Too much choice - all out of microwavable bags no doubt.. unimaginative combinations, salads.. The seating is all about cramming the visitors in not about a welcoming experience. have a look at the Heron's Nest just down the road.. lovely log fires in the winter.. much nicer choice of foods and the chips there look and taste so much nicer... Come on Black Boy.. you have a lovely position - sort the interior out - put some passion into your table plans, decor and food and you are surely onto a winner. We don't want loads of choice - just two or three fresh, honest home cooked meals... a hearty vegetable based soup with crusty bread and proper butter.. a veggie option and a couple of fish options and you will be turning the crowds away.

Wonderful food - huge helpings and really good value. Good for lunch after a walk along the canal but not dog-friendly in the cold and wet.

Called into the Black Boy after an absence of a couple of months and noticed how quiet it was. I used to go regularly at lunchtimes with old work colleages and it is sometimes hard to find a table, particularly in the summer. The standard and quality of the meal was still incredibly good although I have to say I have never seen so much salad on the plate with my ploughman's lunch. Must have been a whole lettuce to myself. My colleagues' meals were also good quality and we have now booked our Christmas lunch there.

Called in on a Sunday evening. It was very chilly in there....with a distinct lack of atmosphere. My husband opted for the Sunday roast. Whilst it looked to be a generouis portion, he said the meat was bland, the roast potatoes were soggy, the gravy watery and the stuffing like a bullet!! On the other hand, I went for the steak and ale pie, which came with a huge portion of chips and a meagre spoonful of anaemic peas! Can't fault the pie though....it was very tasty, with succulent chunks of very tender steak and a tasty gravy. All in all a bit of a disappointment, not helped by the wall to wall warbling of Elvis Presleys greatest hits. Oh...and throw in a screaming kid at the next table for good measure!! Thanks, but no thanks!
