“An Absolute Must!”
Reviewed December 6, 2013

Suffice to say that this is one of those places that will stay with you for a long time. The cottages right in the middle of the vineyard, where you're literally surrounded by the vines. The majestic surrounding peaks. The rustic and organic meets modernistic and industrial designs of the architecture. It's all so extremely beautiful and classy! An absolute must for that special occasion.

We stayed here during a trip to the Hawkes Bay and loved it. The secluded cottages are set in the quiet and picturesque vineyards, making it a wonderful place to relax and get away from it all. Craggy Range Winery also has a great restaurant and, of course, does wine tastings. Well worth a visit.

The winery is located in a quiet country setting, bordered by the "craggy range" of Te Mata peaks and the Tuki Tuki River. The accommodation, comprising stand-alone cottages, are situated well back from the road and nestle amongst the grape vines. Pukekos wander around the cottage.

Being a bit isolated you do require your own transport to travel to other Hawkes Bay places of interest.

Checking in is very relaxed and almost casual. A short drive through the vineyard then brings you to your cottage where you park immediately outside the front door.

The cottages are roomy with 2 bedrooms, each with their own en-suite. The king-sized beds are fresh, clean and very, very comfortable. The lounge/dining area is relatively spacious and comfortable and well equipped to satisfy the needs of travelers/holidaymakers.

The lounge and bedrooms are equipped with tvs. and heatpumps.

Self-service breakfast comprises a choice of muesli or cornflakes, stewed fruit (pears), fresh yoghurt, bread, butter and feijoa(?) jam. This was quite sufficient. The only inferior item was the toaster that took a long time to brown the bread and then with very uneven results.

The accommodation was clean and tidy and well serviced on a daily basis.

My wife and I dined at "Terroir" restaurant. We enjoyed a 5-course degustation menu complete with wines. I would rank the food and service as good but not excellent. The Craggy Range syrah was the pick of the wines so far as my tastes are concerned.

We also enjoyed a couple of hours wine tasting. This is provided as a free bonus to staying guests. In the main the wines were very palatable and the lady conducting the tasting was very informative on the Craggy Range products.

Our 3 day stay at Craggy Range was a birthday present to my wife from family. In consequence it is not possible to comment on value.

Room Tip: There are currently only 2 cottages but it is understood a further one, identical in layout, is to b...

Craggy Range provides the views, the cottage, and ambiance. You bring the rest.

These two 2 bedroom cottages are nestled in the Craggy Range vineyard. They are perfectly designed with everything you need---but nothing more. You can expect to look after yourself after the Cellar gates close and you have the vineyards to yourself. While you can walk to the on-site restaurant, we enjoyed lighting a fire and making something in the efficient kitchen, then strolling the vineyards in the starlight.

We enjoy interesting places to stay and this was one of our favorite places.

This was a superbly, well-appointed, spacious, spotlessly clean and comfortable chalet situated in the middle of the vineyard. We enjoyed our breakfast of muesli, fruit, yoghurt, fresh bread and jam. Thoroughly recommend as a luxury stay with very good wines. We were disappointed by the restaurant which produced a side of inedibly salted greens and were then less than gracious in exchanging them but this review is about the accommodation.

Room Tip: No need to be choosy! Choice limted and they're all good

As previous reviewers have stated, this is a great location and the cottages are beautifully appointed. Situated amongst the vines with views of Te Mata this should have been an exceptional ovenight stay. The staff were very friendly and the 'Terroir' restaurant was definitely worth a visit BUT..... unfortunately, two thing let it down:
Firstly, this is the only 'luxury' NZ accommodation in which we have stayed, that does not provide a welcoming complimentary bottle/half bottle of wine. Being a vineyard this is a bit ironic and rather short sited as a complimentary bottle of wine would have no doubt have encouraged us to purchase another bottle or two!
Secondly, the breakfast was truly appalling. It consisted of day old bread which was already in our room on arrival, one choice of cereal (muesli) and a pot of stewed fruit. There was no fruit juice, no yoghurt and no jam, honey or other preserves. Plain toast or stale bread and butter is not quite what we envisaged from any establishment such of this and rather spoilt an otherwise very pleasant stay.

Room Tip: Only two cottages - both excellent

Family of four (kids 5 and 8) stayed in the Cellar Master's cottage in April 2012 (this is one of the two cottages on site). We really liked the cottage - although the appearance is functional from the outside, it is spotlessly clean, fitted out to a very high standard with new fabrics and high quality furniture, and well laid out inside. Each bedroom is a good size and has its own huge wardrobe and private bathroom; there's a large entrance hall with a kind of laundry room/area behind some doors; and a pleasant kitchen / dining area with adequate cooking facilities (a hob, kettle and microwave, but no oven or dishwasher); and finally a sitting room with a stereo, satellite TV box, and a large and new flat screen TV and DVD player.

Overall the impression is that no expense has been spared in equipping this cottage for guests, and it was an extremely comfortable place to stay. If you want to do a lot of cooking you might miss an oven or dishwasher, but why would you want to stay here and not eat in the Terroir restaurant on site? (We did twice - excellent food - and they said they would deliver food to our cottage if we'd asked).

Finally the location is stunning, behind Te Mata peak and close to Havelock North and all the other wineries of the area. It's perfect for groups of adults or older families. The only advice I would have if travelling with small children (like we were) is to be aware that there isn't a huge amount of outside space to run around in near to the cottage (you don't want them playing in the vines!) and there isn't anything particularly for the kids to do there (ie no pool or playground equipment). Not a problem at all if you go out for the day and return at bedtime, but I wouldn't plan on staying around the cottage during the day if you have little ones in tow.
