“Proper country pub”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 13, 2013

Proper country pub, well off the beaten track - but benefiting from its location near Minsmere.

We stopped off for lunch during an excellent walk from Dunwich and weren't disappointed. Four Adnams ales were on handpump, the ploughmans was first rate, and we also enjoyed a bowl of delicious olives - good value at £1.95.

The barman was on his own, so service was slow while he headed off to the kitchen for several minutes before taking our order.

Located in the tiny village East Bridge, this pub is warm and friendly. The rooms are spacious and clean, breakfast is an expanded version of the traditional English, and the dinner menu contains interesting items.
It is within walking distance to Minsmere RSPB reserve and very close to other footpaths in Suffolk.

We arrived here for lunch after a longer than expected, though lovely walk from Dunwich. After an incredibly fresh and very reasonably priced crab salad, some of us still couldn't face the walk back, so the the landlord, Julian, drove us back in his van! He even stopped on the way to point out deer in a field. You can hire bikes at the pub and if you only want to cycle them one way, he will pick you up or collect the bikes for you. I definitely want to try that as it's a great cycling area.

We ate here twice on a recent trip to Suffolk having previously visited during a very cold Easter break and we weren't disappointed this is a good honest friendly pub with a lovely welcoming atmosphere for families and dogs. Service can be a little slow when it's busy but would highly recommend the chilli it's got a hearty kick to it. Big portions great value and relaxed atmosphere.

So pleased we found the Eels Foot , hidden away in a tiny Suffolk village, but just a short drive from Southwold and Aldburgh and a mile and a half's walk to the beautiful coast.

This may just be the perfect pub, the interior is rustic and really cosy with stone floors, cushioned benches, wood fires and a library of books and games (and free wifi) It also has a huge garden with plenty of seating and a play area for children.

We stayed for three nights and during our stay ate breakfast, lunch and dinner there. Lovely, home-cooked food on each occasion. It is not a pub for those in a hurry and on a sunny day the place can be packed but the staff are always friendly and smiling even when rushed off their feet.

The rooms are in a separate block at the back of the pub so you have your own front door and don't have to go through the pub all the time. Our first floor room was spacious, really tastefully decorated, just like the pub itself, and with a huge comfortable bed and a lovely view out across the fields. The only reason this is not a five star review is that I think that for the price we paid the room was lacking a few home comforts : the towels were a bit thin and fraying, the pillows very flat and it was disappointing not to have proper coffee and decent tea in the room, just the usual nescafe sachets and pg tips teabags.

All in all we had a lovely stay and will definitely return to the pub if we are ever in the area again.

Room Tip: All the rooms seem to be the same, good size but they don't all have the same view. Room 6 on th...

simple pub grub, done well in a great setting with decent beer. Excellent service, a good atmosphere and a decent choice of food at a reasonable price.

Impossible to argue with that - highly recommended as a destination country pub.

After spending the day in Southwold we arrived at The Eel’s Foot Inn to a very friendly welcome, live afternoon music and bbq in a beautiful setting with a climbing frame and trampoline in the garden to amuse the kids. Our room was exactly as we had hoped clean, spacious and very comfortable for our family of four. They had put a cot in the room for our 1 year old rather than a travel cot which was so much more comfortable and made all the difference. The food in the evening was spot on and the breakfast in the morning cooked by the landlord was one of the best we have tasted at a b&b in a long while. Would definitely recommend to families. Hope to be back soon.
