We waited for ages only to get the nastiest waitress I have ever had in a restaurant. She had such an attitude and this very nasty way of handling us- plus completely slow and of course never checked in with us if we wanted anything else. Wine was excellent- meal choices were limited to only game meats- e.g. wild boar, etc. We had snacks instead as a result- Speckteller (which was very good) and Geselchetes (which was ok, needed mustard, but of course , no chance to order it). I am really annoyed that I gave a tip to these people and I should have mentioned that this amazingly poor way of dealing with guests is unacceptable.

Dear Chloe C,

thank you for your visit and taking time rating our wein.kost.bar.

We're very sorry you've left our place unsatisfied like this.
We always try our best, at the moment a 15 year old student is working at our place and she just started. So please be so kind to give young people some chance to explore and learn. And we know this will be a long way. But we will give her and young people a chance to learn.

About our food choices, also the game dishes are cold snacks. We don't serve hot meals.
In Austria tipping is your choice, if you are not satisfied you are not forced to do it.

I also have to mention, talking about a young girl, she is nasty....isn't really nice. Maybe you will think about it for your next rating.

Thank you

Eurohike (reviewed elsewhere) gave us a voucher for a wine-tasting at this delightful "weingut" (vineyard and winery), which we might not have found otherwise. A young woman on the staff served us tastes (three or four good sips, enough to savor, not enough to inebriate!) of three distinctive Lagler wines, with a jug of spring water and some bread and cheese to clear the palate, along with intelligent and informative descriptions of the differences among the three and enough time to enjoy the learning. The place is relaxed, friendly and cheerful, with wine and other local delicacies including the famous local apricot liqueurs and preserves for sale. It seemed that lots of Austrians come there to buy the delicate and delicious wines by the case. Wish we could have! Worth a detour as the classic Baedecker guidebooks used to say.

We stopped here with our guide for lunch. We were blessed with a beautiful fall day and sat outside with great views. We were served an excellent Gruner Vetliner and good Reisling with the best fresh breads I've ever tasted and an excellent variety of meats and local delicacies. Highly recommended.

We were lucky to meet Mr. Lager in person who helped us to taste really special wines, he made a total change to the visit, since we started with some mediocre riesling and a glass of red. The place has modern desingn, so it is very different from the local "heuringen" family places. It is possible to buy wines by boxes after the tasting.

Lagler's is worth the walk up from town. It is a lovely, casual little wine bar with an outdoor terrace with views of the Wachau Valley. My husband found this online before we left, and drew up a map so we could find it. From town, walk west away from the river until you reach the WW1 & 2 memorial (and reflect for a moment on the the repetition of the family names on the memorial). From there, head up into the cobblestoned little "downtown" with the church and keep going up to the left, then to the right, and up through and past the gate....when you get to the "t", turn left and voila! The people are friendly (although at times hard to find) and very happy to offer you their wines by the glass or by the bottle (you can purchase to take home to the hotel which we did). There is a small terrace on which you can enjoy the wine; we tried two types of Gruner Veltliner, the most popular fresh & somewhat fruity white in Austira.
