The fact that it is less well visited than the relatively nearby Tirta Empul gives Gunung Kwai temple a more relaxed, peaceful atmosphere.
The tickets are a very reasonable 30,000 Rupiah per tourist, which includes a standard issue sarong. Next to the ticket booth are steps down into the tranquil temple grounds. After walking through a grassy area, one reaches the walls of the temple, with natural springs on the left - incredibly clear water with large coy carp in abundance - before entering the gate of the main temple in the centre of the complex. We had a guide for the day which added to the interest of the visit as we were told about the background to the multitude of sculptures and shrines.
Having left the main area, we headed to a covered platform sitting over another large clear pool full of large fish. The tourists have the run of the place until 6pm, after which the locals gather to relax, talk and pray.
A good experience for the soul...
