us and informed us that the Portuguese chef had not turned up for work. We decided to have a drink and see if showed up but after about 20 minutes we were informed the chefs not coming hes drunk again! The barman was very apologetic and offered to refund our drinks so we sat and waited for our refund, it didn't arrive perhaps he expected us to have another drink but we had had enough and besides it was my birthday and we needed to find another pub with a table for four to spare.
This pub should be avoided at all costs.

After booking a week in advance I did not expect to arrive at a freezing cold Inn to be told we would have to wait while some one was found to prepare a room for us, Three fireplaces and not one fire lit and that was after 6pm

The meat, roast potatoes, parsnips, stuffing veg was all cooked lovely. The chief is Portuguese and cooks it in his own unique way. He was very obliging and asked us if we wanted more we were welcome. Really lovely chap and a wonderful chief.

I am wondering the same as Philip E in his review????
Very confused as to the negative reviews?????
This pub is wonderful in every way, a beautiful pub beautifully kept with a marvellous charm both from it's old worlde historic attraction and the amazingly warm reception from the lady who runs this comfortable establishment.
I have stayed and eaten here several times and would recommend staying .to anyone.
The food is great, good honest tasty food the type that fills you in portion and satisfaction and a wide choice.
The rooms are interestingly finishes with their own unique style not like all the bland places I have stayed on my many travels. They are warm, clean and very comfortable.
This I can honestly say is a gem and trust me that doesn't come from this old traveller easily, a wonderful example of an olde English pub with a warm and friendly atmosphere.

Well that is my view and I really can't understand what the bad reviews here are about, I have stayed in some pretty rough dives over the years and never seen reviews like this, very strange, don't get it and they certainly do not reflect my experience.

Recommended in full, go and enjoy a fantastic country diamond.... John

Room Tip: All the rooms look really good, don't think you can go wrong....

This was once a great pub but now it's a terrible pub, such a shame as its a lovely location and the inside could be special like it was a few months back!!! If you want to freeze then by all means go here, no heat no atmosphere and if you want your husband flirted with then this is for you!!
Give this a wide berth and go to the Tytherleigh Arms or The Cotley Inn as they are the only decent places nearby, if this review sounds bad then just ask the locals!!! That will give you the picture!
