“Beautiful, but no comfortable chairs here.”
Reviewed June 2, 2013

We decided to have a splurge for two nights before returning home. The drive here was spectacular despite the rain, wonderful scenery. Warm welcome from very professional, friendly staff. Very attractive building. We had chosen a superior room. It was a large, corner room with a beautiful beamed ceiling and two windows, each of which gave stunning views. There was a big, bright bathroom, also with lovely views. We had a huge, comfortable bed with attractive draperies and there was a a dining chair in front of the television and a bigger chair in the corner. Both looked attractive and matched the decor but were extremely uncomfortable to sit on, no support whatsoever. We were not on business but, like many people travelling, wanted to use our laptop. This could only be achieved by scrambling on the floor under the table and unplugging either the television or desk lamp. Downstairs, we had a snack in the bar. It was nicely presented and served but it was warm rather than hot so not so enjoyable. We discussed the menu for the following evening with a very nice staff member but there was very little for vegetarians. I don't think a plate of grilled vegetables is very imaginitive. Here also, the seating looked nice but was very uncomfortable. We decided we didn't want to stay for two nights and managed to arrange this through Booking.com. The staff were sympathetic but seemed genuinely surprised that we wanted to leave early. If only some more thought had gone into choosing chairs that not only looked nice but were comfortable and if only the chef was more considerate of vegetarians we would have had a memorable stay. Instead we left feeling very disappointed that our plans for a touch of luxury had gone awry.

We stayed here for 6 nights in our recent visit to Spain. Overall, we agree with our fellow travelers that this is no doubt a very nice hotel. We stayed on the first floor; the room is really spacious and clean. Being situated in a village, it is relatively quiet for a good sleep. It will be great if there is a little spa or pool. Staff are overall friendly. Breakfast is overall great. Dinner is not bad. The hotel is reasonably priced but dinner is on the expensive side for the moderate quality of food e.g all starters are priced at Euro18. Also, the restaurant is not opened everyday. The nearest good restaurant is about 11km away in a dark, narrow and winding road down the hill to Tolosa. In summary, the hotel will be good if the restaurant is improved and the hotel will be perfect if both the restaurant is improved and a little spa/pool is added.

Room Tip: Superior room is very much spacious and the one on the right of the building have better view.

Great place. You feel very welcome. Food is exquisite!!!! Rooms are great and have a high quality. Extremely good value for money in a wonderful ambiance. We were with a group of 5 Lotus cars and made tours with this hotel as our base. We had dinner every evening there and we were amazed about the food. The chef is a very nice man and he really tries very hard. If you like really good food than this place is the one to be.

We stayed in Iriart Jauregia while traveling through the Basque countryside in the summer of 2012. This hotel is absolutely fantastic. It is located near the top of a hill at a tiny, lovely village. The rural landscape is breathtaking and the hotel’s location is very tranquil and romantic. Cows mooing and birds singing wake you up in the morning, while the clouds softly engulf the hilltop.

The medieval building is also amazing, as was our room. Our room was very comfortable and included a large window with lovely views to the hilltop. Beams ran along the roof. A charming window was located over the bath in our bathroom, also providing fantastic views. One tiny drawback is that the bathroom door is made of glass, which means some lack of privacy or soundproofing. However, the bathroom is lovely and the glass door does give you the impression of extra space in the room. It is also worth noting that the hotel is spotless, the overall service is superb and the staff is very friendly, fluent in English and willing to provide you with useful advice about excursions in the Basque region. Breakfast was also great and we were served the best cappuccino I ‘ve ever had. We also had dinner one evening, which is definitely worth the try.

On the flipside, you do need a car to get there and it may prove a bit hard to find the hotel; we got lost on a couple of occasions on our way there, but we did not have a navigator. Also, the hotel is located about 45 minutes from San Sebastian, which we found not that close, especially during a night out. That said, the roads are well paved and the breathtaking scenery is definitely worth the visit! Having a car and wanting to visit San Sebastian this hotel was the best choice for us. On first chance I can’t wait to go back and stay there again (I wouldn’t bother staying at a hotel at the centre of San Sebastian). All in all, I cannot recommend strongly enough Iriarte Jauregia!!

Room Tip: We loved our room located at the upper floor, including a very large window with views to the lovely...

Arrived at the hotel yesterday as part of a long week end in the Basque Country...the stay has been amazing...when I drove around the area I was initially worried since there was only countryside around but the hotel experience was fantastic, lovely very spacious room with rustic decor and a touch of luxury. The must try is the restaurant, an experience We will never forget... A 6 course meal covering the best the region can offer, presented and served with passion and care...Delicious!

If you're after peace and quiet in a converted 16th century palace, with gastronomic food at every turn, this place is for you. The hotel is kind of in the middle of nowhere, with beautiful views across the hills. Although very rural, it's only 25-30 mins from San Sebastian, so it's actually very accessible. It exceeded our expectations, and we're already planning a return in the summer. Four key things going for it. The building itself is gorgeous, and has been really nicely restored. The rooms are lovely, and of a really nice standard. The place is so peaceful. The rooms are silent, and all you will hear through the open windows is the odd barking of a dog, or cow. It's almost monastic in it's quiet, and we chose to chill out and not leave the hotel for two days. The food in Bailara restaurant is amazing, and reason enough to stay at the hotel. Some of the best meat I have ever had, and huge enthusiasm on the part of head chef Enrique Fleischmann - he came out and personally explained nearly every course we ate, and everything was wonderful, including all the bonus courses they brought out. Serious Michelin-starred food each time we ate there, although a favourite of mine was the rare fillet steak, blackened with squid ink to an almost silver quality. Service was also excellent, with real friendliness and flair from the head waiter. In short, we loved it. If you want to be in a bustling place, and need loads of amenities, maybe not for you, but it's perfect for a relaxing stay where good food is important. I can't think of anything bad to say about the place. We will definitely be back, and if you're looking for a place near San Sebastian, it's a great find.
