“A very handy stopover on the way to Germany from the UK”
Reviewed November 1, 2012

My wife and I stopped here on the way to and from Germany, where we were visiting family. The hotel is situated right by (but sufficiently away from) the main motorway from Calais/Ostend to Ghent, Antwerp and Germany, and it is outside Bruges, a wonderful place to visit but difficult to park in. Good parking available at the hotel. We booked via a 'booking' website (the clue is in the title) and good a very good room rate for a large bedroom with large en suite bathroom. The Reception staff are friendly, the restaurant is good for dinner (we ate there once and out in Oostkamp once) but we think that E16 for a buffet breakfast is too much per person unless you have a huge appetite. We knew we would be sitting in the car most of the day so decided to go for something smaller en route (and there is plenty of choice once on the road). Clearly this is a popular hotel for business as well as 'tourist' travellers, so it is advisable to book well in advance. We would recommend it - the rooms are quiet, comfortable with large beds, have great shower/wet rooms and a bath for those who want one.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a higher floor to get away from unecssary car park/road noise

All I can say is - STAY AT THIS HOTEL.

If you've read my other reviews, you'll know we don't mind being on the fringe of town. Now that'll either suit you or it won't, but it this case, for what you get, it's worth being a 10 minute cab from the centre of Bruge, Bruges, Brugges.... Whatever you prefer!

We travelled up from Frankfurt (review to follow!) to Bruge - about a 5/6 hour drive.
The hotel, first of all is very easy to locate - It is just off the motorway, but you needent worry about the noise etc - it is very quiet.

From the outside, the hotel looks pleasant and inviting.

The moment you step inside, you soon realise you've made a brilliant decision. The staff are friendly and welcoming, the botique lobby area is impressive and hides promises of things to come.

But it's the bedrooms that really set this place alight. WOW. The first impression is MASSIVE. Massive everything - Massive bed with the most comfortable bed in the world. Massive room, with more than adequate seating areas, fabulous LCD mounted TV (42" +) and the MASSIVE bathroom.... wetroom, whatever you want to call it... just impressive all round.

The decor is very modern but doesn't try too hard - It's been designed very well.

It's the kind of room you look at and think... how can I reasonably spend as much time in here as possible... to hell with the sight seeing, I wanna lay in, on around, spread eagled on that bed!

After a long drive and a wonderfully relaxing shower and change of clothes, it was off to the hotel bar for a drink.
I had my parents from New Zealand travelling with me and my fiance .... we met in the lobby bar and they could hardly contain their appreciation for such a wonderful hotel stay!

We men settled into some choice Belgium beer whilst the ladies enjoyed a wine, all served by the ever helpful and insightful bar staff, whose knowledge of 'Kiwi' was better than our Flemish.

We moved through to the dining room for another delightful experience. What wonderful service. We enjoyed a diverse menu that neither scrimped or over did it's portions and the attention to detail was that of a michelin starred London restaurant.

We ate, we drank and we were very merry, for two wonderful nights.

Now, I would say this hotel rivals anything in Las Vegas (reviews to follow!), both for size, luxury and for price.

This hotel cost me about £60 per room per night (midweek).
The cab into Bruge is about 15 euro... but even so... it's such a great place to stay, such great quality, that its worth every penny - I cannot stress that enough.

I was not disappointed with any aspect of the hotel... It is a haven - It also has a spa and pool etc, which we will have to travel back to, to use!

Please please please - If you are visiting Bruge and you want to stay in the best hotel money can buy and you're not fussed about the small matter of a 10 minute cab ride....STAY IN THIS HOTEL! :)

I think you get the point.
Enjoy.

Hotel extremely easy to find just off motorway.

Extremely friend staff, rooms gorgeous and a fantastic size with modern facilities. We drove to the Park and Ride at the bus station in Bruges centre and used this - a relatively simple 10 minute journey from the hotel.

Breakfast was excellent with a large choice.

Highly recommended for a 1-2 night stay in the Bruges area.

Great very large bathroom, with separate bath and shower. Modern design large bedroom, memory phone mattress which I don't like, but that's just a personal thing. Free parking and free wifi, excellent breakfast. It's about a 10 min drive to Brugge centre by car.

