Great little French village. Be sure to take a drive through the Pyrenees on your way out! We drove from Axat to Andorra on the way out and it was spectactular. The views were breathtaking. The road from Axat to Ax les Thermes through the mountains is winding & narrow but all in all not too bad. Don't try in the winter tho. We drove it Mid-October so it wasn't bad at all. If you decide to stay in Axat overnight there is a great little B & B called Chambers d hotes right in the village. It's run by a Brit named Paul Bridgestock and his lovely wife Val . They were excellent hosts and most knowledgeable of the area. They only have three rooms available so you might check with them ahead of time before you leave for Axat. Paul & Val will make you feel like your right at home and will even let you play with their dog,Cartoush, and the two cats they have.

To our relief, we stumbled upon the Aux Qautre Saisons in Axat, France in the foothills of the Pyrenees. The English owners of this chambres d'hotes are Val and Paul. They really welcomed us when we showed up without reservations. Val showed us to our room and we looked at each other and smiled. They had a regional apertif waiting in the room for us. Everything was pin-neat clean. The rooms were all nicely decorated and had great furnishings. All rooms are large, much larger than the typical European hotel room. The bathrooms were exceptionally clean and were also large. All this for 40 euros a night for two people at the time of this review, including breakfast.

We realized that this spot was a great place to be based from for a few days so that we could cycle throughout this portion of the Pyrenees. We quickly stretched our stay from one night to three. Axat is a great location to bike ride through the high mountains or the foothills to see the Cathar castles.

Val and Paul are great hosts, making our stay very enjoyable. They did anything they could to make us very comfortable. They offered their main living room to us to relax in and the large garden areas have plenty of places to enjoy the great views of the mountain sides and limestone cliffs across the valley. Breakfast was plentiful, giving us enough energy to go on our bike rides through the Pyrenees.

Axat has an charming country restaurant in town and serves wholesome regional dishes. We returned there twice and ate the duck dishes. Quillan, a larger town, is just down the road 10 minutes by car for more good restaurants and additional stores. Axat also has a good little grocery store, bakery, and butcher where we found all that we needed.

We plan to go back again next year some time to ride all the roads that we couldn't get to. The Aux Quatre Saisons is a great place for at least 3 nights and up to a week to explore the Pyrenees and the Cathar castles, either by car or bicycle. Compared to other Chambres d'hotes, this one is one of the best.
