“The best bath ever!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2008

As soon as you arrive at this B&B you feel at home. A huge pot of tea and homemade biscuits are waiting in the cosy sitting room overlooking the woodland valley leading to Lee Bay. The rooms are light and airy and prettily furnished with a lovely mix of antique and contemporary furnishings and are en suite, but you can also use the main bathroom with its 6ft long roll top bath. This is the most relaxing bath I've had! Lots of hot water, plenty of towels, candles, and a choice of magazines, fantastic! Topped off with one of Julia's delicious evening meals which more than catered for my vegetarian needs. Grey Cottage is well placed for exploring the village of Lee Bay and the coastal paths and accessible by public transport (I took the National Express to Ilfracombe and the local bus dropped me at the top of the drive). Julia is a generous and welcoming host and her professional catering experience shows in the breakfast (lots of choice) and dinner and yummy snacks in between. The only trouble is making room for a cream tea in the local pub!

We were looking for somewhere nice on the Devon coast for a weekend break. I booked Grey Cottage because it looked like a lovely house in an area close to the coast but not in a busy resort, as indeed it turned out to be. The cottage is run by Julia, a delightful, lady who makes you feel very welcome. We were offered tea and delicious homemade shortbread and tea-bread on arrival, which was much appreciated after the journey.
The rooms are charming with a mix of furniture and furnishings which all come together to make it very comfortable and relaxing. Breakfast is served in the conservatory at the side of the cottage. I have never before seen quite so much choice of cereals and fruit to begin breakfast with, followed by a delicious full english, the eggs for which come from the hens you can see pecking around the garden. We also had large jugs of orange juice and milk - no stingy portions here! For people that don't like a full english breakfast, there are a wide range of alternative breakfasts on offer, from kippers to kedgeree. On one evening we took advantage of the evening meal option and had a wonderful three course meal, again with generous portions.
If you are looking for a place to stay where you can chill out and relax in lovely surroundings and have lovely food, but still be near to the sea and holiday resorts of north Devon then I would recommend this place unreservedly.

This place is good for the soul. Set in the valley leading to the quiet seaside village of Lee on the stunning North Devon Coast, you will be welcomed by the proprietor Julia. She was a professional chef in London before moving to set up this inviting and homely B&B. The rooms are small but elegantly furnished with a welcome tray in every room. You will be back. Perfect in summer and great in winter with the open fire in the living room. Sit back and enjoy.

My young son and I have stayed at many B&Bs across the UK, but Grey Cottage has just become our favourite! Julia, the owner, is a warm, welcoming and generous host, and a marvellous cook. Definitely the ideal B&B for food-lovers! Our room was charming, and the view across the wooded valley to the fields beyond was stunning. Lee village, with its rocky beach (there is sand at low tide) is a short (although rather steep!) walk away. Woolacombe beach and Ilfracombe are both within easy reach, and Grey Cottage is a wonderfully peaceful retreat at the end of each day, away from the tourist traps. We can't wait to go back!
