Having not driven in France before we landed in Mantes tired, hungry and in need of a place to stay. We were not keen on driving any more than we had to so we pulled up outside hotel de val de seine and we must be honest, the initial eyeball of the outside did not entirely endear us to the place. We are very happy to tell you once inside, having met the receptionist (maybe owner) all our fears melted away. The place was spotless, the receptionist was extremely helpful, booking in was easy and quick. I asked for a window we could open as that was important to us and we are happy to tell you, not only did the window open, but it looked out on a green field. The room is economical in size, but has everything you need for an overnight or few days stay. Breakfast was perfect, and unusual for France, delicious scrambled egg was available, buffet style. We were very pleased that our initial hesitation was ill founded. Also there was parking right outside the hotel, and it was extremely quiet which meant a good nights sleep.

Room Tip: Ours was on first floor overlooking field and not the carpark

As we drove in to the car park, our hearts sank; the hotel looked like it had stepped out of the 1960's, with its old-fashioned logos and signage. It wasn't helped by being next door to a poor relation of a KFC takeaway.

The guy at the front desk was really friendly (the only reason we decided to continue with the booking) and spoke good English. Our room was cramped but clean and the bathroom was acceptable. There had been an attempt at updating the decor but it looked very odd (a purple and grey scheme).

We went into the town to get a meal and astonishingly could not find a restaurant. Some brasseries only served food on Fridays and Saturdays and one pizzeria we found didn't open until 7pm. Mantes la Jolie is not a good place to be hungry. We eventually went to McDonald's.

Overall, not a pleasant experience and we won't be repeating it.
