“The local spot for a tasty and hearty Italian meal!”
Reviewed September 15, 2013

When it comes to dining, the South Lake Tahoe area has no shortage of burger bars and pizza joints; there are the buffets in the casinos on the Stateline, NV side, the familiar chains like Denny’s, IHOP and Applebee’s, and there are several high-end restaurants near the ski resorts as well. Scusa stands out because it is none of those – it’s a nice local Italian restaurant with good food that won’t break your wallet.

Scusa is a true dinner house; they are not open for lunch, and there is no bar filled with Happy Hour revelers, just a spacious, well-appointed dining room. They do offer a representative selection of beers and wine, but no mixed drinks or hard liquor.

My wife and I began our meal with their delicious focaccia bread, which is complimentary. We shared a unique and tasty Eggplant Stack appetizer, which is goat cheese stacked between breaded eggplant and bruschetta. From their varied menu, I selected linguini and clams, while my wife opted for their special for the day, which was linguini marinara with scallops. Both dinners were excellent and we left feeling very satisfied.

Scusa opens for dinner at 5:00 pm; they accept reservations, including those made online. It’s a great place to enjoy a good meal and not feel like a tourist.

“Delicious Italian in South Lake”
Reviewed September 8, 2013

We called and made reservations the day we went for a party of 5 and it was no problem at all, which was a pleasant surprise on a holiday weekend. We brought our own wine and they were happy to open it for a corking fee.

We ordered a couple of appetizers for the table. The lobster ravioli were extremely delicious, but a bit rich, I was glad we shared them. The sauce was just incredible, we dipped the yummy bread they served at the table into it as well. We also ordered Garlic bread scusa for the table, and the table devoured it.

For an entree, I ordered the veal Marsala and really enjoyed it. It was 2 nice size pieces of veal that were cooked perfectly and the marsala sauce was exactly as it should be as well. One of the people at the table got the salmon and I tried it and it was cooked perfectly and very tasty. Another person at the table ordered a special of the day which was also fish and was delicious when i tasted some.

There was a live horn player in the bar which created a really nice ambiance, although we sat very close to the music so there were a couple of times it was a little loud. There were white table cloths, but there a lot of folks dressed very casually, it was an anything goes kind of place. I would go back when in Tahoe next.

“First class”
Reviewed August 29, 2013 via mobile

Service and food was first class. We had travelled from New York, Arizona, California and Nevada on our road trip and this was by far the best meal and service. The waiter made amendments to the menu to accommodate our taste and the food itself was fantastic!

“Excusing Myself from Scusa's”
Reviewed August 28, 2013

We have had our last dinner at Scusa's. Our evening was a dud. I was left with half a plate of fat after picking my way through my Osso Buco, the waiter was impersonal and helpers tried twice to remove our plates before we were finished. We felt wine and food were overpriced for the value.

“An enjoyable meal”
Reviewed August 6, 2013

We made our reservation via Open Table and had no issues upon arrival. The service was very good and our waiter was particularly friendly and attentive. We were thanked multiple times for coming on our walk out.

As for the food: we all enjoyed our meals. Hubby got the linguine bolognese (something along those lines) and it was very good. Daughter got the spaghetti and meatballs and loved it. Son got the chicken parmesan and was not disappointed. I got the chicken picatta and really enjoyed it. They don't skimp on the servings. Oh! We also got appetizers of garlic bread (yum!) and baked mozzarella wrapped in pancetta (yum too and I don't usually like pancetta).

The spumoni was yummy, the cheesecake was good, and the chocolate brownie got sucked down.

We aren't super easy to please or super picky, but we aren't pushovers...we enjoyed our meal on the back patio and other than a yellow jacket that seemed to fancy us we were quite happy. I noted the nice Italian music and liked it. $175 for dinner and dessert with appetizers and a glass of wine with three nonalcoholic drinks. Not cheap, but we felt it was reasonable for what we were served.

If we weren't heading home tomorrow we would definitely go back.
