“Lovely stay in historic lighthouse keepers cottage”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 26, 2012

We stayed in the Parndana Cottage for 3 nights. What a wonderfully comfortable and interesting place to stay. We loved the isolation and peacefulness. It was great to be able to walk to the Lighthouse and to the fur seals. The Remarkable Rocks and Weirs Cove is a short 10 minute drive away. The weather was windy and cold whilst we stayed at the cottage, but with the lovely thick stone walls, it was very warm and comfortable inside.

We loved that the cottage had kept the flavour of a historic cottage, and not modernised. It added to the character and feeling of the place. We did not want for anything. It is recommended that you plan to cater for yourselves at the cottage, particularly for dinners, as the closest restaurant is 30 minutes drive away. There is a good cafe in the NP, but is only open from 10am-5pm.

Dear cherrybrookchick,

Thank you for letting us know how much you enjoyed your stay at Parndana Lodge! The heritage listed stone cottages at Cape du Couedic were built to withstand the weather for the benefit of the early lighthouse keepers and now offer the same reassuring comfort to guests. As you have found, guests staying overnight at Cape du Couedic often have the privilege of enjoying the spectacular coastal scenery and wildlife in splendid isolation, long after the crowds have gone - we're glad you enjoyed this very special experience!

The cottages are close to the lighthouse, and you can see it from most windows. Cape de Couedic is at the far western end of KI: you are advised to get there with plenty of petrol in the tank, as petrol is not available in the National Park.
We stayed at the Parndana lodge: three room, a living room and a kitchen with all amenities. the bathroom is a bit rough, but usable, and hot water is always working.
This lighthouse is sitting almost on top of Admiral arch, where a big group of seals has made his home, and within walking distance of the Remarkable Rocks (about 6 km).
The lodge is very well equipped, you do not need to bring anything with you: but if you want breakfast in the morning, or any other meal during the day, do not forget to take it with you.
all in all a memorable experience.

Room Tip: The three cottages are pretty much similar

Dear giorgiosydney,

We’re pleased to hear that your stay in Parndana Lodge was such a memorable experience! The location of the Cape du Couedic lighthouse keeper’s cottages set amidst coastal grandeur, adjacent to the lighthouse and within easy walking distance of the New Zealand fur seal colony at Admiral’s Arch, is certainly unsurpassed. The cottages have been renovated in keeping with their heritage listing but if there is any amenity that has been overlooked in the bathroom please let us know - we welcome guest recommendations for improvements! Your recommendation to ensure adequate fuel and food supplies is sound advice for future guests – thank you!

We stayed in Parndara lodge -- it was very spacious and clean. The kitchen had more than enough utensils, and one of the previous guests had written in the guestbook that they baked bread in the wood stove. We did bring sufficient groceries because the cabins are located far away from everything -- I think it was a 30 minute drive back to the park headquarters, and another 2 hours or so past that to Kingscote.
We enjoyed the quietness of the setting and seeing wildlife (mostly wallabies) at our doorstep. There are tour buses during the day that visit the lighthouse and walkways that overlook the seals playing in the ocean, but everyone leaves by dusk and you then have acres of land to yourselves. We didn't see our neighbors at all in the other two cabins.
It was cool when we visited but the heaters in the rooms kept us warm, and the gas fireplace worked well too. The bathroom is in the enclosed back porch -- and can be cool when the weather is cool. While it isn't the Four Seasons and won't appeal to anyone looking for luxury, it was a stay for us that will provide many pleasant memories. The remoteness and wildlife can't be beat. There are many good hiking trails in the area where we spotted tons of 'roos and echnidas.

Room Tip: If available, try to book Troubridge cottage -- it was the head lighthouse keeper's cottage and...

We’re pleased that you enjoyed the quiet isolation of Cape du Couedic – such a precious commodity in an increasingly busy world! As there are only three lighthouse keepers cottages in this remote location guests often have the privilege of enjoying this spectacular location by themselves. At these times encounters with wildlife and walking through the magnificent coastal environment are even more special. We’re glad that your stay at Parndana Lodge was so comfortable and left you with such pleasant memories. Thank you for your positive review

This was our second lighthouse experience on Kangaroo Island and we were amazed at the location and it's accessibility to KI's amazing sights. You are right in the heart of fur seal country, the Remarkable Rocks and Admiral's Arch giving you private access to these spots when all the tourists have gone home. Comfortable accommodation with charm and character and so quiet.

