We'd been told about the delights of this hotel before we embarked on our cycling trip down the Danube and it really lived up to expectations. Bright, clean, modern and cheerful from the owners' greeting to the flower petals sprinkled on the breakfast buffet. Every little touch showed the dedication to clean and green in this hotel. Great breakfast, terrific garden with large pond (not swimming pool, but you could swim in it), tasteful hammocks, even a peach tree and a field of sunflowers to gaze on! The artistic touch and attention to detail was everywhere and we would highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Our room was unusual-very large, modern with shower actually in the bedroom. A small toilet. All room...

We loved this relaxing, friendly, and organic guesthouse. The rooms are nice and very clean. Breakfast is excellent -- a typical Austrian hotel spread, but done with great quality organic meats, cheeses, bread, and amazing jam. The staff is incredible. We received so much help planning our daytrips, including advice about local heurigen and hiking through the vineyards.

I was concerned that Mautern might not be a convenient place to stay without a car, but it turned out to be the perfect base. It's just far enough off the beaten path to feel authentic, yet convenient to the big attractions. We took a bus to Melk, and a boat back, rented bikes to go to Durnstein and Weissenkirchen, and hiked to Gottwieg Abbey.

We have been wandering the world, visiting places that are exciting, elegant, interesting and scary, but we always say that there is no place like home in California. Now, we feel we have found that amazing place that combines home with all of the fun and excitement of travel. Staying at Ad Vineas is just a perfectly happy holiday - kindness and hospitality are there for every guest, yet made us feel very special with restaurant, sightseeing and vineyard visit recommendations especially for us. It's not so easy to "drop in" from California, but after this second week long visit, we know, as our famous governor said, WE'LL BE BACK.

This modern guesthouse is located in a quiet but central residential part of Mautern, a village about 3 km from Krems. It belongs to the winery Nikolaihof, one of the oldest and most important ones of Wachau. They produce organic wine and also the guesthouse is eco-friendly. The rooms are comfortable and spacious. There is a flat screen tv, a separate toilet and a shower and a basin integreated in the room. We were lucky and got one of the two rooms with a huge terrace. Great for sipping a glass of the Nikolaihof wine, which you can get on reasonable prices from the hotel (self service). Continental breakfast buffet is great with a good selection of cheese and cold meat. Most items are of organic production. With good weather you can sit on the lovely garden terrace.
Newest attraction of the garden is a swimming pond. How much nicer than the usual swimming pools! For further entertainment there is also a trampoline, a ping-pong table and a slackline.
The owners are very friendly and willing to assist you with restaurant reservations and excursions. In Mautern there is Landhaus Bacher, one ot the best Austrian restaurants (expensive, but worth every penny if you are a foodie) and Weinstube Nikolaihof (traditional food, wonderful dining in the patio), which are both only a few minutes walking from the hotel. Otherwise there is a good selection of shops and restaurants in Krems. However you need a car or a bicycle to reach it.
