“Not particularly good”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 3, 2012

I can only speak of the restaurant, but this is not anything special.

The food is exactly as described on the menu, and is not expensive, but it is also lacking in imagination. Presentation of the dishes in particular is poor - for instance the salad starter has all the ingredients, cheese, ham, lettuce, etc, but just put on a plate with no thought of "eye appeal".

Certainly you should not think of this restaurant as an example of the old-style French country gems.

Location is fine; on the main street and overlooking the river in Axat.

There is a good selection of reasonably priced wine, and the owner and staff are very pleasant.

“Wonderful place to eat!”

We visited this restaurant during our stay in Axat, we had the 3 course menu and a carafe of wine, all the food is sourced locally and was home made, we would definitely visit this restaurant again.

“try it as soon as you can!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2010

What a fabulous find, just amazed we haven't found it on previous visits, but it is plain outside on the main road in Axat and doesn't look that enticing, but how appearances can be deceptive! We sat at the back overlooking the river, with the window open watching the birds and listening to the river - who needs more than that. We had .the fabulous menu du jour including home made terrine and a great pork and sausage with lentils main course (sounds simple but it was delicious) and home made fig tart and egg custard and homemade icecream, yes 3 desserts but we were on holiday and with wine it only came to 35 euro. Absolutely fabulous, the cooking is great and the host helped with his English and my limited French but wouldn't let on all the secrets of the home cooking - but they want to sell up, so get in there while you can.

“5 star flavours at 2 star prices!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 8, 2009

If anybody has been saying recently 'that French restaurants are not like they used to be', this is a place to try. Very simple but exceptional quality food served in a clean easy manner. We were boweled over by the quality. Almost everything is made in house. The lady (Angelina) cooks and Jean-Michelle serves. Jean-Michell also assists in making all the home made terrines etc and they are fantastic! Also very good is Angelina's Fricasse d'Ax which is the speciality of the restaurant. Its a pork dish served with bacon, mushrooms, olives etc and is very fine. Also fab is the French onion soup served as it should be with crusty bread and melting cheese. There are several very good home made deserts. Overall I cannot fault the quality and especially the prices which are very low. The restaurant looks very unassuming from outside but this really is one to detour to. Don't expect little bits of parsley sticking out of everything. The aim here is to provide very good value food in generous portions which wiull be remembered for their flavour. There are menus in English and Jean-Michelle also speaks a little English if your French is not great. Its a real tribute to all that is great in French cuisine. Quality, value and the abilty be remembered for a very long time. 5 star flavours at 2 star prices!