Room Tip: Try for the head lighthouse keepers cottage as it is a bit more private.

Dear Lissie D

Finding a place to stay which has character, is in a stunning location with easy access to main attractions and is away from the crowds can be a rare find. But as you have discovered, Cape du Couedic ticks all the boxes! Thank you for letting us know how much you have continued to enjoy your stay at Kangaroo Island’s lighthouse keeper’s cottages!

This was our fourth stay at the Cape de Couedic cottages. We love the charm of the old homes and the location is amazing. Checking in at the national park visitor centre was easy. The picnic areas at the centre are also a great spot to go for a BBQ. As long as you like seclusion and self-catering, you will love staying at the cottages!

Dear peterjessgard,

One way to relive an enjoyable and memorable holiday experience is to keep coming back! We’re glad you have been able to revisit the Cape du Couedic cottages and that you like the addition of a barbeque facility which has been provided in response to guest feedback. Thank you for taking the time to submit a review - there is no greater recommendation than return guests!

My husband I stayed at Parndana Lodge for two nights in August. The place is a tad rustic - and since we were there during the winter, it was a tad chilly. But we utilized the fireplace and wood stoves and oil heaters. We bought groceries in Kingscote after renting our car at the airport and brought them to the lodge, as there are no grocery stores (that we knew of) on the western side of the island. We took advantage of being just steps away from the lighthouse and saw an incredible sunrise. Because we were able to access Admiral's arch and the boardwalks so early in the morning, we beat the crowds and enjoyed the place all to ourselves. I read that Cape du Couedic has the best views on the island - and I absolutely agree. We're not sure if we'll ever travel to Australia again (as we are Americans) but if we do ever go back to Kangaroo Island, we want to go back to Parndana Lodge with a big group of friends.

We’re pleased to hear that your stay at Cape du Couedic was such a rewarding experience! The coastal and ocean views in this remote location are unsurpassed and as you have found, guests staying at the lighthouse keeper’s cottages often have the advantage of enjoying the beauty of the natural environment all by themselves – including magnificent sunrises and sunsets. Should the dream of a return trip to Kangaroo Island ever become a reality, we’ll look forward to welcoming you back to Cape du Couedic!

We stayed in Pardana Cottage for 2 nights at the end of our Kangaroo Island holiday. It was everything we had hoped for in a winter break to the island and more. We felt very isolated (none of the other cottages were rented), the wind was cold and strong and the ghost stories had us all in a state of nervous excitement! Loved the seal colony being so close - we spent a long time just watching their antics. The house itself was very comfortable, the wood fired stove kept us busy while we tended a roast beef fillet cooked to perfection and then marshmallows on sticks. The visitors centre was very helpful in providing the shortfall in our food supplies - selling us small portions of salad and butter! I would strongly suggest visitors stock up with everything at Kingscote or Penneshaw as the really are no other alternatives for food shopping as such. We loved the Remarkable rocks and the lighthouse. You really do feel very remote and would need to love this aspect of the holiday. It was just the feeling we were after! I would loved to have stayed longer to do more walking in the park and explore further areas. It was perfect for us and 3 young adults.

Dear swagsnextholiday,

It’s good to hear that your stay at Cape du Couedic exceeded your expectations! The comfort and character of Parndana Lodge would have been perfectly complemented by the aroma of roast beef! As you have noted, although Cape du Couedic is only a short drive from the Flinders Chase Visitor Centre, staying at one of the three lighthouse keeper’s cottages is ideal for guests who want to escape and enjoy a very special holiday experience in a remote location. We’re glad you enjoyed the setting of the cottages amidst spectacular coastal scenery and just a short walk from Admiral’s Arch and its New Zealand Fur Seal colony and look forward to welcoming you back if you have the opportunity to explore more of the park. Many thanks for sharing your experience!