Stayed here for two nights from 18/09/12 until 20/09/12 the hotel is very easy to get to, we travelled from Dunkirk and found it easily, our room was on the third floor and was very large, the bed was extremely comfortable, and the bathroom was fantastic, with a walk in shower and a bath, We ate in the hotel both nights we stayed and the service and food was excellent. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

We choose this hotel as it was about half the cost of staying in the centre of Brugge for 4 nights B&B. The hotel is very easy to find just off the E40 motorway and easy to navigate from Euro Tunnel (no sat nav required - its that easy with an old fashioned map and roadsigns!). Ample free parking. Nice relaxed 12.00 lunchtime check out time. The receptionist when we arrived was so enthusiastic and happy you couldn't but help smile back (Evie?). She also explained the best way to get to Brugge was on the public bus and gave us directions to the bus stop and a timetable** as well as a map of Brugge. All the staff we encountered at the hotel spoke excellent English, and seemed willing/happy to do so. We were given a complimentry upgrade to a comfort room with a view of the field out the back which was big and clean with tea/coffee, (the bar happily gave us a small jug of fresh milk to take up) a hairdryer, iron & ironing board, mini-bar, TV, two warbrobes with sufficient hangars, extra blankets & pillows. The bathroom was big, in good condition and had a seperate bath and shower.
We had a drink in the bar/terrace and a meal in the restaurant on our first night which was very pleasant, excellent food although a little expensive (target market and about the same cost as eating in central Brugge). Breakfast was VERY good - lots to choose from and all very nice - the best breakfasts I have had in a mainland Europe Hotel. We did not have time to use the fitness suite etc so unable to comment on this.
Minus points that didn't give this place 5/5 for the price:-
Whilst beds are very much personal choice we both found this one a bit too soft for our liking but it was certainly huge, confortable with a very thick duvet.
There was sometimes a drain-type smell in the bathroom.
The Wi-Fi only worked in the areas of room more central to the hotel eg just inside the door/bathroom area and not at the desk, near the bed or windows.
The general theme/decoration & carpets are dark giving quite an oppressive feel (again personal choice) and there was some staining, possibly from a chemical cleaner, on the carpet.
The traffic noise from the motorway can be heard -not an issue for us and it is not loud with the door to the small balcony closed. The hotel will give you ear plugs for free if needed.
The restaurant was not as clean as it could be, eg fries in the radiator and evidence someone had used the curtain to wipe their fingers.
No swimming pool to accompany the fitness centre.

All in all I would recommend this hotel to anyone who does not mind doing a bit of extra walking before and after their day out in Brugge, and I would stay here again (the minus points are really quite minor) and would consider other hotels in the Van Der Valk chain based on the stay at this one. Overall it was a very good expereince and we had nothing to complain about. Bear in mind that is is a corporate chain hotel, and it is not a cosy family establishment.

**The bus stop for routes 20 & 21 is a brisk 12-15 minute walk through an industrial estate area and is located outside a newsagents where you can buy a "saver" type ticket which worked out at 90cents per person each way. The busses run loosly to the timetable, especially on the return journey from Brugge and on the way back you have to request the bus to stop by pressing the bell - there is a handy yellow/green BRICO sign on the left hand side just before to help time the button pressing! The bus stops at Brugge train station where it is another 10-15 minute walk to the Market Square in the centre. All the bus drivers we saw spoke good English. It is also possible to get the train but this is about a 20-25 minute walk from the hotel. The hotel "special rate" for a taxi was 19.50Euro each way, so bus and a bit of extra walking well worth it. There are also park and ride schemes in Brugge if you want to drive, but not if you want to sample Belgian beer!

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the car park are facing away from the motorway (although its still a busy "A...

We stayed here for one night during trip from Austria to UK. Excellent location close to motorway, 15 minutes drive from centre of Bruges and 70 minutes from Calais Eurotunnel terminal. Hotel is large with 106 rooms and large free car park. Our room (28 on ground floor)was very comfortable, only problem was an unpleasant smell in the bathroom which seemed to be coming from the drains, staff were very apologetic. The TV was "interesting", you had to press 4 buttons to switch it on? We didn't eat in the hotel, the attractions of Brugge were too tempting. Based on this visit we would certainly stay again during 'transit' across Europe.
