Description: Hotel Endsleigh dining room is a superbly stylish, historic spot on the edge of Dartmoor with unmatched views, the sister hotel of the superhot Tresanton in Cornwall. Hip designer Olga Polizzi has winningly brought the historic Grade I shooting and fishing lodge into the 21st century while honouring its Regency soul and it is run by her perfectionist daughter Alex Polizzi. The elegant wood-panelled dining room with the Duke of Bedford and friends family crests looks out onto the Humphrey Repton garden. Chef Christopher Dyke uses local and regional produce to devise his English menu complemented by a thoughtful international wine list. This is country house cool.

I have eaten at Hotel Endsleigh many times over the years, and after a lovely anniversary lunch recently decided it was about time I put finger to keyboard to let anyone who reads this know what a truly special place this is.

The approach to the hotel is in itself an experience - a long, winding drive fringed with rhododendrons, a riot of colour in season, leads you through established grounds. Occasionally, pheasants appear, dashing in front of the car with no warning and gaps in the dense cover of foliage allow you tantalising glimpses of the RIver Tamar in the distance. The drive is narrow so encountering a vehicle coming in the other direction can be a little bit worrying, this rarely happens though and when it does, a bit of careful manoeuvring allows you to pass with ease.

There is plenty of parking space when you finally reach the hotel and often you'll find a member of staff waiting to greet you as you enter the hall. Here wooden floors, a log fire (even in August!) and earthy coloured fabrics give a warm and welcoming first impression.

The wood panelled dining-room looks out onto the glorious gardens bursting with colour and health and a well tended lawn allows staying guests to have a game of croquet. If you're lucky with the weather you can eat outside on the terrace, there's a stone alcove providing useful shelter from any irritating breezes, request lunch here for a treat and a bit more privacy.

Inside, the dining-room isn't particularly large so has a nice intimate feel to it. Lunch was £28 for three courses including hors d'oeuvre, extremely good value considering the quality of the food and the whole experience. Service is slick, professional and the staff friendly. The food, imaginative without being pretentious, a treat for the taste buds and always beautifully presented. Coffee and petit fours in the lounge can follow if you wish, I would recommend it. A lovely room, tastefully decorated with comfortable furniture and again more of those stunning views. Sit back and relax.

If you haven't been before and are considering it, GO. You will fall in love with this wonderful place and want to return again and again.

Came here with my girlfriend and loved it. Couldn't think of a better setting for an 'al fresco' lunch as its surrounded by beautiful gardens and overlooking a picturesque part of the river Tamar. Service was good and the food was the best I have had in a while in terms of eating out!!

loved the food at this restaurant. Would like more safe options for the more fussy eater (myself) but the service is perfect and the portions were plentiful. Would highly recommend

Went here to look at using Endsleigh as our wedding venue. Glad we made a visit rather than assuming it would be as good as Tresanton, which it certainly isn't. I can only assume that this place trades off the back of being the sister hotel to tresanton but I think this is commercial suicide for tresanton as these two hotels couldn't be more different. The only similarity between the sister hotels is their stunning locations, here the similarity ends!!! Given that Alex Polizzi has made a career from advising other establishments on how to improve their business one would assume that all was in order in her own establishment...? However, this is clearly not the case and I suggest Alex Polizzi spends sometime in her own hotel putting her own house in order. Food is very very poor for a hotel of this perceived standard and pricing. The chef really does need to go back to basics as I'm not sure his palate is up to the job and he seems obsessed with putting some sort of fruit with every dish he serves! Most dishes just don't work and his seasoning is way off the mark, it isn't even that his seasoning is consistent as dishes were both under and over seasoned and we had a much better meal in the local pub on the Friday night for a third of the price. If you look on here you will see that criticisms of the food are consistent and long standing yet nothing has been done about this which shows the contempt the place has for their guests. When we raised concerns with the manager of the establishment no apology was forthcoming nor was there any element of surprise! It really is a shame as the place has so much potential but it is unfortunately a case of style over substance? Alex Polizzi was quoted as saying that Hotel Endsleigh was her "unloved child" at the moment, well Alex all I can say is that this shows!

We're dog owners and really enjoy finding new walks that keep the dogs amused and combine a treat for us!

Hotel Endsleigh is an exceptional hotel set in what must be one of England's (certainly Devon), best locations. Overlooking the River Tamar set in over 100 acres of beautiful gardens created by Sir Humphry Repton, we never tire of this wonderful gem. Having walked around the grounds and along the banks of the Tamar, we enjoyed a beautiful High Tea (£17.50 each which, when you consider the quantity and quality of what some other hotels around Dartmoor offer, this is fantastic value) with wonderful organic tea, sandwiches and a "help yourself' buffet of cakes and scones" which is limitless! The staff are exceptionally professional, polite and nothing is too much trouble.

The hotel is dog friendly and ours were given their own bowl of fresh water too - a lovely touch. The walk around the grounds can take up to an hour and a half and the magnificent plants and trees along with streams appearing from nowhere, are stunning. Don't miss the Shell House; a highly unusual little house internally decorated with sea shells to all the walls from around the world, along with a wishing well. The hotel itself is a former hunting lodge and retains wonderful period features adorned with beautiful decoration and furnishings.

We plan to stay in September for a short break but in the meantime, we hope to be regular visitors!
