James and Helen Knight were the stars of the show when my parents and I stayed at KIWR. We had only booked one day there in the spa suite, as we were trying to cut costs and see the highlights of the island in only two days. All it took was check-in and an absolutely extraordinary supper served up directly by James and Helen to make us change our minds and stay for an extra day. Would have stayed more if we had the time, and would most definitely come back again and again!

The atmosphere of the place is surreal - if you want to stay at a place that has it all then this is the way to go. Words can't describe the overall experience that is this gem.

One of the things that make it stand out from any other place I have ever stayed is the fair dinkum personal service; James and Helen are a young couple living their dream of operating an small eco-friendly retreat in the wilderness, and the enthusiasm and attention to detail they show in every aspect of their work, from the finely appointed rooms to the service they provide at their first-class restaurant really shines. The way they provided such wonderful service to all the guests we spoke to while we were there in 30+ rooms is truly an amazing feat.

I can say no more, it won't do it any justice. A place you really must see and experience to believe. Five stars for sure!

I agree with the other reviewers - this is THE place to stay at the Flinders Chase end of the island. We had the best time here! The food is, indeed, out of this world. We ate there two nights, and were considering kidnapping the chef so we could have meals like this for the rest of our lives! The hotel staff were also most cheerful and friendly.

We also love the little wallabies which come to be fed every night. They captivated the children - I noted that the parents were happily sipping their wine on the hotel terrace while the wallabies entertained the kids! Later at night, the possums also made an appearance.

Our room wasn't the greatest, especially as I ended up sleeping in the bottom of a bunk bed. But it was good enough, especially as we spent very little time there. It was very spacious, with a separate living room, and a full kitchen too.

We also went on the Hanson Bay Koala Sanctuary noctural walk. The tour guide, the manager of the sanctuary, came to pick us up (for a small extra cost) which was great, because hire car companies on Kangaroo Island don't insure you to drive at night. It also meant that the driver (me) could savour the wine over dinner. The tour was very good value-for-money, and fun too. We say two koalas having a strong "exchange of views" - an amazing experience! It's most rare to see them so animated! You can book the tour through the hotel's front desk.

We would endorse the recent reviews which compliment the owners on the superb food (best we had in Australia, too) - Gordon Ramsay would have been proud of the lemon dessert I had - plus a genuinely warm welcome and very comfortable accommodation.

We went on a guided night-hike at the nearby "Koala Walk" sanctuary; you get to see not just sleepy koalas but loads of other animals including wallabies night-feeding, possums, insect life such as inch-long ants, and the clear southern night-sky in a perfectly dark meadow in the middle of a wilderness - something never to be forgotten.

Such a shame we had only one night here and a shame it is so far to go for a repeat experience!

We stayed at the Wilderness Retreat as part of an APT tour and it really was just wonderful. We only had a night here, and I wish we could go back for longer. It all just felt so in keeping with the environment and the Flinders Chase National Park around it.

The family owners are clearly passionate about their business and ensuring that guests are comfortable.

This would be the perfect base for day trips around Kangaroo Island, or just to spend some time relaxing away from it all and taking bush walks.

We were extremely pleased with our stay at the retreat. We loved seeing the wallabies, including a joey in his mother's pouch. The first night we were there 9 wallabies came to our porch for food. We also saw possoms, a kangaroo, birds and an echidna at the retreat with very little effort. The food was outstanding, by far the best we had in Australia, far surpassing more expensive food we had in Cairns. The owners and all the staff went out of their way to be accomodating. The location was ideal for our sightseeing except for the fairy penguins. The family suite was fine for our family of 4 and we enjoyed watching DVDs at night. My children thought that the collection of free DVDs available was superior to that offered at another place we stayed at in Australia. We stayed for 2 nights and wished we could stay for more. The temperature in the rooms was adjustable and the place was very comfortable. I was pleasantly surprised with the water pressure in the showers. I would recommend this place without reservation.

We had a long weekend at the Wilderness retreat and it was just wonderful. The owners Helen and James were really friendly and helpful and the staff were so lovely too, especially Tammy. The room was huge and really comfortable, and we had our own little balcony to sit out on too which was wonderful at dusk when the wallabies and possoms came out to play.
The food in the restaurant was great too and they even went out of their way to customise dishes for us. They also have a great locally produced wine list.
I would recommend this retreat to anyone, you need a car to get around, but to be able to do KI at your own pace but not have to worry about self catering etc it was just perfect.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at KIWR. I was there for a week but wished I had much longer. The owners and staff were friendly and welcoming and made me feel right at home. The rooms are comfortable, clean and well-appointed, the location quiet and peaceful. The friendly wallabies and possums that frequent the courtyard were absolutely delightful, although, as with any wild animals, there was no guarantee they would put in an appearance.

Kangaroo Island itself was quite magnificent and the wilderness retreat proved an excellent base from which to explore the attractions at the western end of the island. In addition to being right next door to Flinders Chase National Park, the Retreat is set amongst native bush with an abundance of wildlife. Fairy-wrens were regular visitors to the tree outside my window.

Walks around the tracks at the Retreat revealed plenty of other wildlife including echidnas, goannas, and a wide variety of birds. Birdwatchers will find plenty to occupy themselves – I heard a western whipbird calling, saw young rainbow lorikeets being fed by their parents, plus saw plenty of other birds including superb fairy-wrens and yellow-tailed black cockatoos. A highlight was seeing a young collared sparrowhawk perched on a car one morning just by the entrance to the eco-lodge - it showed no fear, even when I approached to only a couple of metres away. And all this just on the grounds of the retreat!

The KIWR is a perfect place to relax and unwind and I would definitely stay there again.
