“Lost in Translation?”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 30, 2013

Overall, we enjoyed our 2 night stay in the hotel. The room was spacious and clean. The view from from the balcony of La Dole was outstanding.But... We had enquired in advance and were given a very competitively priced demi-pension rate. When we arrived down for our dinner the first evening, the waitress gave us the full menu. I told her that we had agreed a demi- pension rate and queried if there was a separate menu in such circumstances. She informed us that there was not and that we could work off the full menu. When checking out, I was amazed to discover that the bill was way in excess of what I had estimated. When I pointed out that we had agreed a demi-pension rate, the owner(?) told us that we had eaten from the full menu rather that the restricted menu for those on a special rate. Despite pointing out that we had raised this very point, the man was not for turning. That said, the food was excellent but be aware.

a really good food, and the owner is very respectful - but still, the piece of cheese Raclette that was served for 4 was the same as for 3 at the next table. However, very cosy, with good food and correct prices

Stayed with a big group for 10 days. Everything was OK, well equipped cozy rooms, good breakfast and dinner, spacious parking. The owners are very kind and helpful, some of them speak English so knowledge of french is not crucial, but surely can make your life much easier (like everywhere in France).
Great place to spend calm holidays with a family/friends, if you are not looking for something exceptional. .

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Gai Pinson (The Merry Finch) in Les Rousses for the Christmas holiday period. It is a lovely family-run hotel situated just on the edge of the town. It has all the charm of ski chalet with the warm welcome of the family, including the friendly family dog who sleeps behind the reception desk. The rooms are mid-size (normal for French hotels, but could be considered small by American hotel standards). However, the rooms are very comfortable and have a flat-screen TV, double bed, desk etc. There are larger double rooms available for family groups. The bathrooms are of a very good size. The bedrooms have double-glazed windows and have individual heating. The balconies off the bedrooms have lovely views across the ski slopes.

In terms of location, the cross-country pistes are a mere 300m walk away. The town is a little further, but takes less than 10 minutes to walk there through the charming village. The town has several restaurants, cafes, a pharmacy, newsagent, cinema, post office, ski school etc. Parking is easy, with a parking area opposite the hotel. There is garaged parking for an extra fee.

We had demi-pension, which included a good buffet breakfast and dinner in the evening. For dinner, there were always three courses (entree, main and dessert) with two choices at each level (or sometimes four for dessert). The food was very good, with decent portion sizes (important after a day of skiing!), and good variety using local produce.

I would recommend this hotel for those looking for a relaxing holiday in a friendly environment. The cross-country skiing is excellent, and there are also down-hill pistes (I just didn't use them).
