Owner description: Point Bonita today is part of the largest urban national park in the United States, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. A secret jewel of the Bay Area, Point Bonita is still an active lighthouse. The U.S. Coast Guard maintains the lighthouse and the National Park Service provides access to visitors. Point Bonita Lighthouse is reached by a half mile trail that is very steep in parts. Discover Point Bonita's wild landscape, geology and fascinating history. The tunnel halfway to the lighthouse is open only during visiting hours: Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Spend an afternoon taking an adventure to Point Bonita. A scenic drive to get there, then a half to 3/4 mile hike out to the lighthouse past rugged rocky coastline with waves crashing. We saw sea lions on the rocks below.
The journey is worthy of the destination

Beautiful walk to lighthouse and surrounding firing positions. Also went to nearby Rodeo Beach. Great beach and trails that lead off into the hills.

Thank you to the late Huell Howser of California's Gold for introducing this lighthouse tucked away in the Marin Headlands area. To access the lighthouse you walk down a steep trail and pass through a tunnel before crossing a pedestrian bridge to the lighthouse. Sweeping views of the Golden Gate, as well as excellent views of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Bring a jacket and long pants, as it is of course quite windy in this area. The walk back up the trail took some time since it was a bit steep in some areas, but not impossible to do.

This is a excellent spot from where you see Golden gate and San Fransisco from the sea. On the beach ypu will see many seals, hence check opening hours before you go, if closed you will not be able to go thru the ladt tunnel and last bridge, there is a small parking just were the small path starts if that is full use the bigger one situated 400 meters before

This is a hidden gem which is definitely worth the hike from the road. There are outstanding views as you walk out to the lighthouse. The lighthouse itself has a small display area. The park rangers are very helpful and have lots of information to share. Be aware it is manned by volunteer rangers so the hours are very limited. Check out the hours in advance: http://www.nps.gov/goga/pobo.htm The road to/from the area is great as well.
